Preview: PlayStation Home pg2
Up next was the Game Space, a sprawling rec hall with pool tables, a bowling alley, and arcade games tucked away in a side area. Flashing screens and bleep-bloop sound effects washed over us like a snake charmer's song, giving an amused Jack no choice but to show off the hole-in-the-wall throwback to the glory days of the 1980s. Original content will comprise arcade games in Home, though we can't help wondering if PSN demos might make their way into the cabinets eventually, which would make for a fun way to experience new software.
Jack and the Home crew anticipate that Game Spaces will become crowded, which will provide a din of merriment that will make many smile, yet cause agitation in those waiting in queues for their turn at pool tables or video games. The solution: to create instances when a space reaches its capacity. Players intent on meeting up with friends should coordinate meetings ahead of time via PSN messaging. For impromptu gatherings, players can send invites that will transport friends immediately to their current Game Space.
Tuckered out from our socializing, Jack again called forth his PSP navigation system and took us to his apartment. Jack's pad obviously isn't used too often: bare hardwood floor, three white sofas. Two windows were all that coated Jack's spars walls, though the large ovular skylight was impressive.
Stepping out onto his balcony, Jack gifted us with a view that he claimed was only possible on the PS3's hardware. The sea spread out before us like an undulating carpet of blue and green. Dozens of boats were tied to a dock that caressed the sea like a wooden finger. Seagulls frolicked along a sandy path bordered by rocks.
Would every apartment have such scenery? Perhaps, but even better views might be had by those who choose to purchase premium homes and apartments, which can be acquired at realtor stores located within Home's shopping mall, along with hundreds of other gadgets and knickknacks. Whether your default apartment or a private vista, all of your living spaces will be yours and yours alone. Other players will only be able to visit with an explicit invite from you, so if you have something private to discuss with a friend but don't want anyone overhearing your words, simply invite them back to your place to conduct the discussion.
Conceding that his apartment was indeed a colossal bore, Jack opened his virtual guide and showed us a plethora of shopping options: wallpaper, tables, chairs, accessories... all of those and more are available in both free and purchasable variations, and can be used to decorate one's apartment exactly to one's liking via color schemes, exact placement, and other customization options. A haphazard stack of benches shoved against one wall was, according to Jack, his attempt to build a set of bleachers, which he claimed one beta tester had done to great success.
Unleashing your inner home decorating beast and playing a rousing game of bowling is fun, sure, but what about the real games? Enter the game launcher, a tool that allows one boot up a game directly from within Home. Using the copy of Warhawk currently residing in his PS3 as an example, Jack invoked the launcher and, without launching the game, tweaked all available Warhawk options.
Post-customization, Jack selected Create, which prompted a bubble advertising his desire to play Warhawk to appear above his head. Any interested players can simply walk up to Jack, press X, take a gander at his configuration, and press another button when they're ready to play. Once Jack has assembled a party to his liking, he can launch the game, play, and then return Home.
Our last stop was a tavern decorated in a jungle theme. Sunlight seeped from cracks in the wooden walls. A bar lined with red-cushioned stools occupied a far corner, and a jukebox hummed quietly in the back of the room. Where were we? Looking around revealed a poster of Drake, titular protagonist of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, hanging over the bar. This, Jack said, was a custom game space, which could potentially exist for every available PS3 game. Custom game spaces exist for people interested in a particular game to meet, hang out, discuss the game, and explore secrets, such as three doors in the tavern that couldn't be opened without special codes.
Even more than providing a virtual social area with pool, bowling, and apartments, Jack closed our meeting by asserting Home's primary function: to extend a game beyond the edge of its optical disc. Will the development team be successful in this ambitious goal? We'll find out when the free-of-charge PlayStation Home releases in the fourth quarter of 2008.

devdevi85 @ Sep 17th 2008 5:55PM
How about when it's ready?....so people like you who don't like reading about it and just want it and expect all this stuff without reading about it will not be so let down if they were to release it when it's not ready......
which will hopefully be when they release it this Fall/Winter '08....

twice?
I think you'll find I couldn't give a rats arse anymore about this white elephant

I'm losing interest in PlayStation Home. If it never comes out, why should I care about it? Ever since it was announced at GDC, I've been going nuts over it, but now, I don't even care anymore until a solid date is announced.
Woz @ Sep 17th 2008 5:42PM
I lost interest about three weeks ago myself. Reading the forum will drive any sane person crazy.
GeekWarriorGamer @ Sep 17th 2008 5:27PM
I am a Home beta tester and frankly it's a disaster waiting to happen. The over-riding feeling I get is that Sony haven't a clue what to use it for yet. Even after years of development (let's not forget this kicked of when PS2 was still top of the heap) and goodness knows how much money this still feels like a pointless exercise in proving that 20 people can dance round a bubble machine.
Like many of PSNs shortcomings there are some glaring design flaws. For example, if you go to your local amusement arcade and all of the pool tables are busy, well, fair enough. But for the same thing to happen in a virtual arcade? Graphically it's pretty poor: imagine a budget Trueman Show and you are close.
Sony would be better trying to get some of the functionality that XBL boasts rather than wasting time and money on this. My ears are still ringing from all the screams and whistles of the coms in the Resistance 2 beta. Try and get the basics right first Sony.
Extinction @ Sep 17th 2008 10:08PM
home gives us the last feature live has that psn doesnt
mixelmagic @ Sep 18th 2008 4:55PM
They can work on more than one issue at a time, they're just about to release an official headset..
My experiences with the home beta have been great. Interesting to see the differences between the current beta build and the one PS3fanboy were shown, various things have obviously been improved already.
Gambit07 @ Sep 17th 2008 5:28PM
Good read, finally I'll make some PSN friends(and foes).

Jeez... Stop complaining. Just be thankful you're getting something for free. You don't have to use it if you hate it that much. I'm sure there are loads of people wishing they were in the beta.
Der-Held @ Sep 17th 2008 9:43PM
@ Geekwarrior, dude you are NOT a Home tester but a 360 troll. Its easy to tell since you clearly complain about every little thing PS3 has to offer and yet praise XBL. When Home comes out XBL WILL be finished and M$ knows it.
diablo_123412 @ Sep 17th 2008 5:33PM
Really nice preview indeed. Home cannot come soon enough!
MikeDawg @ Sep 18th 2008 2:48PM
well, i am a tester and he is right.
He also did not mention that Sony pulled the plug on viewing pics and listening to music that's saved in the HDD.
That was PS Homes biggest draw and now its gone.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 17th 2008 5:34PM
I love that... "free-of-charge"
Cant wait to design my Home and show off my (few) trophies and actually see the icon on my PS3s XMB ^_^
benny boy @ Sep 17th 2008 5:44PM
It really will be amazing. I'm in the beta now and it is soo much better than I thought it would be. I assumed it would be a boring sterile environment. But it's actually really easy just to go around and dance, talk, play pool or go bowling with someone...
Nobody should be complaining about Home as it is a free service provided by Sony for FREE. Also, those saying that they're now no longer interested in it because it hasn't come out yet really need to grow up. I mean, you haven't even tried it yet. No-one actually knows what other unknown features it will have at release and how it could develop into something fantastic.
Jerses @ Sep 17th 2008 6:23PM
i thing GeekWarriorGamer disagree with you lol.
My only problem with home is the time (equal money loss to sony). If they took 3 year in the making for this social network (google it..its 3 years old) and they have come only with a beta... how much time will they take to improve they whole experience, the so promised virtual rooms with user created content. Im not asking it now ( only the open beta lol) but they should make it clear what will and not will home be.
Home will be free to play...but you will have to pay for items.. and im guessing you will be charged to enter a room with games or arcades, or if you dont want to wait in line for the arcades so you can play them...you can buy them as a furniture but it will cost like.. 2.99. So im guessing the fun part of home will cost (and its ok, nothing is for free in this life)...yeah talking to people is boring lol
Phantom @ Sep 17th 2008 8:57PM
Actually I think everything will be free , but home will be filled with advertising , like billboards , real cars , products with real company labels (coke , holister , etc), and the furniture will be real , but the thing you buy it from will be a real store or whatever .
deusmecha @ Sep 17th 2008 5:48PM
Very well written article.
But I REALLY don't want to see another goddamn thing about Home until it's out.

JerJerBinks @ Sep 17th 2008 6:00PM
Prediction: time spent in Home by me < 1 hour.
They could have used these resources on new games, software BC, or god only knows what ... maybe a JRPG by Japan Studio! Sigh.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 17th 2008 6:19PM
They are making this in a UK studio... I forget which one but... yeah, Japan Studio aren't touching Home...
E @ Sep 17th 2008 6:11PM
i cant beleive you guys are eating this s__t up over n over again dont tell meeh what you can do there thats all i hear blah blah blah you can do this and its made for this and more blah blah blah!!! Let me find out stop telling meeh what you can do im tired of it, people been hearing that since 07. you ask for a date and they just spit out stories like the one you just read over n over again give meeh a break!! geekwarriorgamer had it right Sony first get the basics right then move on the box has you beet still on the online service step it up!!! i dont own the box but my brothers do and this ish is right they got it going on with the features sony is just not there yet instead their working on this money/time pit that no one sees and has all these features y dont you ask some hard hitting questions like "when is coming out?", "whats the hold up?", "are you guys expecting the huge response of logging on n downloading that will be going on when this goes public?"!!!!
Doug @ Sep 17th 2008 6:17PM
Im gana say what I say to everyone about Home. If you really can't wait any longer, just pretend it was never announced and act all surprised when it is released, because it is unessesary to get stressed over simple things in life, just be happy that Sony shared all of this so far, they could have easily kept everything secret!
Jerses @ Sep 17th 2008 6:27PM
But we are ps3fanboys!!! we are all into rumors!! and it was announced like 3 times with delays!!!...wait i need my pills....ahhhh... home what?

Alijah Green @ Sep 17th 2008 6:30PM
sorry but this sounds like a waste of time, before get into action. as lazy as people are, wasting time to just to play a game. If you want the channel to change would you get up and change it yourself or use a remote. Really Sony, Japanese are way out of touch.
Vincent @ Sep 17th 2008 7:36PM

But really, I just don't see much of a point in Home
The Collective @ Sep 17th 2008 8:09PM
How about the so called "game spaces"? I remember there was a Warhawk planning room, a Resistance:FOM map exploration thing.
Were any more of those present?
scott @ Sep 17th 2008 8:32PM
lol to the first few lines 'your phone rings', because you STILL just cant invite them in! You cant MSN them from your PS3, you CAN use your tin can connected to a string and tell them to join you. But you just cant invite.
VinTheDean @ Sep 18th 2008 8:08AM
You are sunch an XBox FanBoy.
The reason why he called his friend is becuase HE WAS NOT ON LINE you idiot.
If you Xbox Friend is not online on his Xbox how else you going to get a hold of him.
You are just trying to find something wrong about the article. Get a life!

Too I didn't manage to get into the extended closed beta. I really want to know why some people didn't like it anymore after playing around with it for 20 min.
zdog513 @ Sep 18th 2008 2:51PM
verry nice ..... kind of like a storie about a place wear every one had a red afro
SnazzyD @ Sep 18th 2008 11:22AM
Hey GeekWarriorGamer,
You're either a troll plain and simple who doesn't even own a PS3 (let alone have beta access) or the worst beta candidate they could have chosen.
I represent the many, many people who see great potential and cannot wait to use Home to virtually connect to my friends and family scattered around the globe.
Why don't all you wet blankets just piss off and move out of your parent's basements finally. I resent the .5 seconds it takes to skip over your posts so I can read what a real fan has to say about things.
No, really...
ryan @ Sep 18th 2008 12:28AM
i use y'know, already available technology to connect to my friends and family around the globe. i don't need to clutter that with a cardboard cutout of something that is meant to look like me.
but maybe i'm just one of the many, many that want to go straight for the games, have fun, then move on with my life. Home is the epitome of why i don't spend time with virtual life sims or world of warcraft.
Windmill @ Sep 18th 2008 6:29AM
Well, you know, its great to meet up with people around the globe and all, but using such an inefficient system as this? Esshh.
I am not a PS3 owner but plan to buy one in a week. Home is definitely not the selling point. The only mildly interesting thing about it is the free games they're offering, but they're bound to suck.
trent @ Sep 17th 2008 11:18PM
i say bull get to there and sony says not coming out yet!!!!!!!!!!
Windmill @ Sep 18th 2008 6:26AM
I'm failing to see why we should care about Home?
I mean, come on, whats its purpose? Its just a clunky way to find people to play games with you. What a waste! Oh, and you get some lame-as games that will be gimped in it? I mean come on, its just... WHY... why build a house? So you can show other people, oh, oh look at my house? I mean its not like you even earned the stuff, other than if "buying" it counts. Its just... WHY.
Gate @ Sep 18th 2008 7:24AM
The only problem I have with this article is that it gives the impression that Home won't be region locked:
"and Andrew who's currently teaching in Japan"
So is that saying that Home is now NOT region locked, or is Japan part of the U.S. region?
SnazzyD @ Sep 18th 2008 11:39AM
You don't like it because...it's "inefficient"? Eesshh... Is your non-virtual reality more efficient than this? It's not like you have to walk everywhere if you don't want to.
Really not sure why you felt compelled to share an opinion here, but it's a free world (hey, just like Home!).
If the free mini games are the main feature you see Home providing (which are "bound to suck" according to your crystal ball) you really have missed the point, and Home is not for you. Which is fine since you're not required to use it, right?
I think this is an incredibly bold move that Sony is taking, and the benefits are many and varied. Can only imagine how much this will expand years from now...
umm....hello??? @ Sep 18th 2008 12:27PM
nice preview....but I'd rather have some awesome games to play than a Sims experience that just wastes my time and money.
IFLATLINEI @ Nov 30th 2008 12:10PM
They aren't complaining. Just saying fix all the things that we have now.
Tim Nicholson @ Sep 21st 2008 9:55PM
Its funny reading through all the banter back and forth about this. If we weed out the fanboys, you can slowly gleen some real information about it. Personally, I am very excited about PS Home. I know there are going to be things about it that I wish were better/more functional, but this is a great concept.
My kids and all their friends have Xbox 360's. I have a PS3 because its cool, plays Blueray movies, and I can keep them off of MY gaming system. However, that means I basically have no PS3 friends. I'm looking forward to Home as a way to interact with people on a slightly more personal level than just randomly playing someone on GHIII or ATV vs. MX or whatever and having NO idea who the person is.
This is an ambitous project that is truly revolutionary in nature and will evolve into a great social networking tool, far beyond MySpace and Facebook. Yes, its realeased late and yes, it will have features missing that we all want, but I believe someday it will evolve to greatness.
I don't even mind paying a few dollars here and there for some cool functionality. I really, really hope that at some point Sony opens up sharing streaming music, movies, picture slideshows, and even sharing online mini-games. I'd pay a small amount for those features and I think others would once the platform games momentum.
Jeff Rigby @ Sep 29th 2008 1:08PM
If Sony does a good job this will take off, if they don't it will just be a bandwidth waste. I can see possiblities for lots of business. Virtual Pizza Hut where you can go in and see the pizza you are ordering. Hotels that offer a preview of their rooms and beach views (I'm in Sarasota, Fl and that's our special draw).
Drawbacks: bandwidth of the internet, clumsy interface (joystick and typing), consumer education.
Tagging an internet camera so that it is the picture seen in your virtual home window would be a nice feature. Framerate can be limited as needed.
Encyclopedia for children. Medical reference doctors office are just some of the off hand thoughts.
This is the future of the information age. How many grandparents would like to video conference with their grandkids but it is too hard to do. (I know it's easy for us). The PS3 has a console beep. That should be enabled for a request for video chat. There should be a standby mode that allows detection of the above and a beep to the console.
HD TVs and LCD panels are part of the necessary support for home to evolve. A wider acceptance of a standard like home which at this time requires a PS3 or better because of the features it gives the consumer who can't use a computer. Picture mail, home automation, media server, home alarm, remote access to media and home security. can go on and on. Most of this is built into the Sony. I wonder why
DemonCrim @ Oct 2nd 2008 1:03PM
You know for this to be a fanboy site there is alot of bashing of Sony. Home is free, and most of all OPTIONAL I don't think anybody should make it there personal mission to change other peoples minds about home. If you don't like something about home then go to sony's forum and ask them to change or fix something and if enough ppl back you they are bound to listen but ppl that come to this site to get information about home doesn't really want to see you rant. Just my opinion.
