SingStar patch enables PS3 disc-swapping (but not PS2 yet)

We tested the new functionality with an early preview version of SingStar Vol. 2 and it works just as you'd expect. When you're in the song carousel, hit SELECT and you'll be able to insert a new disc. Placing SingStar in the drive brings back ye old song list. Placing a PS2 disc in the drive will simply result in an error message.
We're eagerly awaiting the eventual patch will allow PS2 games to be used in the PS3 SingStar games. That's exactly how we'd like to enjoy games like the PS2-exclusive SingStar Country.
[Thanks, Joe B.!]

I think that's the US version. The one on ThreeSpeech is the UK version.

Thats cool but from what i know and think, since backwards compatibility has been removed from the PS3s now being produced there probably will be little chance of a PS2 singstar disc-swap patch since not everyone has backwards compatible PS3 but then again thats my opinion
Dr. Strangepork @ Sep 18th 2008 9:15AM
I think I read in several places that BC is not required to read the PS2 discs for SingStar. You're not actually playing the game so BC is not needed. You're simply reading the files on the disc.
This all sounds good, but I'll reserve judgment until that patch is released and we see how well it really works.
I'd pass on disc swapping and using PS2 games for a better song selection on the US Singstore. But that broken record isn't being listened to by Sony apparently.

Apparently the SingStar backwards compatibility doesn't require a backwards-compatible PS3. That's because it's not actually executing PS2 software--it's basically just reading the music data files directly off the DVD.

US version of the cover. I guess short hair and glasses are a European thing.

I lol'd at SingStar Country.

Any guesses on whether the swapping with ps2 is region locked?
I really want to import singstar bollywood so my family can start playing together.. but i dont have a pal ps2 or tv. so if swapping works with pal stuff then...
Deaddy @ Sep 18th 2008 12:38AM
I'm sure it will be region locked, PS2 games are region locked on PS3, and Sony has been really anal about the regional song rights and keeping certain regions from accessing certain groups of songs (see singstore and the different PS2 song lists from different countries, etc.)
DeforMAKulizer @ Sep 17th 2008 10:53PM
I have had that feature months ago!!! Imported Vol 2 from Uk and was able to swap between it and Vol 1 with utter ease...
Mark @ Sep 17th 2008 11:22PM
Disk Swap?!
What's the use of Singstore then?
If their disks contained 80 songs like RB2 then it would've been ok. But a 30 songs on the much touted Blu-Ray disk? Cmon!
This isn't forward thinking at all.
Jeff @ Sep 17th 2008 11:55PM
Does it cost anything to do this? like how rockband is charging $5 to rip content.
I am basically asking if when I buy vol 2 I could just pick my faves from vol 1 and sell the disc afterwards?
Andrew Yoon @ Sep 18th 2008 1:57AM
You can't rip songs onto the hard drive. You can swap discs is all.
Jeff @ Sep 18th 2008 9:50AM
Apparently I didn't read it haha.
Repoman @ Sep 18th 2008 3:10AM
A few hours ago?
I did that disc swap thingie at least tvo days ago. Thought that feature was installed per default with "Volume 2", but don't quoute me on that.
Random Hangman @ Sep 18th 2008 4:25AM
Why's Cat Deeley on the cover?
Damian @ Sep 18th 2008 8:39AM
This patch is worthless until we can use the PS2 discs as well.
JoeBen @ Sep 18th 2008 9:45AM
your welcome.
I was hoping it would patch the leak of crappy songs coming out of SS online. Ah Well.

Wrong, we'd like to enjoy them by being able to rip to HD so we don't have to swap discs.

Did you forget that new ps3 got no backwards compatibility. So stop dreaming about that.
