Turn your PS Eye into a working webcam
With the exception of LittleBigPlanet and The Eye of Judgment, there hasn't been much reason to dust off the Eye. Well, put it to work! Get the camera off its lazy butt and have it become a fully functional PC webcam. The NUI Group is offering detailed instructions on how to get the Eye camera to work on your PC, with easy to install drivers.

What are you talking about? I almost use my camera daily for SingStar or Buzz! The videos in SingStar are hilarious. And does no one else make stupid videos and the nsend them to your friends on the PS3s?
Dartmerc @ Sep 30th 2008 1:40AM
I sit in the background and take a swig of beer every time the camera light comes on, looks like I've been sculling the entirety of the song.
Gets boring quick, but does get you drunk.

kevin @ Sep 29th 2008 10:36PM
or on chat rooms.
or use it as a mic...
and this is ancient
fiziks @ Sep 29th 2008 11:44PM
or use it for R6V2, or for burnout paradise
LordAbsu @ Sep 29th 2008 10:38PM
Hmmmm... expanded functionality makes it seem ever so much more tempting.
This might just be the personal justification for buying it that I needed: snap home-made textures to import into LittleBigPlanet *AND* webcam chat.
AlterEgo @ Sep 29th 2008 10:39PM
I've installed it.
It doesn't allow you to use your PS Eye as a functional webcam however you like.
Yes, it DOES work in his testing program, but that's as far as it goes.
Bummer, but a step in the right direction. Hopefully, he'll get it open to the entire OS so it's recognized as a webcam instead of USB-device. :(
playcrackthesky @ Sep 29th 2008 10:51PM
So it's a no go on msn and the like?
Meh. Good effort, but I wont be downloading it, yet.
AlterEgo @ Sep 29th 2008 10:55PM
Yep, I tested it on MSN, YouTube and Yahoo Messenger, and it's a no-go.
Then I saw somewhere that the guy who created these drivers said he wasn't attempting to make it work in those applications. Just getting it to work in Windows.
Don't really know what the purpose of that would be, but if you want to stare at yourself...in 60fps, well...now you can. XD
tristan88 @ Sep 29th 2008 10:46PM
when, if i ever buy a playstation eye, i will try this out. if what AlterEgo said is true then i will simply wait until it is fully functional.

I got the last Eye of Judgment at Circuit City for $40
EOJ is a fun game and the camera with eye create is great... It's an excellent camera and I was suprised at how well the audio was.
Now using the camera for LBP and EyePet... Keeps looking better and better
Although I use my Eye Toy as my webcam

I might pick up one in a couple weeks or if I can find one for cheap online.
justin @ Sep 29th 2008 11:05PM
wow. i know a place where the EOJ is 30 bucks,, and i going to get it.. and its a plus cause i dont have a webcam on my computer..
Kspraydad @ Sep 29th 2008 11:36PM
Andrew...there are many current uses for the EYE.
iamkid @ Sep 29th 2008 11:51PM
i did this a long time ago with my eyetoy. works great, and it makes a good mic too :D
Dr. Strangepork @ Sep 30th 2008 12:23AM
I also picked up a USB extension cable. If you have a HD tv and sit ~12ft away from your tv, the eye doesn't zoom in far enough if you ask me. The quality is great, but you'll end up taking up just a portion of the screen.
And to move the camera close enough, you'll need an extension.
Wayne @ Sep 30th 2008 12:37AM
I use my PS Eye for a microphone in Warhawk, SOCOM etc etc. It's better quality then my bluetooth headset.
PistolPlatypus @ Sep 30th 2008 1:34AM
I use the eye for chat, works nice. Kind of blotchy, but I think that may be because i'm running a wireless connection.
Sinistar @ Sep 30th 2008 1:46AM
I couldn't get these drivers to work on XP64, but I'm keeping an eye on the thread until they get it working with IM programs like Skype.. Or better yet, why doesn't Sony just add Skype to the PS3 XMB, like they did with the PSP...
Christian @ Sep 30th 2008 5:42AM
In addition to the examples others have posted the eye is also fun to use in online Burnout, you even get a Trophy for it :)
elephant_stone @ Sep 30th 2008 6:30AM
I'v used my EyeToy as a web cam since my PS2 became defunct.
I know for sure there are drivers out there that work for the EyeToy
LouTreize @ Sep 30th 2008 7:40AM
For Mac users, just download the latest driver called
Macam (search it, should pop up first) and supposedly by adding the iChatUSBCam driver, it'll work in chat
application (i haven't tried it).
Enjoy!
Miles @ Sep 30th 2008 8:07AM
Linux tutorial please.
compton420 @ Sep 30th 2008 8:35AM
i use my xbox360 cam on my ps3 and it works fine
SnazzyD @ Sep 30th 2008 10:15AM
I may pick up EOJ so that I can use the camera stand for taking pics of objects, drawings, textures for use in LittleBigPlanet (with enough lighting to get a quality image).
The camera goes for $30-$35 and EOJ for not much more in some places - never hurts to have an extra camera, and the game looks reasonably fun as well...
ChaOS @ Sep 30th 2008 10:40AM
I don't know why Sony won't just release XP/Vista/Mac drivers for this thing!!!
I mean seriously, It can only helps sells if you can push it as a product that has more than one purpose!
Flushmonster @ Oct 2nd 2008 10:34PM
Can anyone tell me how to change the ps eye video quality settings on the PS3 from 320x240 (120fps) to 680x480 (60fps)
The only setting i get under Camera settings on the XMB is "50HZ or 60 HZ flickr reduction''
thanks
