So, apparently the PS3 version of
Alone in the Dark is so radically different from the 360 version, that it merits a brand new title. Eden Studios has tried its best to appease critics of the original release by taking their feedback and rolling it into this new premium PS3 edition.
Alone in the Dark: Inferno, as it will be called when it finally launches on PS3, is the definitive version of the game. Not only will it have better controls, but it will even have additional gameplay in the form of an extra chapter.
We have preview code waiting for us back in the US. Once we get our hands on it, you'll certainly find out if Eden Studios was successful. Trailer is embedded after the break. (You must be 18 or older to watch -- it's an M rated game, y'know.)

I've seen many updates of ports, they usually suck, so this one isn't going to be any different.

Any particular reason I should get this over Dead Space? Have fun with swnging chairs at windows, I'm going to go lop the limbs off of alien monstrosities with a space-buzz saw. Cheers.

Raptortim: That's only true when the original game isn't so poor that the developers would actually be hard pressed to actually make it worse (see Yahtzee's review on Zero Punctuation to see what I mean). If they manage to make it worse than the previous versions then it's going to be a whole new level of incompetence. I mean, really... they can only go up from what they're porting from.
bishop: Even considering what I've said there though, I still think Dead Space is probably going to be the better title. It looks like it has a better plot overall, and that's important. I've loved watching the Dead Space comics, and they've really shown that the people behind Dead Space can write a story. Alone in the Dark, adversely, had a pretty poor story and that's the one thing that's likely not going to change at all in the port.

The writing is good b/c the EARS team has made the effort the hire people who can come up with a good story. ;)

kentucky: No kidding, they have some real pedigree in there. Even Warren Ellis did some of the early plot brainstorming for them. And that's the best time to have Warren Ellis working on something, because the man's an absolutely fantastic idea-man, but not so great on fleshing them out. I'm glad they left that to someone else, and in doing so it was just one of the factors that helped them create a fantastic plot.
I tend to go on and on about how people could learn from the way the Dead Space devs put their plot together, but that's only because it's true. When one looks at videogames, unless one is looking at RPGs (such as Mask of the Betrayer, which I loved dearly) one can't exactly expect even a half-decent plot. But these guys did it right, this is leading up to be the best horror story I've seen in a long while.

Hasn't the ps3fanboy already previewed the Alone in the Dark port and declared that it was awful?
I have to respect the fact though, that Eden Studios is making the effort to at least make something that's different from the Xbox360 version. It seems like most of the time, the developers aren't making the effort b/c they either don't want to, or there's the subtle suggestion that they're being paid to keep the versions exactly the same. Who knows?

ah.. the Golden Compass of horror games..
Why wasn't all these problems picked up in games testing..? or are Atari doing so badly they can't afford them..? now using money they 'fraudulently' got off 360 gamers (and Wii) to 'polish a turd'..
Dead Space is the interesting one (although by EA), hopefully it's a good game, well it can't be worse than AitD can it.
The_Icon @ Oct 11th 2008 4:08PM
Sorry, but i have Dead Space to look forward to.
