Pedro F. asks: What is going to happen with the PS3 MGS4 80GB Bundle? I'm really worried about it because I was saving all year long for a trip to the US in October to (among other things) get my PS3, which by the way I want to get with BC because I have tons of PS1 and 2 games that I still want to play. I don't have space for both PS2 and PS3 at the same time in my room (I even sold my PS2), so I was really excited about the MGS4 pack.
PS3F answers: Bad news Pedro. The 80GB MGS4 bundle will be the last SKU to have BC, and it will be replaced by the 160GB PS3 bundle that comes with a voucher for PAIN and a copy of Uncharted. It'll be replaced officially in November and most likely the MGS4 bundle has already been discontinued. It'll probably be very difficult to find one now, unless you check eBay. Good luck.
Abebe T. asks: I recently bought a PlayStation 3 (MGS4 bundle, if that makes a difference) and I've noticed that it makes a noticeable sound while in standby mode (red light). My PS3 is in my room and although this noise is relatively very quiet, it bothers me while I'm trying to sleep. As a result, I'm forced to turn it fully off using the power switch on the back. It seems like the system was designed to simply be put into standby and only turned fully off once in a while. Is it harmful to the system to be turning it off and on like this every day?
PS3F answers: It is not harmful, so you can keep doing that. However, you might want to take your system to Sony and have it checked. The PS3 should not be making any noises while in standby. Essentially, the machine should not be working out any processes and should not be doing anything. So anything other than silence and a red light is very odd.
Dillon A. asks: I was wondering if the latest updates for Blu-ray players are included in the latest PS3 Firmware updates? Or do we have to download them separately?
PS3F answers: Blu-ray support will be updated in regular PS3 Firmware updates. It's good to know that things are simplified like that, eh?

Bruno N. asks: Will online ranks from Resistance carry over to Resistance 2?
PS3F answers: We asked this question for you at the recent R2 event. Insomniac says it's not going to happen.
Michael H. asks: Now that Rock Band is coming out with more metal bands (Devildriver, Machinehead and Megadeth) is there some way to plug in two kicks, because these bands use a lot of double bass and that would be really cool to do.
PS3F answers: Rock Band 1 drum kits don't and won't ever, but Rock Band 2 drum kits will be able to support dual kick pedals sometime in the future ... just not now.
Tom B. asks: Will the current Rock Band DLC be downloadable directly to Rock Band 2? I know there's a transfer for people who have Rock Band, but what if Rock Band 2 is the first game I buy?
PS3F answers: Okay, it works like this. When you buy DLC tracks, you install them onto your hard drive. They will remain there as part of your "game data" and will work with both titles. So whether you put in an RB or RB2 disc, both games will pick up the songs stored on the hard drive.
Christian S.: What happened to Rat Race? The episodic comedy game that was announced on the US PlayStation Blog in October last year seems to have gone missing. It was supposed to be beginning 'this winter' last October so that is a rather long delay.
PS3F answers: We regretfully inform you that this title is canceled.

titus3n5 asks: Is there a PS3 Fanboy mobile in the works? If not are you guys planning on there being one? that would be the awesomest!
PS3F answers: We have a few mobile versions out there. We've got two that you can check out:
- iPhone/iPod Touch - http://i.ps3fanboy.com
- Standard Mobile - http://m.ps3fanboy.com
Kyle T. asks: Really, how hard is it to implement Trophies in a PS3 game? I read that Bethesda is going to leave out Trophies in Fallout 3 -- is this a result of Microsoft making an "agreement" with them to keep the awards solely on the 360, or is it really that difficult to translate the 360 Achievements over to the PS3?
PS3F answers: It has nothing to do with Microsoft or Achievements, so please don't look at it that way. In the case of Fallout 3, you need to remember that this game has been in development way longer than the appearance of Trophies; Achievements were always going to be in it because they've been around for a long time already and probably have been part of the plan since the beginning of development. Trophies are new and were introduced probably by the time Bethesda was moving on to polish and fine tuning everything -- it's quite too late to put in new code.
Think about Jeopardy!; the title doesn't have Trophy support yet but the in-game awards certainly would make good XMB Trophies. So why then did it not have Trophies? This is a PS3-exclusive ... can't be Microsoft's fault now can it? It all really has to do with the development schedule; developers need to meet certain milestones in order to keep their games on track and out on time for you. Adding new code for Trophies and working out the connectivity to the PSN etc etc obviously will be time consuming (implementation and testing). If Trophies are going to interfere with that sched, then there's no way these developers can stop everything they're doing and put in the feature.
Sean E. asks: Is Afrika a.k.a (Hakuna Matata) coming to North America? And do you think it is the type of game that is worthy of a worldwide release?
PS3F answers: Well, looking back to this Japanese commercial, it seems the Japanese themselves were conscious of the fact that Afrika would probably not be for everyone. SCEE have also said that the game won't be released in Europe, and a North American release seems rather unlikely at this point. We haven't yet played it but it does seem like an interesting -- if not novel -- experience.

IMO if Afrika doesn't make it over here to the US then Sony is making a mistake. The game looks amazing (for being a PSN game) and I would hope Sony doesn't think the Japanese are the only one's interested in photography/African safari......
Please Sony, bring Afrika to the US.
KinjiroSSD @ Sep 27th 2008 6:21PM
I agree. It would be a great addition to the US line up. Saying a game isn't for everyone can be said about almost any game.
Daniel @ Sep 27th 2008 6:54PM
Why does everyone think Afrika is a PSN title? It is a disc based game. I too would LOVE to play Afrika but only if it had and english text/soundtrack of course since I can only read/speak english. I agree it would be a mistake to not bring it to America. Perhaps if it sells well enough in Japan it will make it's way stateside....here's hoping!
Rat Race being cancelled really bummed me out too...that game looked like major win.
Dahk @ Sep 27th 2008 7:01PM
Actually, Afrika would be a really good chance to promote their Sony Alpha series DSLRs - which have been getting better and better. They just can't exactly crank out the Nikon/Canon dynamic duos lol, but this game might help out I think.
duckhunt8 @ Sep 27th 2008 7:54PM
Afrika is coming to Europe in '09 apparently.

If not NA, then at least we should be able to import an English version :P

I never leave my PS3 on standby. The moment it goes to the red light for standby, the switch is turned off. I bet you the PS3 still uses quite some power even when on standby.
Kyle T. @ Sep 27th 2008 6:53PM
The PS3 uses the least of all of the consoles actually on standby, with the Wii using the most by default since it keeps wireless running at all times.
It uses more if you have remote turn-on enabled, but I've kept that off since I don't use it unless I'm on vacation.
Popfrogs @ Sep 27th 2008 11:23PM
I leave mine on 24/7. Never hurt my original 60GB and it hasn't hurt my replacement either.
BTW that replacement was free from Sony after the 1 year warranty due to GTA4 freezes.
Vincent @ Sep 27th 2008 6:21PM
What Happened to RED BARON ARCADE?
I've asked this question on almost every PSN topic sense the 18th.
Jake @ Sep 27th 2008 6:22PM
as usual they didn't answer mine!
Majed Athab @ Sep 27th 2008 11:09PM
Hi Jake, did you make sure your email had "Ask PS3 Fanboy" in the title?
Also, keep in mind there's still over 150 other emails that need to be read... so please be understanding if we don't get to your question right away.
Sly @ Sep 27th 2008 6:23PM
actually while in standby mode the ps3 uses 0-1 wats
DavidJuaquin @ Sep 28th 2008 11:54AM
May I see your proof?
Sly @ Sep 28th 2008 3:23PM
i just typed the question in google and this website came up http://www.digitaldisplacement.com/2006/11/29/comprehensive-ps3-power-usage-figures/
Kyle T. @ Sep 27th 2008 6:25PM
Thanks for answering my question guys! Yeah I guess I should stop simplifying my ideas of how trophies work. For some reason, since I'm not a game programmer, I feel as if trophies should be easy to implement (if x condition in stats is met, award trophy), but since i have no experience in the field I have absolutely no idea. I guess I went after MS because I'm a bit jealous of the extra play that it'll add after I'm completely finished screwing around in Fallout (which, honestly, will be many, many, MANY hours.)
duckhunt8 @ Sep 27th 2008 7:56PM
I know what you mean. I used to think the same way, but then I realized testing alone must eat up time and resources, and that devs just can't make it work.
VeganTnT @ Sep 27th 2008 6:44PM
This is in response to Abebe T.'s question about his ps3 making sound in standby mode.
Most likely your PS3 is running hotter than it should. I have my 60gb unit sitting horizontally in a normal bookshelf. This is NOT an ideal spot for it as there is little to no airflow there. I noticed the sound in Standby mode as well, after getting closer I listened closely and heard the familiar hum of an exhaust fan.
So even though your ps3 is "off" it is still aware that the temperture is too hot. So it continues running the fan to keep air circulating and keep the chipset cool.
After noticing this I took a usb fan, plugged it into the ps3, and placed it behind the unit so it sucks up the hotair and pushes it out of the bookshelf.
I no longer have the fan on during standby because my unit is now running much cooler.
Hope that helps!!
pat1202003 @ Sep 27th 2008 6:53PM
My PS3 makes a very quiet, faint noise when in standby. I just thought it was normal. I might have to get it checked out.
benny boy @ Sep 27th 2008 7:08PM
I think PS3F might have got it wrong here. My PS3 does make a quiet noise when in standby and I also have to turn it off at night to so I can go to sleep.
However, I'm thinking it might be because the wireless has to be kept on if you have 'remote play from Standby' switched on in the settings.
I'm guessing it's the same with all PS3s so I wouldn't be worried.
KUV1977 @ Sep 27th 2008 7:08PM
it has been announced that Afrika will make it to Europe in 2009, so i don't see a reason, why they shouldn't bring it to the US of A. Even if not, you can still import the UK-Version.

When will Sony have the full support to Latin America?
I think they said in this year E3 that the support was coming before the next year?....If not, when?
jakob.falthammar @ Sep 27th 2008 7:26PM
AFRIKA IS COMING TO EUROPE! At least according to this site http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-205662.aspx
Dr. Strangepork @ Sep 27th 2008 7:30PM
To the first question, don't forget that all PS3 have BC for PS1 games, its the BC with PS2 games that is up in the air.
So if you truly have "a ton" of PS1 games you should be able to play those.
As for me, I was very disappointed in BC for my PS2 games on my MGS4 80GB system. Sure, many game ran, but man more didn't or were borked so much that it wasn't worth it. If it wasn't for MGS4 and the DS3 packins, I would've been better off getting the 40GB system.
Zimon @ Sep 27th 2008 7:50PM
Actually the PS3 does make a noise when you leave it in stand-by if you have Remote Play turned on. I've noticed it too and I turned it off to keep it quiet during those folding@home nights.
Kyle T. @ Sep 27th 2008 9:53PM
If remote play is on, the PS3's cooling fan will switch on intermittently. That's probably the problem. I noticed the same thing when I had it on.
lee @ Sep 27th 2008 8:42PM
to the guy with the noise standby ps3
i think this is because you have remote start enabled
bud_toker_13 @ Sep 27th 2008 10:42PM

OK if you have your PS3 set up to auto start with remote play your wifi unit is still on inside making heat so your PS3 will still have its fan on 24 7 is you shut off auto start from remote play the fan will tern off if it don't then call Sony
toddisgod @ Sep 27th 2008 11:21PM
rock band 1 does support dual kick, you just need a splitter for the cable the kick uses; bring the kick to best buy and they'll find one for you
Fane @ Sep 29th 2008 4:53AM
This will only work if you don't rest your feet on the pedals; otherwise, there will always be a connection, or so I've heard. See youtube videos.
jpeg91 @ Sep 28th 2008 4:13AM
To the question about the noise in standby:
i had this, its a very high pitched sound coming from the ps3 whilst set to remote turn on over wifi. It doesn't seem to be the fan but the actual wifi component. iv asked some of my family and some can here it and some cant. it seem to be one of those noises some people can here and others cant.
Ves @ Sep 28th 2008 4:28AM
@benny boy. I was thinking the same thing about PS3fanboy not being completely correct on that answer.
It's all 'normal' if the fan still makes a little sound if you have remote play on. I will test it out later to see if the sound lowers/disappears when I turn off the remote play feature.
hopper @ Sep 28th 2008 4:31AM
about the noise on standby... try bringing it to a friends house and see if it dose it there because it could be your power... i use a voltage regulator for my stuff
xxn00bxx @ Sep 28th 2008 5:01AM
Like other commenters already noted, the PS3 will make some very quiet noise when Remote Start is enabled. It seems that the sleep mode of the ps3 consumes slightly more power and therefore the chipsets have to be cooled by the fan. Just try to turn the feature off.
kevin @ Sep 28th 2008 5:27AM
I have heard that you can use a normal headphone jack splitter to use two kick pedals on the RB1 drum set if you can get a hold of a second pedal from a RB drum set or if you can find an electric drum kit's kick pedal that uses a headphone jack as well, which isn't uncommon.
Fane @ Sep 29th 2008 4:55AM
see my comment above
ZeroCorpse @ Sep 28th 2008 11:35AM
I found my MGS bundle on eBay very recently for less than retail, and it's in like-new condition (software and manuals weren't even opened, and it was never registered with Sony). You mileage may vary with eBay, but there ARE deals to be found.
That being said, I kinda wish I'd paid a little extra for an older system with Emotion Engine rather than software emulation for PS2 games. I've already run into glitchy PS2 games, and I'll probably end up buying a cheap used PS2 just so I can play them properly.
I wish Sony hadn't cheaped out on the hardware BC. The software emulation is nice, but it IS limited and not a catch-all solution for those who like playing PS2 games.
