PS3 peripheral charging AC adapter announced
Those of you with only two USB ports can now rejoice -- Sony is releasing the above AC Adapter for the Japanese market on December 18th for 2,800 yen (about $28 USD). This peripheral will allow you to charge your DualShock 3/SIXAXIS controllers or any other accessories independent of your PS3, thereby freeing up those precious USB ports. The wireless keypad will also debut in Japan on the same day for 5,500 yen (about $55 USD). Keep in mind prices in Japan tend to be higher, so when these products debut in the US, they will likely retail for less.

Hey Sony, I have a better idea. How about you leave the usb ports "hot" so I can just plug the controller in when the unit is in standby mode.
Erwos @ Oct 10th 2008 12:23PM
So true. Make it configurable in the XMB, even default it to off, but I'd love for them to stay on.
mikael @ Oct 10th 2008 12:39PM
Do the controllers only charge when the ps3 is on?!
If so, I have absolutely amazing batteries in mine. They last for months.
Popfrogs @ Oct 10th 2008 2:56PM
Someone said before if you set the PS3 for Remote Play then wake on remote, it's supposed to leave the ports powered up. Can anyone verify this?
Ashmen @ Oct 10th 2008 9:05PM
No, it doesn't. I set mine for remote play, plugged in my bluetooth headset, and it didn't light up like it does in the powered hub.

Very stupid if you need USB ports just get a freakin USB Port HUB
Jerses @ Oct 10th 2008 12:34PM
agree. or buy a usb charger (10 dlls or less) and conect a USB hub if you want to charge more things...
Professor Lario @ Oct 10th 2008 11:12AM
I guess an interesting deal, but I just use the usb ports on my PC and laptop to charge the controllers.
koehler83 @ Oct 10th 2008 11:25AM
I used to do the same, however since upgrading to DS3s, it no longer seems to work. Its quick bullshit and I don't understand it. Before pairing the controllers to the system, I was quite capable of charging them on a PC but since.. no dice. I don't get it. I cant charge them on anything but my PS3 now and ONLY with the controllers ON
WTF?!
Robert @ Oct 10th 2008 11:29AM
Yeah me to, works just fine
ck @ Oct 10th 2008 5:47PM
I have no problems charging DS3s on my laptop, but I usually plug them into the 360 to charge as it has hot ports.
Glericus @ Oct 10th 2008 4:37PM
D - that is not the point you know, you cant use that as a usb port, you just charge stuff in it.
devilmaker @ Oct 10th 2008 5:32PM
I use one... my PS3 has 7 ports because of it (1 being taken up because IT is connected to the PS3.
Glericus @ Oct 11th 2008 10:36AM
yes I know a usb hub works in a PS3 but that is not the point with the charger. It only charge stuff. You dont connect it to the PS3
WhiteSpy @ Oct 10th 2008 11:17AM
This is a rather uninspired offering. I got the Pelican PS3 Charging station and it has two cradles for controllers, red/green charging lights, and 2 USB ports for other accessories. Oh yeah, and it looks nice sitting in my entertainment system without the mess of cables tangled all over everything.

devilmaker @ Oct 10th 2008 5:15PM
Wow, that thing looks so great. I have a 60Gb anyway, but I'll certainly consider getting it if I get some DS3 controllers.
davebo @ Oct 10th 2008 12:13PM
So this isn't a powered usb hub for controllers, it's just an a/c adapter with two usb ports? Who doesn't have any other device with a usb port to power this? And for 2,800 yen? Are USB ports rare in Japan?
ajiezer @ Oct 10th 2008 12:38PM
I do dig this because the power consumption of my pc or my ps3 will be always higher that this device
Dahk @ Oct 10th 2008 12:39PM
My BlackBerry charger works fine thank you.
Dahk @ Oct 10th 2008 12:40PM
Although I must admit, Playstation Branded things are getting quite good looking. Like check out that PS Headset! I might just get one for kicks even though I have a headset.
*gets phone call* What's that? The DOW plummeted again?!
... scratch that thought.
ChocoDK @ Oct 10th 2008 5:15PM
Well I got two power bars right now that are basically full where my PS3 is. Also I got only two USB ports for my PS3 but I got a USB hub thing which has seven USB slots in it. This is a good idea although there is probably cheaper solutions to the issue.
Grenadyr @ Oct 11th 2008 7:18AM
Fwiw I just hook mine to the usb port on the front of my cable box...
d @ Oct 13th 2008 8:49AM
why not just plug it into a laptop or a desktop. hell apple sells a wall plug for a bout $20 that a usb plugs into. why not use that? I KNOW THESE OPTIONS WILL BE CHEAPER
