Video capture in the works for future PSP firmware
With PSP firmware 5.00 out of the way, what are Sony's engineers in Japan working on now? Looks like video capture is the "next big thing" for the PSP. PS3 has the ability to record gameplay footage and upload it directly to YouTube. Not many games support this, but do a search for PixelJunk Eden on YouTube, and you'll find tons of direct-feed user-generated videos.
It'll be exciting to see PSP games support this in the future. We're intrigued by the possibility of recording our own game footage -- but is the PSP really powerful enough to handle 3D gaming and video recording at the same time? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Hey, they already muffed up the display 'in order to fix it', so what next for an encore? Shutting down any ability to play games whatsoever in favor of video capture? Can't wait.

If they can pull it off for all PSP and not make it a, say, PSP-2000/3000/4000 only feature, that would be awesome...

sweet. god knows how much time i spent taking pics in locoroco and wipeout pulse. this is gonna make my monster hunting dreams come true!

What I hate about these features is that, like Custom Soundtracks and Screenshots for the PS3, it's only available for select games. Some people might not want to use UMD space for that. Others might not have the time or development funds to expend. It should be integrated into the official firmware. And while it may make performance for a lot of games not-so-stellar, it is definitely easier for developers to optimize for video recording then to code entirely new systems for the process into their game.

You have no clue how this works. The feature would go in the firmware itself, meaning it takes up space on PSPs internal flash, not the UMD

It adds the capacity to record video; the software for capturing the video itself is not stored within the firmware, it has to be placed on the UMD.

Dear Japan,
While this is cool and will help out a great many,
I was really truly hoping for PSP trophies that integrate with our current PSN accounts so I can upgrade my gamer level while on the road. This would be epic for me.
Do the same thing that you are doing for the PS3 library and patch old games to have trophies. That would increase the replay-ability for older games as well as boost sales for people that LOVE the trophy system.
Yours,
Average Gamer.

lol, way to catch up with homebrew community Sony, this has already been possible with cfw plugins for like 2years.
atastysammich @ Oct 27th 2008 10:05PM
I don't see why it can't handle it! Isn't the 2000 (and presumably the 3000, too) packing spare horsepower that's almost never been used by games?
02134 @ Oct 27th 2008 10:13PM
This was already possible long ago on CFW.
Gurbinder @ Oct 28th 2008 3:35PM
Yeah but depending on the game its incredibly laggy.
XyTec @ Oct 27th 2008 11:28PM
ive seen so many MHF videos i forgot it wasnt an official feature yet...
TM @ Oct 27th 2008 11:28PM
so...now law abiding citizens can get the same features

Actually the only legal thing you violate by modding your PSP is the warranty. Whether you break the EULA or not, depends on which EULA you agreed to. I believe Sony changed it to include unofficial software sometime after FW 2.80, that move in and of itself is a legal grey area.

I guess this might be like trophies for some, but I really have no interest in recording video of myself playing a game. Nor do I ever look at videos of other people playing their games. To me, this seems like more of a tool for gaming journalists, rather than the average game player.

Next PSP4 will most likely have a built in webcam. PSP should have no problems handling a 1.3 MP webcam or VGA.
Dr Haisook @ Oct 30th 2008 8:18AM
I'm not that thrilled.

I just keep wondering when they will improve the web browser to not suck, that would be nice. Seriously though, as 'neat' as this feature will be there's a multitude of other things the device could use before this. granted that's just my opinion, but the ability to have the web browser use your mem stick as spare memory so you could load pages faster and more complete, would be nice.
