Unreal Tournament III to get expansion
While nowhere as successful as Gears of War, Epic Games is working on an expansion to their multiplayer shooter, Unreal Tournament III. "We're working together on a major expansion that we expect will excite and grow our UT3 customer base," Epic Games' VP Mark Reins told Gamespot.
No other specifics were provided, such as release date or format (DLC? Expansion pack disc?). Considering the game debuted on the PS3, we're going to keep our eyes peeled for any more info.

Anyone even still play this game? I remember the game sucked.
dabamf @ Oct 20th 2008 4:58PM
I play this game for PC only. There is a ton of great DLC for it, most are available for PS3. The downloadable characters (Samus, Masterchief, Spawn, The Terminator) are fun to use, and there are some great gameplay modes that people have created:
1) The Haunting - 3rd person action (RE4 style) game where you kill zombies.
2) UT2D - Play UT3 as a 2D platforming game (Super Smash Brothers style)...pretty frantic.
Overall I think UT3 is highly underrated, and the DLC makes this title well worth it if you're willing to do a little searching at the forum:

Well, the thing is, you gotta like good tournament style shooters. As far as that genre goes, UT3 is the top dog. But yeah, if you're not into that then you'll probably hate it. Just like for me, I love Burnout Paradise but I hate GT... just not my kinda game.
Either way, I LOVE what they've done with UT3 on PS3 to further advance consoles. The ability to download mods galore and use K&M controls is just awesome. I support them just for that alone.
DigDug @ Oct 20th 2008 6:24PM
I still play it alot. The DLC adds huge value. Those that say it sucked, have basically been sucked in by Microsoft hate..
(they were programmed to hate it, and by the time they realised it was also coming to 360, it was too late to change their tune).
bassist @ Oct 20th 2008 4:45PM
I really don't understand why so many people say the game sucks. It's a great fast-paced multiplayer FPS, great engine, smooth framerate, great graphics, allows keyboard/mouse controls, and allows custom content which brought us a huge variety of amazing maps, with new ones still being released every week.
I always thought it just got lost in the COD4 hype, and that's why fairly few people were online, unfortunately. But seriously, what's not to like about this game?
adolson @ Oct 20th 2008 4:57PM
Personally, I think I just outgrew the UT style of gameplay, but you're right. People bash on it for no real reason. The one game we get where the developers bothered to give us keyboard and mouse support, and nobody plays it.
Though, I didn't like going back to keyboard and mouse, myself, as I found the gamepad controls to be easier and well done. I guess I am used to analog sticks now. :)
dabamf @ Oct 20th 2008 5:00PM
I agree heartily. I think people hate on this game because it's not Gears of War. I don't get it...see my response to Adrian above.
benny boy @ Oct 20th 2008 5:09PM
I'm not hating on the game but I just didn't enjoy playing it. The main reason being that it is sooo bland and generic that I just didn't find it fun.
Surely the graphics, framerate, mouse/keyboard support etc. don't really matter if the game has no soul and isn't that enjoyable. I know some people will disagree with my but that is just my personal opinion.
Lars @ Oct 20th 2008 6:25PM
"The main reason being that it is sooo bland and generic that I just didn't find it fun."
I can see where you're coming from. I feel the same way about a lot of shooters, but still I gotta snag a good one every once in a while. The same sentiment applies for Halo, Gears, Farcry, CoD, etc. But I'll still snag a decent shooter if I'm in the mood.
Depends on what mood I'm in too. For gritty realistic warfare I'll get CoD or MoH, for fast tournament action UT, for team/class based play Warhawk or Team Fortress, and so on.
lennygundam14 @ Oct 20th 2008 4:45PM
and here I was about to get rid of this game from my library..
mike @ Oct 20th 2008 4:46PM
Seriously? That was the only ps3 title I thought sucked so bad I traded in and lost money. Every other title I've kept or if I didn't really get into it I gave to a friend to enjoy.
GENTLEMEN @ Oct 20th 2008 4:46PM
This is great. can't wait to see what it is. UT is far superior to gears anyways.
Andrew @ Oct 20th 2008 4:47PM
I work for Best Buy; this game dropped to 19.99 today if anyone is interested in it.
GENTLEMEN @ Oct 20th 2008 4:49PM
Only the new generation of FPS gamers hate the UT style of gameplay.
ryan @ Oct 20th 2008 5:11PM
So does that mean veterans who've played these tournaments years back can't be sick of them now? i sure am.
GENTLEMEN @ Oct 20th 2008 5:12PM
The same can be said about Street Fighter or King of Fighters. What we do is keep introducing new variables, new tweaks, slight differences to keep the things competitive and such.
ryan @ Oct 20th 2008 5:59PM
yeah, so you can't really say that just the new gen hates it. there ARE people who grew tired of it and are willing to try a new formula.
GENTLEMEN @ Oct 20th 2008 4:50PM
Also most people that hate on this game tend to suck ass on it. UT was made in the twitch era where the fastest man wins. Today's modern FPSes are more tactical and oftentimes slower based so people who play those games tend to hate Unreal Tournament.
GENTLEMEN @ Oct 20th 2008 4:51PM
I love this game. Anyone that says it sucks has been raised on modern FPSes which aren't as fast or as twitch centric.
adolson @ Oct 20th 2008 4:58PM
How many times will you post effectively the same comment? lol
GENTLEMEN @ Oct 20th 2008 4:59PM
It wasn't showing up the first few times so I reposted it. Though rephrased differently. This comment system really needs to be fixed.
HeyHello @ Oct 20th 2008 4:52PM
i hope they add multiplayer split screen.
Fane @ Oct 21st 2008 6:55PM
That would be nice, but (given previous statements) I doubt it.
il_duce620 @ Oct 20th 2008 4:53PM
Traditionally, I'm a pretty big fan of the Unreal Tournament franchise, but I've thus far skipped this one over.
Personally, I'm not buying this game unless split-screen multiplayer is enabled. I can get that in Warhawk (which is intensely fun), so unless I get the same kind of options in UTIII, they won't get my $$$.
flynn110 @ Oct 20th 2008 4:54PM
yeh. this game was great when people were playing it and before my controller got perpetual forward motion disease. i just dont ahve the right setup to play with my kb/m. anyways i look forward to what this might be. FRAG!
Snutz @ Oct 20th 2008 6:31PM
My controller came down with that too. Annoyed the hell out of me playing COD. Luckily it was my sixaxis and it was right before the DualShock came out so I just got one of those.
rgoff31 @ Oct 20th 2008 4:55PM
I'm sure all 4-5 of them are really excited.
jimhead @ Oct 20th 2008 5:02PM
If the uppdate will be anything splitscreen, I shall buy. This game.
Aaron @ Oct 20th 2008 5:02PM
Well, considering that Epic has released major expansions for every Unreal Tournament game -- adding news maps, characters, and vehicles (in the games that had vehicles, that is) -- and every single time they've released it for free, I'm going to go ahead and assume that they'll be doing this for free, too. A free expansion to drive sales of the game is way more profitable than selling some extra content to the people who already own it (Burnout seems to have perfected this).
Cameron @ Oct 20th 2008 5:21PM
I've got UT3 and honestly it was quite a let down because of the lack of online, because i was a die hard fan of UT2004 but for some reason something got lost in the transition, that and i fell in love with BF:BC, i guess generic space age shooters have had their day?
Honestly i felt that UT3 was missing something, between souless online play and a campaign mode that ended up feeling like the same level different bots.
People like hiding in bushes and dropping in tactically from rooftops, gone are the days where getting a rocket launcher and running around a corner were fun.
CrzyNick @ Oct 20th 2008 6:07PM
Sweet.
I hope they add trophies so some more people will buy it. That's the only flaw with the game, noobs play it , get owned, and the say it sucks.
Also I wish they add to the story because the last cut-scene made me want more.
KinjiroSSD @ Oct 20th 2008 6:24PM
Can't wait. I hope they add new maps and bring back some of the game modes from UT2k3/4. This is a great game to fill in time between new releases. Unfortunately, twitch shooters are alien to new age Halo-esque gamers.
Nerdkiller @ Oct 20th 2008 6:27PM
I've been wanting this game for some time, but then this site posted why no one was playing this game, which prevented me from getting it. Maybe I'll rent it out to see what its really like. I'll probably suck first, but like Warhawk, I'll improve. I wish Epic let Sony to bundle the game with new PS3's cos I wanna have some action.
PSN: Erdie @ Oct 20th 2008 6:40PM
It plays like a dream with mouse/keyboard, but I haven't quite mastered dualshock controls. No matter how I set the sensitivity and turn acceleration, it just doesn't feel right. That said, if an expansion does come out, count me in!
Konstantine @ Oct 20th 2008 6:54PM
Why is there so much hate here? UT III is a great shooter.
The Unreal series always has been, never focused on story though. Which is why alot of people don't like it. As for the multiplayer, it's STILL my favorite shooter series, always has been.
My favorite thing about the PS3 version was that I didn't have to upgrade my PC to get mouse and keyboard. I wish COD 4 had it, and Far Cry coming up. The AI on the bots is the best in the business.
Anyway...I can't wait for this.
LegendarySWE @ Oct 20th 2008 7:11PM
sold this game a long time ago.
elephant_stone @ Oct 20th 2008 7:14PM
I really liked the game but sold it after getting bored pretty quick of the single player, and the online was not great lets admit.
Ungruntled @ Oct 20th 2008 7:50PM
If they go down the Criterion/Burnout Paradise route, then my interest in this game may rise... I do own it but was surprised to find I wasn't taken by it, despite being a fan of the series in general. If I have to pay for DLC, then I won't be interested at all... but if it is free, and improves the game, then I may recommend it to friends. Just as I did with Burnout Paradise... quite a few of my mates went out and bought copies after the expansions were released. THAT is the way forward for DLC; improve the original game, for nowt, and increase interest and sales down the line...
SG @ Oct 20th 2008 8:46PM
Epic would be wise to release this game on the PSN for ~$15-20. I mean, the worst that would happen is that people end up buying the game. It's a solid title but it seems very few people are willing to shell out the cash.
Ty @ Oct 20th 2008 10:22PM
Well, its good news but, the bad news came when I bought this game. UT NEEDS Digital Extremes.
UTWarden @ Oct 21st 2008 11:44AM
UT3 is a fine game, I own it on both the PC and PS3, on the PC people are far too good for me so it's just NOT fun.
I put in the disk yesterday for UT3, and it's ok.
Epic tried to go back to its UT roots, in doing this the people who never saw or played UT didn't see UT's true glory. Alot of people played UT2KX and didn't like this. it was a mixed bag.
[Mxl] Billy @ Oct 21st 2008 2:25PM
UT3 Rocks!!!
