WipEout HD has now been patched in order to fix the common game freezing problem among PSN users with over 50 friends. Currently this patch is available for the European version only, though we would expect it to go live in America very soon. The patch notes, which can be retrieved from within the game, state that your save file needs to be deleted after the patch has been installed for the fix to take affect. This means your lap times, team loyalties and other single-player stats and options will be lost.
Your trophies and leaderboard scores, however,
won't be lost. If you've been sidestepping the issue by playing whilst signed out of the PSN, starting again is no doubt quite an annoyance. Don't get too upset, though, at least you can now play online with your friends. That's worth starting the campaign mode all over again, right?
[Thanks Stoo]

WTF @ this patch. I hope it's not compulsory.
KarlW @ Oct 10th 2008 12:35PM
Yea, seriously. I've spent ages playing campaign mode, I don't want to lose it all.
I don't really use the friends list anyway. Only a handful of people I know have ps3s.
KarlW @ Oct 10th 2008 12:39PM
OK I have some information now.
When you start the game, it will prompt you to update. Press O to skip it. This will sign you out of the PSN, and you will not be able to play online at all.
In other words, you can refuse the update, but if you do, you can only play offline.

I had no idea about the save file thing, and luckily it has done nothing for me. I didn't have the problem before hand but I can still play the game with my pre-patch save file.

READ, dear people.
“The patch notes, which can be retrieved from within the game, state that your save file needs to be deleted after the patch has been installed for the fix to take affect.”
In other words, you can patch without worrying for your save status. If you want the fix to work you have to MANUALLY delete your save game. If you don’t, you keep your progress, but the crashing issue if you have more than 50 friends will remain until you delete it.
brampf @ Oct 10th 2008 12:35PM
You only need to delete your save if you have had over 50 friends while playing the game at one point.
If you had fewer than 50 friends its ok.
koehler83 @ Oct 10th 2008 12:37PM
Why wouldnt copying your save file to portable media, deleting it, patching the game and reinstalling the save file work?
Whoppy @ Oct 10th 2008 12:37PM
Downloaded it but I haven't deleted my save since I had no problems :)
Stoo @ Oct 10th 2008 12:46PM
Hmm. I sent this news in and I copied the patch notes but they seem to have been misinterpreted.
Here they are.
"If at any time you have had over 50 users in your friends list whilst playing WipEout HD, it is possible that your saved data has become corrupted.
If this situation applies to you, we strongly recommend that once this update has installed you quit the game and delete your saved data using the saved data utility in the XMB, then re-launch the game to create a new profile."
Laurens Holst @ Oct 10th 2008 3:08PM
Ah, Stoo, thanks for that clarification.
So as long as you haven’t had 50 friends on your friends list whilst playing Wipeout, you don’t need to delete your save file. The fix will still be in effect in case your friends list gets bigger than 50 in the future.
Miles @ Oct 10th 2008 3:56PM
My bad. This makes everything clear now - and actually the patch is fine, then :)
Archon @ Oct 10th 2008 12:45PM
People! LEARN TO READ, OK? YOU DON'T HAVE TO DELETE ANYTHING. You download the update without a problem. It doesn't delete anything.
BUT >if< you experience freezing, you have to delete your save file for the patch to fix that problem.
How old are you people, 3?
koehler83 @ Oct 10th 2008 2:00PM
The article is for people experiencing freezing in the game, O Brilliant Oracle.
Archon @ Oct 10th 2008 2:09PM
But people ask:
"Iz da update mandatory" as if it would delete their savegames which means they don't get what they read.
maxpontiac @ Oct 10th 2008 1:54PM
Are you kidding me?
Delete the game save or delete friends off your list??
Somebody needs to get a clue.
Archon @ Oct 10th 2008 2:10PM
And neither can you. I stole your wallet.
Archon @ Oct 10th 2008 2:10PM
Love the reply system...
jimb0c @ Oct 10th 2008 2:34PM
The notes say you "possibly" need to create a new profile, not you have to. And people who have used the same profile have had no problem so far. It's just a precaution that SOME save files may be corrupt.
razlebol @ Oct 10th 2008 3:36PM
unacceptable ...
mutleymcladd @ Oct 10th 2008 3:44PM
downloaded, bikes are very nice. Feel totally different.
Pitty there are no actual races though !
Not looked at the day/night cycle yet could be interesting.
Any news on the trophies yet ?
fiziks @ Oct 10th 2008 5:44PM
this is becoming ridiculous
Ty @ Oct 12th 2008 2:03PM
50 friends... Too many. Waste of valuable resource if they start to all message you. And that won't happen. And we all know you won't message them. CUT.
