Trophies mandatory 'soon', hints Capcom's John Diamonon
In the comments for a post on PlayStation.Blog, a reader complains about other commenters complaining about the lack of trophy support for games like Mega Man 9. "The day will come when you get trophies in almost every game then you will complain about something else ignorant."
John Diamonon of Capcom posts a follow-up comment to the statement, hinting "that day is coming soon." We already know Capcom's contract with Sony stipulate Trophy support for all future titles, but is Diamonon hinting at something more widespread? Considering how obsessed we can be about Trophies, we hope to hear something more official soon. Do you guys think Sony should require all games to have Trophy support in the near future, similar to the Microsoft requirement that all their titles contain Achievements?

lolcomowut?!!! o_O
That was fulll of PHAIL for so many reasons! Oh thats right I forgot where I was...
citizeninsane27 @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:25PM
Of course it should be mandatory after 09. I believe I heard that was what Sony was doing anyways.
JerJerBinks @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:37PM
OMG, Land of Trill is the king of the run-on sentence. I cant even make sense of 90% of that post, its completely mind blowing.
Xtechnolgy @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:57PM
lol same here
Metal_Gear @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:49PM
its obvious that that was what they were going to do. They couldn't do it straight away and that would delay games in production and Sony dont do delays... >_>
We wont have people on every forum asking if a certain game is going to have trophies or not and no lazy bastard developers *cough*EAandInfinityWard*cough* not putting them in games.
I never usually play games on their extreme difficulty but the Crushing Trophy on Uncharted made me try it and I had a lot of fun doing it, so hopefully there will be more trophies that will encourage me to try something else I never would of normally.
devilmaker @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:01PM
EA is becoming surprisingly good now, I don't really mind it anymore if the EA logo is slapped on a title. They've got games coming with patches for trophies and so on... (Paradise, Bad Company)
Popfrogs @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:40PM
Please note the distinction between games EA makes and games EA publishes.
Criterion published Burnout Paradise THROUGH EA. EA didn't make BP. You can tell because it's a great game and has gotten incredible support after launch and continues to grow, similar to Warhawk. EA doesn't do this sort of thing. It's not profitable.
Now, Battlefield: Bad Company, that was made by Dice and published by EA. However it fits EA's poor quality standards. 6 months after release it still has mic, sound bugs and lag problems out the wazzoo. They released their Conquest bolt-on without patching it first. So..it's hard to draw a line here and point at EA or Dice. Both of them suck at this point.
Fane @ Sep 22nd 2008 8:41PM
@Popfrogs I think EA owns both devs now.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:55PM
How is that "a hint?" It was exactly what he said.
If I say "I have an apple" am I 'hinting' that I have an apple?
Nick @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:00PM
Of course it should be mandatory. It's not like it takes forever to put them in and, if they want to, they can use the exact same ones used for Xbox Live Achievements. I really don't care about the level I obtain from trophies (in fact, I find people who brag about gamerpoints/trophy level pretty damn annoying). I care about the replay value the trophies present and being able to see 100% by the game in my trophy list.
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:23PM
The reason for the leveling up stance is that it doesn't reward game-buying whores who just go out and buy a bunch of sh*t games just so they can rack up on a bunch of easy (achievement) points and consider themselves 1337. In the trophy system, they would not be as rewarded and seen as the best of the best because in actuality they aren't. Yes, they love games, but that should speak from the # of games advertised under their Gamertag/PSN ID, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're a better gamer because of it.
They have not IMO earned the right to consider themselves a better gamer than me; the one who (hypothetically speaking) does have the talent/mindset/will/etc. to obtain the higher-level trophies that a lot of other gamers will not be able to get.
IMO, the trophy system (from an overall gaming-ability comparable standpoint) just makes more sense than the achievement system.
maxpontiac @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:04PM
I just love hearing all the folks whining (the post by Land of Trill, for example) about people complaining about non trophy supported games.
Sony should have done this with day one.
Uncharted and SSHD have done well once the patch came out.
Invisible Robot Meat @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:21PM
Trophies are great for people that like them, but I couldn't possibly care less. If a game is fun I play it, when it gets stale and monotonous, I move on to something else.
Daniel @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:33PM
I agree with Devin but I also am with Invisible Robot Meat...I think the level system on PS3 makes more sense than some silly number next to your name on 360 that unless you look at WHAT games/achievments they got that number from, you have no way of telling how good that game is. The level system works so much better.
At the same time I don't care about trophies/achievements. I rarely go out of my way to get them. I just get the ones I get from playing the game. If it's a game I'm really into like wrestling games then I may go out of my way to complete as many as I can/want to complete but usually I don't care about them.
tboy123 @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:37PM
It would be cool to have trophies in every game. They are a good way to get people to play a game more than one time. The only problem I see with them being mandatory is that some games will just have useless trophies IE: "get through act 1" or "Die once". As long as the game trophies continue to give a challenge, then I would be happy. The only other thing they need to change is the platinum trophies! I would like something awesome, not just "Get every other trophy"
my triangle tie @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:37PM
It's true. As of next year all games released on PS3 will have to have Trophies.
Mr. Joe @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:38PM
i'm not a fan of trophies, but i don't oppose games that choose to offer them. the word of focus in that last sentence is "choose." making things mandatory should turn off developers because developers shouldn't be thinking in the box. my guess is they'll get lazy and be like "trophy for beating level 1," "trophy for beating level 2," and so forth. if devs put thought into it, and they want them for unique reasons, they'll put trophies in. if devs don't put thought into it, and they're required to, the trophies are gonna be lame.
my saying is "less is more." if less games have trophies, the harder it is to be a trophy whore. if every game offers easy trophies, we all become whores and nobody will be able to tell the real whores from the non-whores. and who wants to live in a world like that?
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 6:07PM
From what I understand, trophies get approved by Sony, just like MS, and since Sony has the leveling system they said they would make sure that (for example) 1 Silver trophy in one game would be equivalent in difficulty in another. Take that how you will, but that's how I understood it. You should watch the video on FW2.40 where he talks about that.
Jon Acheson @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:43PM
I'd personally like to see custom soundtrack support get pushed instead of trophies that I could not begin to care about.
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 8:30PM
How about both? Can't we have both?
Lars @ Oct 8th 2008 8:48PM
I'm on the other side. I could care less about custom soundtracks. I don't understand why people would want them, almost to the point that it angers me. Game devs spent all this time and money creating a soundtrack for you, so using a custom sound track is like saying "F*** U" to their face. But still, I concede that it's something that people want and I'll never understand (like gay sex) so I say bring on the custom soundtracks for you!
Trophies are fun occasionally. PixelJunk Eden has mostly awful, uninspired trophies such as "Collect all Spectra in garden 1," "Collect all Spectra in garden 2," "Collect all Spectra in garden 3," etc. Warhawk on the other hand has some really really fun trophies. For example, I was flying a warhawk and hit some guy using a jetpack... it popped up with the trophy called "That Was Some Bug!" I laughed pretty hard at that one.
OddyOh @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:46PM
I don't care about trophies, hit me with mandatory Custom Soundtracks! Starting with a NHL 09 patch (the music in that game is woeful!).
zuburi @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:47PM
How did you guys get "trophies will be mandatory" from this?!
All I got was that "the day will come soon that trophies are in almost every game."
Ted @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:03PM
Yeah, Trophy's are not the main selling point but would sway my decision if I was on the edge to buy a game or not...
All games should have mandatory trophy's though!
TheHeartless @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:09PM
It should be mandatory so that there is actually a standard with all of this. We cannot keep going along while M$ and the big N have their own standardized infrastructures—rules everyone has to play by—while Sony just twiddles its' thumbs. Rumble? If you want. Trophies? If it's worth your time. That's not the way it should be, a platform should be defined by its features but if the features aren't mandatory than what's the point? That's like saying "you can develop your PS3 games on DVD-ROMs if you really want, instead of Blu-Ray."
Jerses @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:40PM
Trophies are more important than archivements because trophies will be virtually displayed in PS Home..... or maybe they will drop that like the streaming videos :P Anyway...Trophies make you play to full the game you buy and not just the 70% of it or less.
Ollebro @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:46PM
i want Trophies for MGS4...
mercurywa @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:51PM
Personally, I am all for it; because once EVERYTHING has a trophy attached to it, nothing is special anymore. It's "easy" to be a trophy who-ER with 10 or so games... not so much when it's 200.
truth be told @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:53PM
They should definately be mandatory for the simple reason that some people have openly admitted to purchasing the 360 version of a game because it has achievments to earn. If the lack of trophies can alter your sales then it seems like the only move that should be made. Trophies add more depth to a game; it allows users to work for something other than an end.
Windmill @ Sep 22nd 2008 6:23PM
Yes it should be mandatory, if only because it'll help Sony sell games and won't lose sales on multiplatform games to microsofts camp so people can get "achievements". So then sony can keep making money, and can keep making awesome hardware that doesn't break + free online + great 1st/2nd party games!
iamkid @ Sep 22nd 2008 6:42PM
i would say yes, that would be great, because then i wouldnt have to be all 'omg this game has trophies,' thus making me buy it instead of a better game. if they all have it, itll be the same as before, except with a little bonus
Jacksons @ Sep 22nd 2008 8:27PM
Is this really debatable? I would expect any game that starts development from here on out to have them. Begging for them to be retrofitted into games already released or in development is stupid and futile. If they are, consider it a gift.
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 8:29PM
Is that jealously I hear?
Someone who knows the Trophy system is better and that 360's point value system doesn't actually serve it's purpose other than getting game whores to buy more games to earn more points?
Lastly, I guess you consider MS's Mii-copycats to be a better proposition? Go back where you belong....
Devin @ Sep 22nd 2008 10:39PM
Don't get me wrong though, I love MS's achievement system, in the sense that it was new/innovative and forced Sony into implementing it into PS3's architecture since it clearly wasn't meant to be there to begin with, but still, MS's system isn't perfect and the point value system does have its flaws in the sense that it's hard to actually prove your gaming abilities vs. others without having to dig deeper into it and actually compare each game one by one....
Levi @ Sep 22nd 2008 11:55PM
I treat trophies as a way of giving good games more replay value. It's one thing to do cool difficult stuff in games, it's another to have a standard of cool difficult things to do... "Dude omfg I got the bomber trophy this weekend!!" "OMFG NO WAY dude I tried that shazz like 300 timez!!!@@@"
I would never base a purchase on the existence of trophies though. That's retarted.
In other news, MM9 isn't going to have trophies?? It has achievements, wtf?
Kspraydad @ Sep 23rd 2008 7:59AM
Nor does it have Remote Play or Youtube uploading...poor effort by Capcom (again).
kpdc1 @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:26PM
i want trophies in every game that comes out from now on, iam not a trophie whore i just think it would be a good idea and one less thing the xbox has over the ps3. I have all systems and i like the trophy system better than achievements, plus i want all trophies to be fully compattable with HOMEs 3D trophies
Gonzo @ Sep 23rd 2008 12:37PM
I don't see the point really.
Why are they going to make things worse for the programmers. I don't think they should give any publisher any reason to avoid the ps3. If programmers don't want trophies to be in their game, they shouldn't have to force it. It'll just make the whole concept even more contrived and gimmicky, and the whole trophy scene reeks of that already.
Lars @ Oct 8th 2008 8:48PM
To the wanna be Jack T: Why are you so angry? Stop flinging around "Sony Fanboy" like an insult. Nobody ever said they were different! Sure Achievements/Trophies can be fun, but they're no system seller. And as a software engineer I really don't like them being mandatory. Giving the option is a great solution because for dev's who want to go that extra mile, it's awesome... but if it's mandatory then there's a lot of uninspired Achievements/Trophies, and it kinda takes all the fun out of it. Your Gamerscore doesn't mean jack shit if there's an achievement whore out there renting every game ever made, playing Barbie's Dream Pony just to get some easy Achievements.
"I love MS's achievement system, in the sense that it was new/innovative"
LOL, if you think MS came up with that, you are sadly mistaken. The only thing MS did was bring it to a console's online service, which was the next logical step.
