70 screenshots for The Last Remnant plus battle mechanics details
We really haven't heard anything about The Last Remnant for a while now -- the game's PS3 version still lacks a release date (the delay is attributed to the Unreal Engine while the 360 version will be out this November) and details on the game mechanics are fuzzy at best.
Luckily for fans, Siliconera has unearthed some information on the battle mechanics for the multiplatform RPG. It is being summarized as a "turn-based RPG with multiple parties" -- you control several parties of up to five characters each. Instead of issuing direct commands to the members of the party, you issue more generalized directions such as "time to get physical/mystical" (physical/magical attacks on enemies) or "attack, but stay healthy" (attack close-ranged enemies while healing) to the entire party. Finally, there's also a morale meter on the top of the battle screen: high morale means you deal more damage while damage received will be reduced and vice versa.
This whole system doesn't sound especially innovative to us. So instead of controlling 4-5 members of your party in a typical RPG, you control 4-5 parties that work in a similar fashion? We'll reserve our final judgment for the game when it comes out though, not that we know when that will happen. Check out the latest screenshots for the game -- you can find all 70 of them in the gallery below.

Not to hyped for this game :(
kevin @ Sep 27th 2008 3:07PM
nope.
BOOOOOOO
ajiezer @ Sep 27th 2008 2:59PM
I'm not impressed at the screens
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 27th 2008 3:14PM
What?! These are looking great. Good textures, nicely detailed characters...what's not to like?
ryan @ Sep 27th 2008 5:20PM
what's not to like? how about the fact that it's a timed exclusive this year for 360 and will hit PC and PS3 at a later date.
...yes that has everything to do with how good screenshots look. /sarcasm
(they do look gorgeous btw).
Gambit07 @ Sep 27th 2008 3:01PM
The Unreal engine is making something off about the graphics...
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 27th 2008 3:10PM
As I understand it, the innovative part of the game is that you're fighting full on wars. Any combination of these generalized attacks can lead to great success or total failure, but it's not in a rock-paper-scissor fashion because of the morale meter. It's pretty much RTS-lite where you issue commands to a group of people to perform a certain task.
I'm glad Square is differentiating their game portfolio. I've been getting sick of traditional RPGs so I'm intrigued by this mix of RTS and RPG in a non-typical fashion. Looking forward to it, but I am sort of bummed that 360 gets the jump on this one.

But will it actually be fun? Sounds nice in theory (I guess) but then again, they tried to do something different with Final Fantasy XII and we all know how that turned out.
Haohmaru @ Sep 27th 2008 4:50PM
Hey, some of us liked FFXII.
ryan @ Sep 27th 2008 6:05PM
Finally! someone who looks forward to the game and isn't blindfolded by it not being released on the PS3 first. i think the game is going to be pretty interesting. I like the dual perspectives you can take on.
i rather they waited for all versions of the game to be released at the same time like FF13. but i'd look forward to this game even if it was solely for PS3. it looks like a quality Squeenix title, unlike Infinite Undiscovery.
i just get sick of fanboyism to a point where it blocks out great games because they aren't released on a platform of your choice, despite the look and quality of the title.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 28th 2008 4:58AM
@ ryan
Well thats their loss I suppose. I remember people were swearing off FF13 and RB2 and others because of their timed exclusivity and all I can say is that's just pathetic.
@ dip
That's a good point. None of us know if it will be a fun game to play but at least it is attempting something new with something familiar. And I REALLY loved FFXII. The story was just fantastic and once you get used to what you're doing you can totally dominate.
@ haohmaru
See someone thinks the same way I do! :D

This game is going to flop hard on the PS3 for the simple fact that it's not going to be released the same day as the 360 version. Then of course you're going to get the whining from the developers that no one bought the PS3 version of the game. When will they realize that only a small percentage of people who only own either a PS3 or 360 only are willing to wait 6+ mos to play a game out on another system all that time.
If it's multiplatform delay it till it's ready for everything, if not then you're better off just making it an exclusive since you know the later version is going to bomb hard.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 28th 2008 5:02AM
Hey, any sales they get are money for them. But yeah I understand what you're saying and it doesn't make sense to me either.
But I'm pretty sure Last Remnant's delay is only by a few weeks so it's not as bad as, say, Splinter Cell was.

I don't know.... I still buying Bioshock :)
Yes 6 month for a RPG is a long time, even longer if we didn't have the Epic exclusive games coming October and November.
RasenganFury @ Sep 27th 2008 4:02PM
I wont be picking this game up, i'll wait for White Knight Story.
j.howlett @ Sep 27th 2008 4:35PM
i probably know more about white knight story than this, but i haven't looked into it much because all i heard was how it was coming to the 360 first if not exclusive. that might be a good way to get 360 owners excited but i just payed attention to ps3 games.
doc j @ Sep 27th 2008 5:13PM
Maybe it is a good thing that they are delaying releasing this. I certainly wouldn't buy it in this packed season. Perhaps if it comes out in, I dunno. March or April, I could be persuaded to get it. Only if it turns out awesome though, as for now I don't have much interest in this game.
freeblue @ Sep 27th 2008 6:04PM
is this game subscription based??
Hashbrown Hunter @ Sep 28th 2008 5:05AM
....it's not an MMO. You pay for the game, you can play it as much as you want.
ryan @ Sep 27th 2008 6:05PM
yeah, it's not like people have been complaining of the lack of JRPGs out for the PS3...oh wait, they have... :/
more choice of games the better i say.
B.Blabby @ Sep 27th 2008 6:23PM
If this game flops like Alone in the Dark then hey maybe PS3 owners will get a superior version of Last Remanant. If Level-5 announce a Worldwide Release for WKC at TGS then screw this game. WKC all the way,
Mattchewie @ Sep 27th 2008 8:20PM
It looks good. However, I'm still confused by how they will release this early in on the box first yet, FF gets held back in NA while they port it.
...makes no sense. If the box can get a timed exclusive due to "issues" with the Unreal Engine then the PS3 should get FF as a timed exclusive while port it over to the box.
ryan @ Sep 27th 2008 8:39PM
except that Last Remnant is a world wide release and FF13 is a regional release with Japan getting it first. while it's being localized a 360 port will be made, getting them out at the same time.
it's weird dumb and i feel for my PS3 brethren on this.
zecomer27 @ Sep 27th 2008 8:33PM
We better get a version with extra content or else there's no way i'm buying it.
So its alright for ps3 users to wait but not for f***box???!!(i'm talking about FF13 btw)
Why can't they hold it back for a common release date? Is it M$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$again?
Seriously wtf is wrong with SquareEnix these days...
ryan @ Sep 27th 2008 8:39PM
it's difficulty with the Unreal Engine. that's their excuse. so that's why they are going ahead with the 360 version.
which makes me wonder how the hell some people like Epic can make an Unreal 3 game run on the PS3 and Squeenix can't.
ocdog45 @ Sep 27th 2008 11:32PM
I'm just glad its turned based. i hate what RPG's have evolved to.
Ngai @ Sep 28th 2008 4:24AM
You've got to admit that it does look good and promissing! Lets hope it keeps up to the expectations.
magicianoffear @ Sep 29th 2008 9:58AM
I have never been able to shake the feeling that this game was just going to stink. It has nothing to do with the timed exclusive 360 release or that it's multi plat, there was always just something about it that looked bad. Perhaps it's the graphics (color pallet is too dull for me), but the character design is not all that inspired either. Kind of like Infinite Undiscovery which was a total let down, not to mention has the lamest art direction for and RPG I have seen in a long time. Square-Enix just is not what they use to be, their PSP titles Final Fantasy 13 and Versus are the only games I am excited for. Really unless Tetsuya Nomura is involved with the game, S-E games usually under achieve.
Yazuka @ Sep 29th 2008 12:00PM
Still no news or rumors when the PS3 & version will get a release?
