TGS 08: White Knight Chronicles impressions
White Knight Chronicles has changed a lot since we played it at Tokyo Game Show last year. Our conclusion at the time was that the game would be a gorgeous JRPG with an intriguing, customizable battle system; an exciting prospect for RPG-starved PS3 owners to be sure. However, after today's White Knight Chronicles presentation, we're sure the game has the potential to be much more than that.
A Level-5 employee introduced us to the game's story: It follows a boy and his search for a kidnapped princess slash love interest after discovering a conveniently hidden set of magic armor ... a tad clichéd (even by Japanese standards). In order to demonstrate the game's sense of enormity and scale we were shown a few concept pieces for the game. While rolling plains and towering castles are par for the course when it comes to JRPGs, it's been a while since we've seen an entire town straddled atop an enormous creature.
We covered the battle system quite extensively at TGS last year. We took the opportunity to space out a little while the developers explained how to link character abilities together into combos, using the palette menu and how Leonard can transform into the eponymous White Knight. Not that we were bored -- the battle system was the only thing that really set White Knight Chronicles apart. Until it was revealed that the game would have a four-player online mode, that is.
When online play was announced we assumed it would be a tacked-on extra, a back-of-the-box value add, but the rest of today's presentation centered around this aspect of the game. Even though White Knight Chronicles' Japanese release date is December 25th 2008 – only two and a half months from now – Level-5 wasn't keen on sharing many details of the online mode. Instead, we were given an overview of the feature, which was enough to illustrate that this is more than just an "extra."
16-player in-game lobbies will allow you to team up with up to three other White Knight Chronicles players and participate in instanced quests. Level-5 would not say exactly what form these would take, but they did show a cooperative, arena-style battle against a large monster. Each player's character will look unique, thanks to a deep "Avatar" character customization editor, used in the later parts of the single-player game in order to generate some of Leonard's party members.
Leveling up gives you points with which to buy more skills from a wide variety of different types, allowing you to further customize your character with an individual skill set. These skills – along with your money, items and experience level – will all transfer from the offline game to the online mode. Thanks to an in-game invitation system, you can be called upon at any time, even while in single player. Accepting the invitation saves your data and brings you straight into the online party.

From there you can emote and text chat to your heart's content. You can also check out your party's skills and suggest combo improvements. Is it your buddy's birthday? Head on over to the store and let them pick out a new weapon. Once all that's done and you've assembled an elite team of monster hunters, you can head into the adventure (whatever form they may take). Level-5 were also sure to mention that "further new elements that connect the story and MO elements are to be introduced." (Well, we'd hope so!)
Level-5 seemed content to have only scratched the surface of White Knight Chronicles' online mode, revealing the outline of a feature that, if executed properly, could almost be an entire game in its own right. (Think bundling MGO with Metal Gear Solid 4 ... except without the whole Konami ID debacle.)
A post-presentation Q&A session revealed little more: Level-5 was unable to confirm whether the game would be region locked and was unable to talk about the number, or type, of online modes. All that could be said was that there would be a "huge number" of online modes/levels (oh, is that all?). Sadly, Level-5 has also not yet decided whether to include voice chat in the game. Level-5, here's a hint: are you serious? Do it.
Considering the nation's apparent disinterest in online play, it's interesting that a Japanese developer is one of the first to make such a progressive move in the RPG genre, fusing a single-player RPG with MMO-esque elements. From the sounds of it, this could prolong White Knight Chronicle's life in the same way that multiplayer has prolonged Call Of Duty 4's or Halo 3's, while bringing an increasingly stale genre kicking and screaming into the brave new world of multiplayer gaming. Now make with the details, Level 5. We'll be waiting.

omg i gotta agree, ive been coming in and out of this website, and was pretty disappointed also not seeing at least one post but this one (finally!). I mean whats up with sony also at TGS this year, what da hell happend with those 11 something titles? I know demon and souls, quantum theory and that other rpg have been announced, but wheres the others! argh, gotta calm myself down and stay patient........gotta stay patient...
deathxrebirth @ Oct 12th 2008 1:55AM
Exactly. What did Sony announce? Did they even have a keynote like MS did? I don't recall one being reported on.
I am more than happy with my PS3 and Sony, but it seems like MS is constantly (almost weekly) making new and exciting moves. Sony seems like they are sitting on their hands this gen and quite frankly, it is just boring.
Where are the big in-house exclusives? Something out of their Japan studio would be nice. I don't even know if Sony has 18 new games that we have not heard about across all the third party developers AND all three of their systems.
Come on, already...
ryan @ Oct 12th 2008 12:34AM
coming from a 360 fan, this jrpg looks to be much stronger than Tales of Vesparia, Infinite Undiscovery or even Eternal Sonata. seems like the PS3 finally got it's killer jrpg and it looks to be well worth the wait. :)
C.S @ Oct 12th 2008 12:41AM
i gotta say also, it would be a jaw dropper, if level 5 announced that one of the online modes were to be a somewhat mmorpg of the white knight chronicles universe, thatd be nice cuz once your done with single player campaign, you could play the mmo online. This made me think of this idea from that 3rd picture. That may sound like a "no way get out" of kinda thing, but I think its possible, :D.
Big D. @ Oct 12th 2008 12:41AM
They finally put something new up and it's something I don't care about? GRRR...LOL naw, but cool for the RPG fans.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 12th 2008 1:00AM
Looks great...Prolly wont buy it but it is very welcome to the library!
fiziks @ Oct 12th 2008 1:49AM
what's with japan's online paranoia anyhow?
Ben @ Oct 12th 2008 5:16AM
I've got to say... You scared be in the introductory paragraph; the word "however" has a negative connotation, afterall.
I'm looking forward to the game. I'm sure I'll buy it when I can.
You see, I'm hoping that Sony's act at the moment (with being reasonably silent and uninventive) is an actual marketing act. :>
Martin hald @ Oct 12th 2008 5:30AM
ahm..
Martin hald @ Oct 12th 2008 5:41AM
What is up with you guys?
I know that Sony has been lacking at TGS (I'm also waiting for those remaining 14 or something titles) but they have stepped so much up this year with games, PSN, the xmb.. and so much more!
So really. What are you complaining for?
- I even remember sony saying a couple of weeks ago, that they would not have a keynote/showing at TGS so that is really not a big thing..
MaliceMajorE15 @ Oct 12th 2008 7:32AM
@ Martin Hald......OMFG What are you talking about. sure the xmb is a welcome addition and the service has improved but these improvements are features the ps3 should have had from launch considering how long after the 360 it launced. I bought my ps3 when it first came out for £430. Those were dark days indeed when there was nothing out for the console except resistance. All my mates have 360's and i could see how good their service was and i held out for a ps3 with confidence that it would trounce any feature that microsoft could come up with. i thought that would be the reason for the expense. i read about the consoles power, having 7 processors to the 360's 3 and i waited with bated breath to be blown away by mind boggling graphics. Instead i ended up with a relativly weaker graphics card and extremely poor ports of average 360 games. But i stuck with sony through and through and defended every criticism leveled at the console, bought every peripheral and any title worth having including the ps store ones. and i also live in europe where it is evident that sony didnt really care to much about the market. i looked at the us and japanese ps stores with envy. but somehow i found the perservarance that got me through that tough period. I feel now that although the ps3 is headed in the right direction its still a long way behind its main rival, and a strong showing on its home turf at tgs would be the key to showing the would that its still the same sony capable of delivering the same quality of service that it offered with previous consoles. Tgs is where sony should be taking the fight to microsoft, like in any sport were you have home favourites.so before you start criticising people for questioning why sony is yet again not delivering on promises made think about the bigger picture, microsoft is taking japan by storm, Ms also have a cheaper console by far following the price drop, chrismas is coming and moms who dont know any better will get the cheaper alternative leading to a greatly increased customer base, leading developers backing the 360 exclusively leading to the demised of the playstation. Sony has said there will not be a price drop on the ps3 so it will be important that at the last major game show of the calendar year they can prove why their product is best.
Martin hald @ Oct 12th 2008 10:25AM
Did i say short? :X
Devin @ Oct 12th 2008 11:17AM
Martin, you have a point that MS is doing a great job, making you question Sony, but what did you expect? For as much money that they have thrown into the gaming arena, there's now way they could not do good. Instead of producing a bunch of great 1st party titles, they have a handful with a lot of the money going to past-exclusive titles to shorten the gap between the consoles. Yet, even with that said, Sony's console IMO is still the best. What games are on 360 that aren't coming to PS3? Which console will cost you the most in the longterm? Which console isn't even 2 years old yet? If you don't think great titles are on their way (or are already here), then I don't know what to tell you. Don't get me wrong, I hate how 3rd party titles continue to be ported and once-exclusive 3rd party titles are now jumping ship and going multi-plat, but Sony is turning it around and getting developers to develop games first for PS3 and then porting the game over to 360. As for Skate2, they did it because they wanted both the PS3 version to be up-to-par. Performance was their only perogative, versus it being for both graphics and performance. I feel that all the money Sony is "saving" by not spending it on 3rd party exclusives have lead them to have a lot of good things cooking in-house. Whether this is true, we will need to see. Xmas is almost here and a bunch of exciting new titles are coming very soon. I hope you can give Sony a chance before giving up on them.
Martin hald @ Oct 12th 2008 12:13PM
@ Devin
Think you missunderstanded the posts.
We share the same thoughts, i think.
I question ms's way of buying out sony, really. I don't think that is all right but who does?
One thing is quite clear; Sony caught up on ms this year. I too think that sony's console is the best, but I wish developers would make the best they can for each individual console.
One more example - a odd one maybe, but here we I go; Back in times of the xbox and ps2, developers did what they could to make the best game for each console. Ps2 as well as xbox. At some point the ps2 could not follow up with xbox, but that did not stop the developers from doing their job on making the best for xbox, right? Graphics just got better and better.
But in this generation it seems like developers wants everybody to have the same experience, even if it keeps one console from 'doing its best'.
What you are saying about skate 2 is that graphics will be better on ps3? Or am i wrong?
And yes - I will give sony the chance of showing me what they got. :)
Light @ Oct 12th 2008 5:48AM
I think this game will be gorgeus.
Someone in this forum told that MS is making some exciting moves and that's probably true... But do you think Sony will not react? I think they will do, they have already done something "strange" and new, like Little Big Planet, Locoroco and some others great games... Moreover let's think about the Blue Ray disk victory against the HD dvd. Do you think Sony is so weak and MS so strong? I don't think so.
Vincent @ Oct 12th 2008 6:35AM
You scared me with the "Region-locked" I guess you meant people with US PSN wouldn't be able to play with EU players or JP ones right? Nothing to do with the console region
-Jad- @ Oct 12th 2008 6:43AM
Hahaha I'm so buy it this baby.
nesstee @ Oct 12th 2008 7:13AM
Im glad great minds think alike =D, I had that idea for multiplayer play in an rpg a couple years ago. Even went as far as to jot it down on several pieces of paper. Im just glad its being done
Martin hald @ Oct 12th 2008 10:22AM
@ MaliceMajorE15
That was a long post - No offense, really. I'm not that good in english, so i'm going to keep it short.
I'm danish, therefore I have been giving the same treatment by sony as you and every other european ps3 owner has.
I bought the PS3 at the same time as you, it seems, and that fact alone is the thing that keeps me positive around nearly every move sony does because the ps3 have made a big jump since launch and I'm sure sony is going to give us what we thought we got in the first place.
Yes, the graphics sucks compared to the promise both sony and ms gave us when they introduced the next generation (ps3, 360). It will never look like the real world on this generation of systems.
But then again, I IMAGINE that it's kind of hard to live up to the real-world-graphics-promise when games developers aren't working hard enough on making it look real.
Am I wrong when I say there is only one game which uses the 'full power' of the ps3 (heavy rain)?
Just to bring up one example. SKATE2, right? The developers said in a interview that they are "using the ps3 as lead platform" now. Thats great and all, but then they say they will "make the games look exactly the same on both platforms." What? We are on the turning point and begin to see the ps3 can do better graphics than the 360. We are going to see that in killzone 2, heavy rain and god of war. Why then tone the graphics down on the ps3? If the developers are going to make games look the same on both platforms then we will never see better graphics on the ps3 because developers will sooner or later reach the limits of the 360 (we begin to see that, don't we?).
This is no offense, really. Please corrct me if i'm wrong. (you will for sure :D)
And for the last note - I'm not criticising. It's just a simple question.
Martin hald @ Oct 12th 2008 10:26AM
Did I say i wanted to make it short? : x oops
