LittleBigPlanet servers shut off in attempt to fix 'glitches'
As is the case with many online-integrated games these days, the LittleBigPlanet servers appear to have imploded by the weight of a large influx of gamers trying to play, create and share. According to Media Molecule, "the servers are down while we try to fix the glitching issues some players have experienced. They will be back online as soon as we have fixed the problem."
While many are eager to jump online, let's not forget that these kind of issues are sadly common during the first few weeks of a product launch. (Examples: SOCOM, Metal Gear Online, GTA IV) Hopefully, it won't be too long until things are sorted out.

got to love the PSN. You get what you pay for.
stinghp @ Oct 28th 2008 1:36PM
how is that? the LBP servers are down but the PSN is still up. so we are just getting quality over quantity.
Evi1d33d @ Oct 28th 2008 1:38PM
Right... oh and how did Xbox Live hold up during Halo launch and Christmas?
Jerses @ Oct 28th 2008 1:38PM
Do you pay for PSN? man i must be special because mine is free :P
kwhill00 @ Oct 28th 2008 1:43PM
The reason why I say this is that anything that comes out that uses the Playstation network does not work. this is any game that has an online component. There has not been one game in 2 years that worked. everygame that comes out there is always a release stating that there is an overwhelming usage of there servers and we are working on them as fast as they can. Then 4 patches later they might get it right.
David @ Oct 28th 2008 1:55PM
LOL, Resistance a more than a year ago game, offers 40 players online with no lag (did I hear Gears of Lag?).
Beat this, 'cause in some days there's Resistance 2 (60 players online) and also later next year MAG (256 players online, maybe 4 a fee), so...
orthonovum @ Oct 28th 2008 2:34PM
dude.. it's not PSN.. PSN is fine, its the LBP servers... these issues live in the internetLBP server space not the PSN space
pshhh

when you are actually in game, the game's servers are no longer in use. players' connections are used to host the actual game. at least when dealing with gears of war and resistance. lbp is different but, if you want a description of how netcode works that's a whole other discussion.

Meh, this is the first PS3 game that has had major issues for me. And blaming the PSN for Media Molecule's servers is pretty retarded. Should I bring up Castle Crashers and the fact that I PAID for broken multiplayer on XBL? At least broken multiplayer is FREE on PSN.
Replica23 @ Oct 28th 2008 6:55PM
It has nothing to do with how much you pay, if you believe that than Microsoft succeeded in duping you for coin on a service that could easily be free. Steam is free, has no ads (other than for the games it sells) and crushes both PSN and XBL in stability and speed. I'm not defending or challenging Sony's network record, but it has little to do with how much you pay.
ricky @ Oct 28th 2008 1:34PM
time heals all wounds, i guess.
Evi1d33d @ Oct 28th 2008 1:35PM
These kind of things happen all the time. Usually it's best to avoid the online portion of the game when it first launches. I'm pretty sure the single player levels will keep the player busy until the flood calms down. Still waiting for UPS to deliver the game today = /
Walmarki @ Oct 28th 2008 1:37PM
CVG say LittleBigPlanet is released in the UK tomorrow 29th october, is this true? i thought it was next wednesday 5th november.
deaftly @ Oct 28th 2008 1:40PM
PSN - where you truly get what you pay for.
acefondu @ Oct 28th 2008 1:47PM
Yeah, free CoD4, GTAIV, MGSIV, Resistance, and Soul Calibur 4 all free online with no bugs to speak of. And you know, Sony never shut down the PSN yet as far as I'm aware, unlike MS that shut theirs down for a time after it had issues and if I'm not mistaken people were still being charged for the service.
deaftly @ Oct 28th 2008 1:54PM
Well you're wrong to begin with. I'll leave it at that I suppose.

orthonovum @ Oct 28th 2008 2:33PM
another fool... dude.. can you not differentiate between PSN and LBP servers? PSN is up and running, works great, each game has their own server farm unrelated to PSN... wow.. just wow..... *sigh*
acefondu @ Oct 28th 2008 2:23PM
Luckily I wasn't paying for them to fix it.
NipGrip @ Oct 28th 2008 2:32PM
You're an idiot. It's got nothing to do with the PSN service overall, but everything to do with MediaMolecule not being ready for launch. The PSN is just a backbone handling the accounts, friends lists, the PSN store, etc.. Us connecting to MM and the LBP servers has nothing to do with the PSN. If you had half a brain in that Koolaid Jug body of yours, you'd understand this.
Go back under your bridge now, troll.
Popfrogs @ Oct 28th 2008 6:51PM
I figured our resident troll would chime in at an opportune moment. Just the other day he said he spent 7 hours playing LBP now he's bashing it.
I guess he's one of those guys who...ah.."swings both ways".
acefondu @ Oct 28th 2008 1:45PM
I'm more annoyed that LBP makes you connect to the servers constantly causing single player activities to become laggy and useless. I'm glad I turned off the PSN last night so I could work on my level without having my game freeze when I try to undo something.
linebeginstoblur @ Oct 28th 2008 2:05PM
I'm with you. Personally, I don't really care too much for most online components (Not to give any spoilers, but if you've finished Story mode, you know how the final boss felt about his creations; that's pretty much me too). In fact, it's a pet peeve of mine that PLAY ONLINE is so huge when you select a level and playing on your own is so tiny. So for someone who just prefers to do stuff on his own in single-player--at least for now--to have to suffer severe lag due to server problems is pretty messed up.
davebo @ Oct 28th 2008 2:13PM
I agree with linebeginstoblur here. These "issues," while soon fixed, only remind us that these online capabilities won't be around forever and showcase the importance of games needed to have worth outside of online capabilities. I want to be able to pick up PS3 games in 20 years and still have fun playing single player and local multiplayer modes as I can do today with old Nintendo games. The online is icing on the cake for as long as it's still supported, but LBP did things right by including local co-op, something many games neglect unfortunately.
Lars @ Oct 28th 2008 8:39PM
It would be great if it would ask you whether you want to connect or not... but oh well. Still an awesome game regardless of it's little annoyances (and every game has some annoyances).
Logging out of the PSN works though. Log out before starting the game, then log back in after getting into your pod. It will then prompt you whether you want to connect to Mm's servers or not.
drdre74 @ Oct 28th 2008 1:57PM
ok so what was the point of the beta if they are still having these major issues?
Evi1d33d @ Oct 28th 2008 2:43PM
To keep the fanboys from whining until the game comes out.
Popfrogs @ Oct 28th 2008 10:19PM
1. To iron out game problems
2. To iron out server problems.
However, being an IT guy myself, I know there's a huge difference between "ok this should work fine with 100 users" and "oh shit it's imploding, it doesn't work fine with 100 users".
Scale that up by about a factor of 1000 and I can't imagine how their team handles a launch like this. I mean, honestly, it happens with every_single_major_release of ANY title.
Give it a few days to settle down like usual. I'm sure they're all running around and having vendors ship them more servers, playing with routers and switches, and doing everything they can to get it resolved.
vagabond99 @ Oct 28th 2008 2:10PM
Damn you guys complain a lot.
EvoAnubis @ Oct 28th 2008 2:12PM
Um.......you guys posted this WAAAAAY too late.LBP Servers are back up.
JAH75157 @ Oct 28th 2008 2:17PM
i hope they are back up i wanna show my mother (who may buy a ps3 now) the online part of this game. she loves this game and wanted to make sure she knew how to turn on my ps3 before i went to work today. (they are visiting from out of town)
gmacek @ Oct 28th 2008 2:17PM
I was definitely wondering why I and a couple friends were experiencing huge lags, even in local level playing. It was frustrating enough last night to just unplug the Ethernet so it wouldn't bother us. After plugging back in once our session was done, it was complaining about not being able to login to the LBP servers.
But I agree online access during local play seems unnecessary. A small issue at the launch of an otherwise amazing game. My friends and I have had an absolute blast playing, stickering, changing costumes, etc. and we're only through the first few levels.
Buds @ Oct 28th 2008 2:32PM
I was unable to connect to the servers at all last night... hopefully they'll get this fixed today... I've been looking forward to trying the online content.
magicfett @ Oct 28th 2008 2:32PM
Xbots are funny, sorry you don't get to play the game of the year until you visit your more intelligent friend who purchased a better system.
Rory @ Oct 28th 2008 3:20PM
Everything is up and running now.
rgoff31 @ Oct 28th 2008 3:47PM
The real test will be the prime time load.
SuperDuckWC @ Oct 28th 2008 4:16PM
So, how it works now? faster than yesterday?
Roadkill @ Oct 28th 2008 5:14PM
Imho I think they're more laggy then what I experienced yesterday... although i'm on peak times right now, last time i was on around 2am or so.
Roadkill @ Oct 28th 2008 5:13PM
Servers are up :)
I think i made some people mad... I covered them in pink flowers when they couldn't get up those spinny things in the batman level :D
Amae @ Oct 28th 2008 6:03PM
vaguely related question, does anyone know how to export a picture taken in LBP to a usb drive?
Popfrogs @ Oct 28th 2008 6:56PM
If the pictures show up in the XMB under photos, just plug in your drive, hit triangle on the pic and choose Copy.
nate @ Oct 28th 2008 6:22PM
for some reason its not showing my play, create, share numbers. like leveling up or w.e you want to call it?
Eneref @ Oct 28th 2008 6:31PM
Grrrr. I'm just bitter at Amazon right now. Paid extra for release-day delivery. It hasn't even shipped yet. Called to complain, and they said pretty much, "Oh... sorry. Too bad. You might get it by next week."
Ah well. Maybe they'll have the server issues ironed out by the time it arrives. :)
iamkid @ Oct 28th 2008 6:41PM
hope its sorted out by the time i get my copy of the game
JAYCUB @ Oct 28th 2008 9:43PM

Servers still down here :( I miss the laughs of seeing the mass sackboys falling into pits of death.
rgoff31 @ Oct 29th 2008 1:17AM
I think the servers are down again. The game shouldn't get online unless you tell it to.
JoeSway @ Oct 29th 2008 1:48AM
I'm still crossing my fingers for the game to come back online... :)
rgoff31 @ Oct 29th 2008 8:52AM
DEV - Sam_Protagonist
I'm not going to paint any picture I don't believe is true - so right now, regular instability looks quite possible in the short term. We'll get to the point where the whole online side of the game is rock solid 24/7 but it's not going to happen immediately. As soon as there is a timeframe for this happening we'll let you know.

bluesky_v2.01 @ Oct 29th 2008 2:54PM
Stop complaining about servers being down. When the game started lagging, I just disabled my internet connexion and started making levels. Had a blast :)
It is rather odd though, I mean, did Media Molecule really expect people not to buy their game? Could be better prepared IMHO.
CS @ Oct 30th 2008 5:49AM
Still having server issues... I don't know how much longer I can go without sharing levels and playing with sacks with friends!!
