PSP Fanboy hands-on: Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep

Birth by Sleep was indeed playable on the show floor at TGS and we sunk in some time with the title. The playable build that was available let us try out both Ventus and Tera in battle. We decided to just go with trying out Tera's abilities and then go straight into the action. Tera's level starts off in a forest area which gets you into a fight right away. Kingdom Hearts vets will notice that the controls are incredibly familiar; they're nearly identical to the original console games from the past, though with slight differences due to the change in input interface (ie, shoulder buttons once again control the camera since there are no dual analog nubs).

It's strange, I did enjoy playing both PS2 KH games in the past very much, but Birth by Sleep was by far an uneventful experience. It did, incidentally, make me want to ... sleep. Tera's area focused on a forced battle after forced battle which was getting tedious, not because of the quantity of the fights but because the system just wasn't any fun. After passing that area, I was taken to another place called the Enchanted Dominion which is apparently Sleeping Beauty's castle. We arrived on a really long bridge and had to make our way towards the castle. There were more battles, with typical heartless enemies: fliers, ground troops and those big fat guys you can only hurt from behind (though in BbS, the damage was apparently not penalized). Luckily, I decided to just rush pass these guys and head into the castle.
Once inside, I was greeted by a boss fight with a giant red spindle heartless which is obviously in line with the Sleeping Beauty mythos. As the boss fight went on, I noticed that the timed input events first introduced in KH2 are back. This is good as it adds a little more oomph to the otherwise tedious affair. Speaking of KH2 innovations or, in some cases, annoyances, bosses can't be defeated without using a finishing attack.
While there was still another half of the game to explore, we moved on elsewhere and left Ventus' half for another day. We did give it a quick peek though, noting that it takes place on Cinderella's world which is dubbed "Castle of Dreams." There wasn't any showing for the third playable character though there's always time for that next year as the game won't be out in Japan until sometime in 2009.

I'm really not looking forward to this game, it just doesn't seem very good.
Who here is looking forward to this over Dissidia or vice versa? I can't wait for Dissidia........
My opinion.
Gurbinder @ Oct 10th 2008 4:12PM
I agree.
Disney does not work with anime. If they took out disney i might look into it. Otherwise no. You cant make disney characters serious.
Then again disney does not go well with anything cept disney land. Which i hate too. Dam you Walt Disney.
Gurbinder @ Oct 10th 2008 4:12PM
oh and as a side comment im looking forward to gundam vs gundam the most and dissidia final fantasy second.
strike @ Oct 10th 2008 11:58PM
cool, cool. i don't like many disney chaacters, although Jafar really kicks ass lol
aj @ Oct 11th 2008 11:19AM
I just can't get into RPGs that are based on a pre-existing universe. Half of the fun of a story is learning about the world and the people in it.
crazypenguin @ Oct 10th 2008 12:14PM
why would you write such a dissapointing hands on? this is probobly the most looked forward game for the psp on my list, that may actually get me to get a psp brite....
Nate @ Oct 10th 2008 12:23PM
It's called reporting. They reported what they saw. Just because it's not what we were hoping for, doesn't mean it shouldn't be reported.
crazypenguin @ Oct 10th 2008 12:24PM
ik, i just really didn't want this to be true :(
Autobon @ Oct 10th 2008 12:36PM
Keep in mind this is one persons opinion. The game could very well be really fun for you.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 10th 2008 2:03PM
Exactly. One person does not control your opinions. Maybe Majed is tired as hell from reporting night and day and he was stressed out and when he played the game at a public games convention he was distracted, annoyed, or anything else. I'm not trying to find an excuse for his somewhat negative preview, and maybe BBS is just a sub-par experience, but all I'm saying is that I've loved one game one night and the next night all I wanted to do was sleep but I wanted to play that game and I didn't enjoy it that much.
R. Melo-Franco @ Oct 10th 2008 2:11PM
What's more, it isn't the full game. I bet it will be very fine. Nothing compared to Dissidia, but it will be certainly a neat game indeed.
cafecito @ Oct 10th 2008 3:08PM
I'm still looking forward to the game. KH's combat has never been truly complex, so no shocker there. I just enjoy this games for their stories and character interaction.
SImpression @ Oct 10th 2008 5:02PM
Terra not Tera.
Unbirths not Heartless.
Ben @ Oct 10th 2008 6:13PM
Is it me, or do those breast-straps look incredibly uncomfortable.
cafecito @ Oct 10th 2008 9:18PM
Yeah indeed... and she's hawt ^_^
Ricky @ Oct 10th 2008 7:19PM
Only one person so far has hinted on why this version of the game might not be up to par as of yet.
Think about it... the game is most likely no where near done! In other words, there are still probably many things that SE needs to work out. Aspects of the game like camera angles, frame rates, battle systems, and controls most likely still need a lot of work. This kind of thing happens with most big games that aren't yet in their complete form, but are available to play at some big video game show/expo! It's an incomplete/beta (or whatever you want to call it) version of the game. The end result is what matters. And the end result will no doubt be a lot better than what we've recently seen! That's just a fact of life when dealing with video games, end of story!
SecretAgentHam @ Oct 10th 2008 8:59PM
i will take this game thank you...
Colinohyeah17 @ Oct 10th 2008 10:52PM
Wait is the battle system card based or not? I keep hearing it is and it's confusing me because it looks like a new regular KH game... And this will probably make me buy a PSP
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Oct 10th 2008 11:07PM
i think the new DS KH may be card based but i dont think this one is. it seems to parallel the style of the PS2 games, which is great cause i cant stand card based RPG's.
Colinohyeah17 @ Oct 10th 2008 11:14PM
Yeah, I'm just so confused they said DS one was normal and this was card based. I hope both are normal because I don't think too many people cared about the whole card battle thing...
Dreadhead541 @ Oct 11th 2008 1:51AM
neither games are card based. People are getting confused because BBS uses a "deck" sort of system for the special attacks on the command menu. The gameplay is still very similar to the ps2 KH games, but now as well as attacking normally like in KH1 and KH2, you can select special attacks to use on the fly off of the command menu
Sora @ Oct 11th 2008 9:00PM
From what I've heard, they were planning on making this card based but decided on the current form (It deviates a little from the PS2 games' combat, but it's close enough). As for the DS version, I think it's like the PS2 games, but I could be wrong.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Oct 10th 2008 11:10PM
ouch. that kind of hurts. i was really looking forward to this as the title that made me pick up my PSP again but from your hands-on, it seems like it may disappoint me like Crisis Core did. Crisis Core was just so boring to me and this one is apparently the same way.
im not going to write it off though until i actually try it, but i doubt ill be giddy over it anymore though.
leonus11 @ Oct 11th 2008 1:13AM
i'm just hoping this game doesn't use the crisis core battle system. i hated that battle system and it sucked (IMO of course)! still the story should keep me interested.
Dreadhead541 @ Oct 11th 2008 1:35AM
compared to the other hands-on's, yours seems like it was pretty shallow. You didn't even mention the new gameplay features such as the shot-lock system, fatal mode or the most important one of all, the command menu which allows you to fully customize a list of special attacks. It seems to me like you just played it like you thought previous KH games should, and didn't try to experience any of the new improvements.
And for all the people asking, NONE of the new kingdom hearts games are going to be card based, the "deck" is referring to the list of special attacks that you can add to your command list. The game will still play much like the ps2 games.
Dreadhead541 @ Oct 11th 2008 2:04AM
some gameplay from TGS has been leaked, you should be able to judge for yourselves whether you think it looks better or worse than the other games.

wocyob @ Oct 11th 2008 5:36AM
hmm the dude in the middle got a new name?.... wasnt his name roxas? im soo confused
TJF588 @ Oct 11th 2008 8:50AM
Roxas was created (in-universe) during the first KH. BbS takes place before the first game. Whatever the connection between Ven/Ventus and Roxas is, we'll find out somewhere among these three new titles (if you wanna consider coded especially new).
-Jad- @ Oct 11th 2008 8:28AM
Great... I'm looking forward for this game as a KH fan.
Psalm Bowser @ Oct 11th 2008 8:51AM
But the DS version sucks as well.
TJF588 @ Oct 11th 2008 12:51PM
Hm, "Tera". Guess that eliminates any possible mistaking with FFVI's "Terra", and upholds a now-tradition of similarly-named characters having their double-letter removed (Rikku -> Riku). This does, alas, assure me that Tina will again be Terra whenever SE makes a FFIV(DS)-level remake for FFVI. Ah well, I guess I can live with it.
ANYWAY, multiple characters, eh? Still totally siding with Org member XIV being Aqua's Nobody.
Sora @ Oct 11th 2008 9:04PM
It's actually Terra, it's spelled wrong in the hands-on.
Yuel @ Oct 12th 2008 6:55AM
Well, this game looks great, i gonna buy it for sure. I think the correct name is Tera because you can't say Terra in japanese, so it sounds logical, maybe the traduction to english is Terra but the original name is Tera
Kresnik @ Oct 12th 2008 10:29PM
So, after robe frenzy in KH2, now they're going for bondage? lol
So after Heartless, Nobody, now Unbirth? How can you fight something yet to be exist? At least the first two is much more reasonable terms, but I think they're going too far this time.
It seem that KH series will be stretched out like what they did to FF, just it's getting duller with each new series.
Nezrou @ Oct 13th 2008 5:15AM
Even if battles will be tedious I still will be getting it, considering that psp doesn't have too many good rpgs that aren't a port from ps.
TM @ Oct 13th 2008 10:27AM
I never could figure out the connection between disney and this....does disney own the KH license?
rob @ Oct 14th 2008 1:28AM
Weird. 1up said that this is the best kingdom hearts yet during their podcast.
TechG33k @ Oct 16th 2008 12:35PM
LOL Ben's right; those things MUST be uncomfortable. And it is "Tera", but our American ways of changin' everything made it "Terra". And I dont think Disney owns KH, but who's "Jupiter"? They're always on the cases, but I never heard of 'em.
Darth_Xehanort @ Oct 24th 2008 12:17AM
I'be played this game, and it is WAY better than ANY other PSP game. This beats Crisis Core. This beats Patapon. This beats Chains of Olympus. This beats any PSP game that you can name. It's AMAZING!
