Rumor: LittleBigPlanet sequel already in the works
LittleBigPlanet is right on the cusp of official release. However, before the game has a chance to spread to the wider public, word arrives that Media Molecule is already working on a sequel. That's according to BBC technology editor Darren Waters, who recently visited the Guildford-based team.
Considering that MM co-founder Alex Evans has said that LittleBigPlanet was the quickest and easiest game he's worked on, the feasibility of making a LBP2: The Return of Sackboy is very high. Then again, Waters could be talking about the PSP title. Anyway, it is way too early for gamers to start thinking about sequels ... or trilogies. Let's see how the first one does before getting into future titles, shall we?

I always did wonder about the business model for this game. Obviously downloadable content is good but there comes a time when you'll want to change so major things. They can't give this to us all in free patches (unless it's really selling that many systems for sony) but having different tools or different abilities for optional tools would affect compatibilty.
I guess the bottom line is..... what can they really sell the second game on?

LBP Kart.
You know it'll come at some point.

WOW.... touche

I hope they are talking about a PsP game. I don't know about how an actual sequel would do for LBP. The game is amazing, but that's because of all three things you can do. Play, Create, Share. I just don't see how they could add enough to Create and Share, besides a bunch of stickers and maybe a couple more textures. It would have to come with a ton of Story levels to justify another $60 purchase. I hope if they do want to do more LBP for PS3, they do it by just making a bunch more story levels and releasing them on PSN. I'd definitely pay for that.

One thing I find sorely lacking is water. It'd be nice if you could use some kind of fluid for traps and puzzles. Imagine triggering a bucket that dumps into a seesaw which opens a door.
Even sand would work for stuff like this but water is more suited to death traps. Underwater levels would be cool also.
Puli @ Oct 27th 2008 12:30PM
I heard somewhere that they might be able to add water in.

I hope they put some effort into making a 1080i/p game this time.

water is in the game, it kills you but it's there

I think one thing they can add right away will be different abilities for Sackboys (Sack Persons?).
Being able to jump, hold, and interact with things are great, but what if you could attach powers or abilities to your Sackboy?
I'd like to have a feature similar to Lego Batman where you can switch out suits for various abilities.
I'd like there to also be a feature that let you hold items like shields, swords, or other objects similar to Smash Bros. to take down enemies.
Maybe a mushroom that made Sackboys bigger or gave them invincibility...
I don't know if some or all of these exist... but I haven't seen them yet and I got to see the beta.
It would be great if these features came as patches to the system.
Also, being able to upload your own images created via Photoshop, as well as, music files of your own, needs to be a must have for the next version. It would be nice if those features came in a patch though.

None of those type of things exist in the game atm. But things like weapons and shields could be made by people using the tools they have. Hmm, giving me ideas now.
j.howlett @ Oct 27th 2008 10:00AM
how could you not have faith in this games success?
Puli @ Oct 27th 2008 10:05AM
Agreed. Amazing game. So far I've 100% everything. Just waiting on the servers to come up.
Oh, and by the way to anyone who cares. You can get 50% of the trophies without the servers, the other 50% rely on online stuff.
Hife @ Oct 27th 2008 10:06AM
No no no, they can charge us for extensive updates if they must, but I don't think a sequel is the way to go. I will hope it is for the psp.
Lard @ Oct 27th 2008 10:21AM
Great - how long until it's censored?
Brutal89 @ Oct 27th 2008 10:23AM
Awesooome! This game is exactly what I was looking for. I may be too old to say this but a LBP cartoon sounds fun XD! BTW, I got an extra Kratos code. I'll trade someone for a Noriko code. Proving its a real code sounds like a small problem.
Vincent @ Oct 27th 2008 10:37AM
I don't think there is need for a sequel. Just release downloadable content (extra tools, power-ups, etc).
I hope what he saw was a PSP game
The_Icon @ Oct 27th 2008 11:11AM
Its a big bad decision if they are thiking of a sequel. Like everyone is saying, just expand the tools using the DLC.
Puli @ Oct 27th 2008 11:42AM
In more current news, servers are up and running in the US!
FourKings @ Oct 27th 2008 12:46PM
What about the ability to create fully 3D worlds?
Lars @ Oct 27th 2008 1:37PM
I hope they have both games access the same servers. Kinda like how Rock Band DLC works with Rock Band 1 or 2. I'd love to have access to everyone's creations from LBP 1 & 2.
HAAS599 @ Oct 27th 2008 1:57PM
Lots of great ideas here. MM will be patching this game with updates for a long time.
A true sequel shouldnt happen until the PS4. Sony needs to get MM a SDK for the PS4 ASAP so LBP2 can be a launch title for the next console. I think that would get the PS4 off to a lot better start than the PS3.
jahd5000 @ Oct 27th 2008 4:43PM
well ive always tought LBP is a one time only game... or maybe just one per generation... sequesl would be veru stupid, they could just expand with patches, and who knows maybe paid add-ons if a very big addtion.
Arnon @ Oct 28th 2008 9:16AM
I sure as hell hope this is not true.. LBP is a game that needs to breathe. It is the sort of game that can have tons of DLC released.. we don't need a sequel for a long long time.
