Shuhei Yoshida wants both the PS3 and Xbox 360 to succeed in Japan
In an interview with Eurogamer, Sony's president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said he'd like to see both the PS3 and Xbox 360 succeed in Japan. "I'd really like to see both PS3 and 360 succeed here ... What Microsoft is offering and what we are offering are closer, compared to what other platforms are offering. Because of that commonality, the new games coming out on 360 and PS3 help to get consumers more interested in this generation of gaming." These statements might sound shocking to the typical fanboy, but with the Nintendo Wii trumping the combined sales of the PS3 and 360 week after week, Yoshida might be onto something here.
Yoshida even praises the new Xbox Experience, set to launch November 19th. Some see the Xbox Experience as a rival to Sony's own Home service. "I think it's quite nice. I like the avatar designs they're working on. Personally, Microsoft's work is closer to my personal preference. The Miis are very nice, but everybody looks cute, like Japanese-style characters."
Do you guys think Yoshida's logic is sound? Will interest in the 360 or the PS3 lead to a higher interest in high-def gaming in general? Or do you think consumers are generally happy to choose one over the other? Or are they already satisfied with their Wiis? For the full interview, head over to Eurogamer.

Sounds logical to me in terms of advancing the technology behind high-def gaming as a whole.
But I still see typical consumers having a preference for one console over the other based on the types of games they tend to play. Fanboys, on the other hand, will always be fanboys and remain loyal to their brand.
vahdyx @ Oct 10th 2008 4:46PM
Personally, I think this generation is fucked up! There have been so many changes in hardware it's not even funny!
I think them both succeeding is important. I hope the ps3 just is on top at the end
SuperGayParade @ Oct 10th 2008 4:56PM
It's smart. HD adoption isn't going as fast as they'd like. If 360 and PS3 get hyped up by multiplatform games, when the bajillion PS2 owners go to buy their next gen console, they'll side with PS3 more likely.
Gilson Cortes @ Oct 10th 2008 4:58PM
I mean, it would be nice to see everyone succeed. But we all know that deep down inside, we wanna see the other console struggle... or at least I do ^_^
ChocoDK @ Oct 10th 2008 5:05PM
I can see where he is coming from since the Wii realsiticly is creaming both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Heck I saw a women today on the subway who must've been in her 50s playing a Nintendo DS.
I like both the 360 and Playstation 3 although of course I prefer one over the other. They both though have their own strengths and weaknesses and think it was nice of him to praise the Xbox 360.
devilmaker @ Oct 10th 2008 5:10PM
Come on 360 fanboys, lets all shake hands, have a truce... AND TAKE DOWN THAT Wii!!!
:)
Wayne @ Oct 10th 2008 5:33PM
Count me in!
CJLopez @ Oct 10th 2008 6:16PM
Good thing the Wii has his DS's to back him up, xDDDDDD
/sarcasm
ExMcCloud @ Oct 10th 2008 8:36PM
So I guess I don't need to buy a Wii......Well I already own both systems BUT I shall shake hands with the SDF
Hashbrown Hunter @ Oct 10th 2008 5:15PM
You know, I actually really like Yoshida. He is a very interesting person and has a very non-biased look at Sony and its competitors. He tells it like it is, and for that I respect him a lot more than Reggie.
dmd @ Oct 10th 2008 5:20PM
So... was he drunk or something?
Vincent @ Oct 10th 2008 5:22PM
Someone fire that douchebag. You just can't play the nice sportsman in this playfield. When you say their service is nice, you are making those who are on the fence but haven't decided for one reason or another, to have an even harder time deciding and potentially choose the other side (specially when the other side heavily promotes their strong points and downplays yours', like MS have been doing)
Vincent @ Oct 10th 2008 5:23PM
By the way, I do like the 360, I just don't think this is the way an important Sony figure should behave (if he is trying to make money that is)
Chase @ Oct 11th 2008 12:50PM
Oh please.
GGCAN @ Oct 10th 2008 5:24PM
Sure...they both need the other to compete...if we had only one console, there wouldn't need to be that race (Competion) to get things out there.
Josh @ Oct 10th 2008 5:50PM
I think he's onto something. Besides, in every console generation, as cost becomes less of an issue more people end up buying both systems. Each one has it's own strengths and weaknesses, and if sony could bring cost down a little more and hold some exclusives, I could see a large portion of the gaming industry eventually owning both consoles. I know many xbox owners are also ps2 owners, so I'm sure once you get past the fan boys, most would own both consoles if it was economically sound to do so at this time. And Yoshida is spot on, the success of either drives the costs down for everyone and creates a bigger playing field
Jeff Brown @ Oct 10th 2008 5:32PM
I think it's logical. I mean both microsoft and Sony want to be on top, but right now Nintendo is just dominating everywhere. I think having the 2 high-def systems being in an indirect alliance isn't really a bad thing. But I do want the PS3 to be the number 1 console at the end. Mainly because i think after everything that has happened with it, I think it deserves more peoples respect.
Jerses @ Oct 10th 2008 5:35PM
Its all about the MONEY!!!!!

Spartans and Helghast unite to kill Mario!
I like it.
exetermako @ Oct 10th 2008 9:06PM
Holy crap - a down-to-earth, honest, and sensible Sony spokesperson. I like this guy more and more by the day.
No offense to Phil Harrison, who was great, but occasionally towing the company line gets annoying for us gamers who want pure truth, not 3/4 truth.
Tom @ Oct 10th 2008 6:38PM
I could not agree more. This generation has had way too much fanboy nonsense. 360 and PS3 gamers have always failed to realize that they are two sides of the same coin. If Sony and Microsoft dominate this generation that makes the following things guaranteed to carry over from this gen to the next: HD Graphics, Actual controllers, complex and creative games, high quality stories and dialog, this is absolutely crucial for me to continue gaming. I have been playing for 20 years and have loved to watch the technology advance to where it is today, so much so that I could not bare to have the industry be shot back to the stone age with low tech nonsense like the Wii. Now I don't hate Nintendo, but right now I am not pleased with them at all, the Wii is threatening to make games someting I don't want to play anymore, all the shovelware, board games, and basically anything involving pets or fitness with added waggle controls. I plead with everyone, 360 fans take the jar off your head, PS3 elite take off the hate goggles and realize that if Nintendo wins this we are all going to waving our arms at a 480i 4:3 TV with N64 graphics. We need to force Nintendo to return to the way things were last gen, or watch as gaming is mutilated into a mix of milton bradley and geriatric self help tapes.
Mr Khan @ Oct 10th 2008 6:49PM
That was a joke, right?
glen @ Oct 10th 2008 6:38PM
hopefully the wii dies...
both 360 and ps3 are good....
its really down to the games now..
if both platforms are affordable prices i would have both..
the low price of the 360 swung it for me now, but if the ps3 becomes alot cheaper in the near future i would love 2 consoles
Steve @ Oct 10th 2008 9:06PM
Microsoft and Sony are taking losses on their respective consoles trying to cram the most technology they possibly can into their boxes in order to provide the "best" console. Meanwhile Nintendo takes some crap last gen hardware and throws a gimmick on top of it and all the casual gamers go crazy.
I would like both Sony and MS to do well so that our next gen consoles don't go the same way Nintendo did with the Wii. Then we will all get moderately better consoles with crappy six axis functionality or some other poo.
Doug @ Oct 10th 2008 6:53PM
At the end of the day success of either console will breed success of the other console. It costs so much money to produce games these days, and so little (relatively speaking) to port them between similar systems that it doesn't make a lot of sense for a developer to only release for one vs the other. If game does well on the 360, it will probably do well on the PS3 as well, and vice versa. But if the only console to really succeed is the Wii, there isn't much incentive for developers to create games for either of the truly HD systems out there. And if there aren't any games, why would people buy them?
Jacksons @ Oct 10th 2008 9:39PM
Wow, you take your console fanaticism seriously. That's a bit harsh, don't you think?
robb @ Oct 11th 2008 1:25AM
Do I smell a microsoft and sony merge???? maybe thats what the plan is to beat nintendo out of the water.
iamkid @ Oct 11th 2008 11:15AM
if this would happen, we can safely say that fanboys around the world would explode. personally i think it would be pretty cool though.
themizarkshow @ Oct 11th 2008 9:08PM
It just makes sense when you think about it. The Wii has graphics that rival the PS2 rather than the PS3 and its kicking ass across the world. Sure, it is fun... but it isn't a gaming platform like the 360 and PS3.
I think Yoshida is looking not only at the rest of the PS3's lifespan, but what this generations outcome could mean for the PS4, high def, and beyond.
HiddenEmerald @ Oct 11th 2008 9:08PM
Sony and Misrosoft will never merge.
I am hardcore. No doubt. Unless you think playing videogames all day everyday, whoopin ass and takin names online, is casual. If that latter is true, i dont even want to know what you do.
And I don't know why everyone always bashes the Wii. Sure, retard thrird party publishers are making shovelware, but there are a ton of good games for it. Mario, Zelda, Wario, Tales of Symphonia (the second), and a lot more (i g2g in five min so I dont hav time to type em up). you guys are just a little blind cause its winning.
That being said, I do have a PS3 and will soon get a XBOX360. They have some good games availiable and comin that look cool. I don't see them as better. I don't compare them, I just get em all for all the games.
BSprague @ Oct 11th 2008 4:01PM
That's very noble of him. But aren't the Miis on the Wii, and not the 360? Aren't they called something else?
Ty @ Oct 12th 2008 1:52AM
I understand this is what he wants, but he's not adressing inherent problems in the minds of the masses of gamers. They think that High Definition gaming only looks better on a technical or sometimes complex level. They aren't far off.
Today's next generation games don't do anything special besides look good. Generic FPS Iteration X for example is the same as iteration X-1 and X-2 with slight gameplay tweaks and the occasional new feature (notice singular). In the end, the player is playing the game. Sure they're looking at it, but they're really there to play. Those who aren't playing can watch but they're not the ones who are buying the game.
Gameplay is NOT more important than visuals. Sound, visuals, and gameplay are all equally important for conveying the same media experience only video games can really portray. All of that processing power is being thrown out the window on graphics when it can be used to add a level of complexity to once simple video games.
So why are they playing the Wii? Well everyone of the industry leaders is spewing bulls***. Nintendo Wii was the cheapest, and had a gimmick so that customers could prove to others that they were next generation too. Also Nintendo is a far greater family name than Sony or Microsoft. So, when they make something new, everyone looks.
So who's to blame for todays visually weighted video games? The media and the industry leaders. To hear Yoshida saying all of this is kind of 'self contradictory' since he's on the side of the industry thats watching factory fps churned out after factory fps.
The PS3 should be swimming in MGS4's and FFVXIII's instead its drowning in Haze's and COD4s and Quantum Theories. Same for the Xbox side... but to a lesser extent because they don't really have any innovative exclusives... (this is coming from someone who only has a PS3 and a PC as current gaming platforms... but thats enough).
SpeedRacer55 @ Oct 11th 2008 10:23PM
Well if you look at the hardware of both from a technical background both have an IBM PPC at their core with and NVidia graphics processor to work with. Although from a purely tech side the PS3 hardware is at least 2.5 times better because it has more cores to work with meaning more memory since each core has 256k and 8x256=2mb of onboard cache besides the 256mb of highspeed system memory and the 256mb of graphics memory to work with.
But for developers it is easier to make multi-platform games since the basic core computer chips are PPC's. The only difference is that type of extra cores and the type of processor.
So making that comment is not surprising at all.

i work at an electronics store and i sell these consoles. i prefer the ps3 to anything out there and i always will because of what it does and its power under the hood. i am a diehard ps3 fan but do to the fact that i would lose my job if i refused information or a sale on the other consoles i sell them. but every time i do i feel really bad. i hate the 360 with a passion and i hate everything it stands for. halo is a piece of junk it was the WORST shooter i have ever sadly played yet i see kids come in and buy it all the time and they say how great the game is and when i present some counter points they seem almost put down :). gears is nothing special either and to say it is like resistance is kinda stupid to do (one is a fps the other is a third person there for you cannot compare to begin with IMO) also i see so many 360's come back broken. i feel bad for those people that walked out the door happy only to find that they bought a lemon in most cases. then they come into the store for help and are very upset when they find out we cannot do much for them and they have to deal with MS. most people do not like the fact either that they have to pay extra to do most things that the ps3 can do out of the box (i.e. wireless online access) sure 360 has a bigger game line up but most are the same stuff you have played before or they are games that you can get on both 360 and ps3 or they are just junk games. and people praise the online for 360 but i point out i like to play online for free and do basically the same things... like kill n00bs. as for people that buy the consoles most people with the cash will buy a ps3 and those people have the HD tv and want the bluray player plus they love all the other stuff you can do for the price tag. also there is kids that come in and mention that if they had the money they would get a ps3 but they walk out of the door with a 360 when they could save for a few more pay checks and get the ps3.
anyway as for the wii i like what they have done with the motion controls but i hate the fact that they have yet to have a solid line up of games to use those controls. more then half of the wii line up is just junk and the games that are great, sorry ok, are not using the controls they way they should be. the best two games for the wii i have played are wii sports and the godfather game(wow i said wii sports was a good game). all the others like mario galaxy are good games but the lack of use of the controls was upsetting. most people i see come in to by a wii i barely never see again and if i do they are buying more junk games or getting a better console.(or the wii fit) and i never see any kids excited for wii titles which is sad to not have any titles to look forward to. like gears 2... i mean gears 1.5 or resistance 2 and killzone 2 or even a game like littlebigplanet and dc universe online. the wii is what it is which is a gimmick most people (that i see) that get a wii and are under the age of 20-25 grow bored of their wii and want more.
as for the ps3, i can say a million great things about it. the bluray play back the free online... the list goes on and with all this stuff built in it made the choice easy for me. the bluray disks are amazing in the fact that they have so much space on them thus making games far longer and far more rich in both story and game play. its just sad to see it go to waste when they make a game multiplatform or make the 360 the lead platform. and i will agree that game play has taken the back seat to the look of the game in both the 360 and ps3's case. Pixel junk eden is a good example that it didn't look all that pretty, but still pretty cool, but it was really fun to play and i played it over and over and never got mad at it once.
i would really like to see ps3 pull out ahead and win this gen but i would hate it if wii finished ahead cause then games would be moving back in time and not forward in a sense. and to go on what Ty said ps3 should be swimming in games like MGS4 and FFVXIII and hopefully games like littlebigplanet and pixel junk will start the movement towards better game play and less master chief.
anyway thats my 2 cents and i think he was kinda wrong in saying what he said. ps3 for the win.
