PSM3 explains 'Fallout 3 looks poor on PS3' comment
The internet is a big and scary place. People can twist your words in any which way they like. In fact, someone somewhere is twisting this sentence right now. So, when the internet population caught whiff of Euro mag PSM3's Fallout 3 review, surely the quote "The PS3 version compares poorly to its Xbox and PC counterparts" was interpreted in a myriad of ways -- some more sensational than the next.
However, PSM3 wants to set the record straight as to what it meant by that statement. The mag says "the PS3 version looks the same as on Xbox," but goes on to explain a laundry list of differences such as the PS3 version having slightly rougher draw distances, 'muddier' up-close textures and choppier frame rate. PSM3 says this disparity is minute and "won't hamper your enjoyment of the game in any way." Says PSM3, " ... it's still the same huge, epic, absorbing, brilliant adventure."
Well, there you go. Anyone worried about seeing an incredibly broken version should rest easy now. Fallout 3 comes out next Tuesday, October 28.

Hey Bethesda, the game comes out in 5 days. How about you show us the PS3 version yourself and lay these confusions to rest.
Whats that? No?
Hmmmmm... I wonder why that could be.
Eggy @ Oct 23rd 2008 7:55AM
Funny how they comment that the PS3 version has a choppier framerate in parts they haven't seen on the xbox 360.
The PC version is superior anyway, the difference between the consoles is minor.
Evi1d33d @ Oct 23rd 2008 11:17AM
I agree PC version all the way, especially with mod support. Mods on turned Oblivion into a completely different game and better than what the developer could ever put out. I downloaded a 2GB texture pack for Oblivion and it looked stunning. With all the bump map added it's like moving from PS2 to PS3.
ryan @ Oct 23rd 2008 11:33AM
I'll look forward to 8 person chat over LIVE while all my buddies are playing this awesome game gaining achievements.
Then when the funs all over I'll just download it on the PC for the mods (I technically own a copy of it anyway).
Devin @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:30PM
Thanks ryan for that great piece of news.....hope you have fun talking with all your "friends" while playing a game that DOESN'T require/need it.....
MakaiOokami @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:30PM
Don't worry Devin. Ryan's just jealous because rumor has it (it is a rumor but it's also a very highly likely rumor) that we're getting VIDEO CHAT by the end of teh year.
He also wants to make new friends on Home at any time just by going outside out virtual apartment and chatting with PS3 owners around the world. (You can go to different servers. It's not 100 percent easy to do but then again it's not overly difficult either I've been to Japanese servers plenty of times. Their Warhawk commercial is funny)
Furthermore the PC has theoretically limitless voice chat capabilities. You can chat with thousands of people online.
So what's this Ryan Xbot poon doin buggin us. DON'T GO HOME HOME IS FOR US, YOU GO BACK TO YOUR BLADES (Xbox GUI's name) AND CUT YOURSELF.
ryan @ Oct 23rd 2008 3:48PM
no, no. I actually do look forward to talking to my friends over live while playing this game or any game for that matter. it's easier than talking on my cell phone and less cumbersome than video chatting while playing games I can assure you.
so yeah, discussing this game while chatting to my friends is what I look forward to. no need to display your E-erections with a list of features at me. I was merely saying how I will enjoy this game and will continue to enjoy it on the PC.
ryan @ Oct 23rd 2008 3:17PM
lol, somebody's insecure!
RazLeBoL @ Oct 27th 2008 9:43PM
@Ryan Downloading the game on PC doesnt make it legal because you own it on another platform. It's piracy.. You have to buy it for every platform you want to play it on.
ryan @ Oct 23rd 2008 7:45PM
Technically yes, you still have to buy both. But I'm still supporting the company either way.
Masterofallz @ Nov 24th 2008 12:43AM
Ryan, while you play it illegally on the Computer, get sued by the company, get the FBI on your ***, and get your *** thrown in jail, I'll be staying here, playing resistence 2, CoD5, Home, and LittleBigPlanet.
Kevin PSN: Keviseg15 @ Oct 23rd 2008 7:52AM
ill get it for the PC anyways just to mod the crap out of it
sicsided @ Oct 23rd 2008 11:02AM
yeah, but who knows when they are going to release those mod tools... Hopefully it will be an easy work around.
Dartmerc @ Oct 23rd 2008 6:28PM
Yeah, bit disappointing that the mod toolkit isn't released day one. But I have faith that it'll turn up soon.
Rich @ Oct 23rd 2008 7:54AM
Hmph. It's still irritating that even now, we PS3 owners have to put up with last place in terms of performance when compared to XBOX360 and PC when we should be at least in second place (or equal second place). I mean come on, devs have had long enough to get used to harnessing the PS3's power. Stop screwing us over!!
William @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:07AM
You'd like to blame the developers instead of Sony for not being able to use the PS3's power. You're placing the blame wrong.
Sony has -always- had SDKs that were very hard to work with. Games improve when Sony's SDK improves. If you wnat the games to improve, press on Sony instead.
Microsoft, on the other hand, is a software company. Their SDK is much easier to work with, and they provide better support. As a result, developers can get up and running on the system quicker.
And of course, the PC hasn't changed drastically for quite a long time, so developers can work with it easiest of all.
gameforall @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:17AM
@William
We blame the developers because others have worked with the same tools and created games that don't show any of these problems
Popfrogs @ Oct 23rd 2008 10:30AM
@William: While you make some good points, they're moot now. You could have said their SDK was hard a year or two ago, but not now.
Also the PS3 version of Oblivion was superior to the 360 version in many ways. If this game is using the same engine, there's simply no excuse. It is the developer's fault.
deaftly @ Oct 23rd 2008 10:38AM
you're also talking about a whole year later for oblivion's release on ps3
ajiezer @ Oct 23rd 2008 11:54AM
My exact thoughts, many developers have proven that games on the PS3 can be great so screw them instead of us, I was eager to buy that game but now I'm not so sure.
smak @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:56PM
You guys are forgetting that Fallout 3 was nearly an xbox 360 exclusive. PS3 dev was probably tacked on later in the development cycle.
chums @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:00AM
ps3's lack of ram, always screws up the textures
although the other stuff can probably be overcome with good programming, but thats too much to ask
RC @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:27AM
BS, games that are developed to use the strengths of the PS3 look better than 360 games. Take a look at MGS4 or Uncharted sometime. Nothing on the 360 looks as good.
Brucie B @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:47AM
WOW RC, Str8 Up Fanboy!
NikkiNiel @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:48AM
Lack of RAM? It has 512mb of RAM, same as the Xbox 360. Half of that RAM is also 4 times faster than the 360 ram.
And yes, the RSX can borrow RAM from the Cell memory so don't try to pull that one.
Arnon @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:24AM
I disagree RC.. Fable 2's scenery is some of the best I have ever seen in a console.
vahdyx @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:46AM
I disagree with arnon, Fable 2 is a choppy enhanced version of fable 1
I really don't like the graphics of fable 2
Now Gears of War on the other hand! Yes, I could have agreed with yah, but no not Fable 2, but Fable 2 is an incredibly fun game. I'm playing it right now and won't ever diss on the gameplay
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 24th 2008 5:17AM
Ah, that explains all those low res textures in WipeoutHD then.
Oh wait.............
Thomas @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:13AM
Well these minute shortcomings is just the cherry on top of the sundae for me. First issue I had the game was that it was NOT going to have DLC like the 360 version. Second issue, how could you not develop a game like this first on the PS3, and then port to the 360, it would have made for a better game overall. I'm going to pick up Fallout 3, but it'll be for 29.99, or 19.99 as soon as it hits the bargin bin.
Marco Cano Jr @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:46AM
word. although, it will be an instapurchase when they patch in you know what. which is a shame because I want the collectors edition
kenjix @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:14AM
This is what I recommend. Forget Fallout 3 and get Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Motorstorm 2 and Socom and there are a ton of other ways to spend your money rather than supporting developers who lack the skill to program on the PS3.
Pete @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:03AM
Right, because those 3 games are a replacement for an RPG.
kenjix @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:25AM
those games are worth $60 bucks
Arnon @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:26AM
Eh.. Motorstorm 2 hasn't been doing too well compared to the first one.
kenjix @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:32AM
oh what makes you say that, the reviews posted or your experience with the actual game?
lobotomies4free @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:02PM
want to buy my Socom off me?
kenjix @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:31PM
already got it :) Thanks though
Sneeches @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:18AM
how about some trophy support?? That pisses me off that we dont get that, they've had long enough to put that into this game.
And im sick of everyone saying all games look better on the 360....come on, someone needs to stand up and make the ps3 the powerfull machine that it is.
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:27AM
But I thought Oblivian looked better on PS3? What happened here?
ryan @ Oct 23rd 2008 11:33AM
Bethesda needed a whole extra year for it to look better on the PS3. :P
Devin @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:46PM
@ryan
Or...........they never started development for the game at the time of the 360/PC versions (waiting to see if they sold well) and they NEEDED a year's time to develop the game....
Either way, the game looked better and everyone knows it.
CABALLOTE @ Oct 24th 2008 12:09AM
that's an extremely good point Fenix. I personally think they did what they could over @ Bethesda. If they couldn't get it a certain way because of hardware/technical restrictions it's not their fault. I loved Uncharted, I caught myself going back to it a couple times. It looked really really good. Although its looks were there the gameplay and story was also, and thats what made that game good not just the graphics.
Seb @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:40AM
They said the same thing about The Orange Box and it didn't affect me in any way. This is really tit for tat to be honest, your not going to notice it unless your either reviewing or comparing it to the 360 version in great detail.
Silverbullet767 @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:50AM
@ xFenixKnightx:
The PS3 version had more development time, therefore they could polish it off a bit.
I'll be buying this for the 360 anyway, no trophys? DLC?
It's a no brainer.
kentuckyfried @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:11AM
The ps3 version is getting trophy support...in a patch.
DLC's not going to be immediate, but I think it'll happen just as it happened with Oblivion. Even if it doesn't, it's not really even that significant according to most ppl I talked to who played Oblivion to death.
If you want devs to keep churning out 360 titles as lead, keep buying those 360 titles.
Ted @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:57AM
Still getting this for PS3 day one, and skipping R2!
Daniel @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:39AM
That's too bad, the R2 Beta is a blast. I can't wait to see what the Campaign holds.
TLG @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:07AM
Another bad PS3 port with worse graphics , lower framerate , lower resolution textures , worse draw distance , NO DLC , and if its anything like OBLIVION PS3 GotY Edition, BUG RIDDEN - Never trust Bethesda. They are despised for a reason.
chr0nicblazer @ Oct 23rd 2008 9:10AM
That str8 xbox favorism and sum bullshit. Im cancelling my Collectors Edition for RFOM2 Collectors Edition today!
Tyler @ Oct 23rd 2008 4:28PM
Just a bit of info, its not RFOM2 its just R2...
I also got the collectors edition preordered. I have played played the beta almost nonstop since it came out... Coop is amazing, and the competitive can be cool.
I CAN'T WAIT until it comes out!!!
It IS a much better game anyway!
