Scott Steinberg: The PS3 will 'separate from the herd'
Scott Steinberg gets a little feisty in a blog entry for Edge Online -- he outlines the advantages of the PS3 and issues a big warning to its rivals. "I've got bad news for you because we've got some absolute blockbusters that are in the works ... that we're building specifically for the PS3 ... our competitors are going to have a tougher road now then even in 2008.""Choice" is the central theme of the piece. According to the Steinberg, the PS3 owner has the freedom of choice: between Blu-ray and downloadable movies or between "blockbusters" titles and games from "creative little garage companies." Other more abstract notions of that idea include the wide selection of games and movies on the PSN without requiring a subscription. Even the hardware itself -- "the technology, the Cell processor, the horsepower under that hood" -- was listed as an asset developers can choose to take advantage of, even years down the road.
Steinberg promises that in a few years, the PS3 will "separate from the herd." He boasts that Sony has the "development resources to showcase on a global basis the diversity and the creativity of a development team that's a thousand strong." Some strong words there, sir! To read the entire keynote, head over to Edge Online.

Confirmed: consoles are actually sheeps in disguise.

lobotomies4free @ Sep 25th 2008 8:50PM
i love how sony is supporting more abstract projects. From Flow(er) and Echochrome to Heavy Rain and LBP
Jack Tretton @ Sep 25th 2008 8:56PM
Yeah, it *is* simple: Rent or buy The Dark Knight or Transformers on Blu-ray, or download the latest Dane Cook 'comedy' from the PSN Store and let it take up space on your hard drive.

These are not choices that separate the PS3 from it's competitors unless he means Microsoft and Nintendo blowing past them in the America market. You can already download HD Movies on the 360 as well as episodes of some of your favorite shows. Sony started to do well in the US when they started treating the system like a gaming machine first and a media machine second... if they start switching that around again it's going to hurt them. As for their games I think GT5 and GoW3 are their biggest assets left right now... any new IPs or IPs that are sequels by a company that has only produced one good game are suspect. They have a touch road ahead of them now that the Arcade system is a viable platform. I wish them the best of luck because competition breeds greatness.

Whoops! That's what I get for trying to post and talk on the phone at the same time. Guess I next ought to try simultaneously walking and chewing gum.
MexicanTerrorist @ Sep 25th 2008 9:15PM
I love Sony to death, but my God, tell the PR guys to back up their claims.
We want to know about these "super games" that'll seperate the PS3 from the pack.
And don't delay them either.
Dartmerc @ Sep 25th 2008 10:52PM
Umm.. LBP, Heavy Rain, Flower - want me to continue? ..Well I can't off the top of my head.
ACEDOH @ Sep 25th 2008 10:13PM
SONY can make all the claims they want. The consumers will buy the best priced console. Here in North America it's going to be very hard to convince consumers even with great games that the PS3 is a worthwhile value. Lower the price this holiday season and we will see people flocking in droves...
Devin @ Sep 26th 2008 2:40PM
IMO, Sony is marketing for the more intelligent consumer to buy their console (i.e. the ones who actually understand value proposition, know how to purchase movies online, have the gear needed for BR movies, etc.) I don't see price as being the only factor in winning because 360 can still cost you the same as PS3 if you want the HDD, Live and/or Wireless. Yes, 360 is winning on price and sheer # of games to choose from currently (though I wouldn't consider 360's catalog any better than PS3's), but intelligent consumers should know that Sony isn't playing this for the short-term and that there will be blockbusters coming. Heck, I could already name a good number right now for the ones that are officially out.
Price does matter yes, but what are you getting for it, is what's key.
Devin @ Sep 26th 2008 2:53PM
edit
360 is winning on INITIAL price. Also, we don't know what the PS3 would cost if it had no HDD or no wireless.
Nate @ Sep 25th 2008 10:25PM
YES! now this is the type of stuff I would come to ps3fanboy to read. Thank you! you know, its hard to find coherent praise for things I like sometimes. My day is now much better.
iamkid @ Sep 25th 2008 10:41PM
horray for long term value :)
also, i read this:
"creative little garage companies."
as this:
"creative little garbage companies."
lol

Hi. Thanks for your non-opinion of "stuff that we take for granted" and your other regurgitations.
Shut the hell up about your crappy website.
Dartmerc @ Sep 26th 2008 3:03AM
Hi. Thanks for your non-comment, and how about you don't click the link if you don't want to visit?
Chris @ Sep 26th 2008 9:59AM
Future promises is all I here about with the ps3
Our extra horsepower this and that
Bullsh1t if no one can design for it!!!
I'm interested in the here and now, I've still not seen anygames which wouldn't be possible on the 360, other than the BluRay disk filing up with uncompressed sound, and duplicated textures due to the weird ps3 architecture needing them, and the massive amount of tutorials on lbp
Promises, promises promises, it's a great machine, but com 'on
Dartmerc @ Sep 26th 2008 6:44PM
Chris, what do you expect this early on?
Were you around for the PS1 or even the PS2 - it takes years before developers can make the full use of the hardware, and thats half the fun of it, watching in amazement how much extra they can get out of the hardware year after year.
Chris @ Sep 27th 2008 5:05AM
Yep I've been around since the master system
had the ps1, 2 and now 3
I'm sick to death Sony's hype machine
2008 is the year of the ps3, now we're told it's 2009, and all the time microsoft is cutting the price of its console, and shifting boxes
LBP is the way forward, but the 360 has great exclusives too
multiplatform games still look better on the 360, and we're told that the ps3 would become the lead platform, also there's nothing on the ps3 that wouldn't be possible on the so called inferior 360 apart from bluray full of textures because the slow read speeds mean you draw data off it on the fly like you can DVD's on the 360
Brucie B @ Sep 26th 2008 7:46AM
Ahhh... Great, We'll See... Not holding my breath either...Now lets get Gaming!!
Ohhh Wait my PS3 is in Texas getting Fixed!! SUCKS!!
deaftly @ Sep 26th 2008 10:38AM
More of the just wait bullshit while MS and Nintendo are going to own this holiday season again......
syllableslayer @ Sep 27th 2008 10:48PM
I can't wait for GOW2 either, afterwards i'll be first in line for th... I mean wh..... or the sequal to ..... um.... gow2 dlc ftw!
Darlaten @ Sep 26th 2008 12:03PM
I have to agree with some of the other posters on here - its another, typical, message from Sony that simply states "wait and see, we promise it will be good".
This message, one that we have been hearing for the better part of a few years, is simply getting old, tired, and worn out.
If you really want to show the world what the system can do, then back it up by having actual games and products that people can see and play. Continuing to talk about it without being able to back your words up with a product is ludicrous.
As an example, I bought a PS3 solely because of the game Heavenly Sword - thought it looked beautiful, played well, and so forth. It showcased just what the PS3 can do.
Sony needs to be doing more of this on a regular basis to encourage non-users to purchase the system.
deaftly @ Sep 26th 2008 2:40PM
I totally agree, I never see any commercials for ps3. You would have thought they would have been promoting the shit out of LBP. Also yea, HS rocked.
Devin @ Sep 26th 2008 4:00PM
I don't understand. If LBP is possible on 360, then where is it?
Also, what games does 360 have this Xmas that PS3 can't compete with? Seriously, take your bias somewhere else.
Devin @ Sep 26th 2008 4:33PM
Also, where are all of these commercials for 360? I hardly EVER see a game console advertisement on TV, ever. Maybe during the holidays or during a huge game like Halo where they know it's mass appeal can shift consoles, but that's it.
Oh, and there's deaftly!
