IGN has an interesting video, comparing the two distinct styles of
Resistance: Fall of Man and the upcoming
Resistance 2. It's been two years since Insomniac's PS3 launch title debuted, and it's very clear that the team has made significant improvements to the game engine. The single most noteworthy addition: color. Instead of the browns and grays that were so prevalant in the first game, we see a vibrant world of color in the second. Maybe it's a bit
too colorful. Watch the video, after the break.

R2 definitely looks better than the first one...but I'm still a little bit disappointed in the graphics. Some of the textures are just plain ugly.
Emyrs @ Oct 29th 2008 7:17PM
if you are talking about textures from the beta, Insomniac has already stated that the beta textures were reduced to make a smaller download for testers. the retail version should look much better, and judging by the video it looks to be true.
Jerses @ Oct 30th 2008 9:21AM
and will the frame rate and things like the grass will too be better? i hope so because when you walk you can see the grass growing with you lol.
Also!! did he just got fat?
PSN: John-Paul-Jones @ Oct 29th 2008 7:51PM
I hope so. Was that supposed to be Nathan Hale on the main menu of the Resistance 2 Beta? It looked so damn ugly.
Jerses @ Oct 29th 2008 7:57PM
fight aliens = gain weight
SimbaDogg @ Oct 29th 2008 10:21PM
to be honest...i see a difference in coloring, but not too much in terms of textures. i just feel like an idiot for watching another 2x2 inch comparo video of a videogame. i told myself i'd never do it again. this is the last time, full screen HD comparo, or nothing at all.
duckhunt8 @ Oct 30th 2008 11:04AM
Ugh, why does nobody understand Insomniac? They work on graphics LAST. After everything else is ready. Have you even seen some of the ACTUAL gameplay videos? Not the old builds. Not the beta build.
The game looks effin' beautiful.
UncleCheeto @ Oct 30th 2008 12:15PM
@ duckhunt8
Well before you start saying that people don't understand stuff...if you actually take the time to read some reviews you will find that ign even had some of the same complaints. The levels are huge and there is a lot going on...but some of the textures are pretty low resolution. Even the fire in the game looks like crap.
LJ @ Oct 29th 2008 7:02PM
Looks really good!
dabamf @ Oct 29th 2008 7:12PM
I went back and played Resistance a few weeks ago. The PS3's graphical abilities have definitely improved since this launch title! I don't mind the color.
Sora @ Oct 29th 2008 7:17PM
Wow, this is great for all you PS3 owners! R2 looks really, really cool.
Deadpool @ Oct 29th 2008 7:34PM
The colors..........THE COLORS! I'm tripping out man! 0_0
punkateer @ Oct 29th 2008 7:42PM
The beta is underwhelming (pauses for firestorm) I completely forgot how much of a circle jerk the R1 was online until I jumped into the beta. R2 officially was downgraded to rental before buying status after attempting the beta twice.
Hife @ Oct 29th 2008 10:50PM
Well it was upgraded from a "meh, I'll check this out when the price drops" to a launch day buy for me after playing the beta.
To each his own though.
kuhbillion @ Oct 29th 2008 8:08PM
R2 is a better game in every way - loving the 8-player co-op. And as for color, puh-leeze! far superior... i'm so tired of the washed-out, flat, monotone grayscale nonsense. color is way more immersive; not to mention that washed out ish is like so pre-2007.
ryan @ Oct 29th 2008 8:36PM
Yeah, games like Heavy Rain are soo pre-2007. Games totally don't consider mood when limiting their color pallet. It's all so....anti-immersive. *hi five*
iamkid @ Oct 29th 2008 8:59PM
but ryan, the difference is that heavy rain doesnt look like that through the entire game, even looking at the trailer, it only stays brown for the first bit, and at other spots, they colors look good
ryan @ Oct 29th 2008 9:11PM
And according to the ding-bat above me those parts of the game are not immersive because they lack color! You can't fault a game for a lack of color if that's what they are going for.
FIRST! ! ! @ Oct 30th 2008 12:54AM
And... according to the ding-bat above me, Heavy Rain is more immersive because it lacks color... but it doesn't. It's lighting that makes the game more immersive.
Look at the trailer in HD. The colors in the game are there, and they stand out pretty well. You can tell the color in her eyes, skin tone, and lips. The color in the wallpaper. Some pictures in the wall have some notecible colors. The red carpet is pretty... red. Blue jeans, red shirt underneath the jacket. I could go on, but you get my point.
The lighting in the game is what's going to make it immersive. Not the lack of color. In fact, it's doesn't even look like it has a limited color palet, or a washed out look.
ryan @ Oct 30th 2008 1:19AM
Monochrome lighting on various texture colors or just a pure monochrome texture pallet? It's a wash because in any case it leads to your game looking....monochromatic.
My point is that a monochrome tone can be used to create mood. Sure it's lighting and shadow, but is it a random color lighting? No, it's selected to push the appropriate story and gameplay. And in Heavy Rain's case it gives off a vintage feel for that section of the game which works well.
So, you cannot call off monochromatic color (textures or lighting) as something that's "soo pre-2007" like the OP said. It still can be used for great storytelling, like the Orange lighting in one of these Resistance 2 maps. It looks very evil and disturbing (in a good way).
PSN: Erdie @ Oct 29th 2008 8:30PM
I was actually quite impressed how great Bristol looked. You know, the super gray level :)
Darkage @ Oct 29th 2008 9:40PM
I live in Bristol, and I thought that the level looked nothing like here. Cheddar, on the other hand, looked very similar.
Eric @ Nov 4th 2008 7:22AM
about time games starting getting some color around here! The R2 beta is fantastic! Sad it ends this friday...but only monday until the real thing!
Slim Masta @ Oct 29th 2008 8:45PM
The beta was actually very good. No lag what so ever, consistent frame rates, and no drop out issues. The best beta I have ever played. This games put COD4 and SOCOm in the DUST! SOCOM is actually pretty bad, not amazing as I had hoped. The online for this is amazing. Very immersive and action packed. And for the first time in a long time, I had FUN on an online game. Something I never experienced in SOCOM, and very few times in COD4 (of lately).
Rodrigo @ Oct 29th 2008 8:49PM
i'm really not liking the graphics even thought some parts looks amazing.. at 1st i hated the new gameplay and i was pissed and disappointed but after putting time on the beta i started to like it and then love it... i'm resistance fan and i'm loving resistance 2 as much as i love resistance 1. (i wanted to see rachel in resistance 2 but i think ted said that she wasn't going to be in it :(, i thought that she was beginning to like hale :)...)
PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 29th 2008 9:14PM
I was really impressed with the beta ... coming along great ... just no time or money for the sequel =(
Mikee @ Oct 29th 2008 10:43PM
the art style works because it's not "too" colorful. It seems to be in the middle of realistic and cartoony and that is a welcome. Games like Team Fortress 2 have a cartoony/cell shaded art style because the art style works with the games theme. The art style that Resistance 2 has helps portray the dark times the game is about!
ocdog45 @ Oct 30th 2008 9:21AM
I never noticed how gray the first game was. 2 makes 1 look like crap!
Dehshizknight @ Oct 29th 2008 9:14PM
I, for one, don't think Resistance 2 is TOO colorful. The game has the perfect balance, just like Killzone 2 looks to have (Killzone 1, despite the resolution and framerate troubles, it was pretty at some moments; like the swamp level).
icunspall @ Oct 29th 2008 9:47PM
looking to get both resistance 2 and gears of war 2!!!
both gonna be awesome, IGN already gabe Resistance 2 a 9.5!!! But I don't think killzone 2 is gonna live up to the hype, and Heavy Rain looks really boring.
Bill @ Oct 29th 2008 9:35PM
Any one else think the sound is too quite for gun fire in R2? I really enjoyed the loud weaponry in R1 which made firefights seem more intense.
Ruben @ Oct 29th 2008 9:40PM
I dont understand the whole color debacle, even Gears 1 has "color" as you will in it. That "browny reddish" feel is more to display the world as dystopian. Same with Resistance 1, don't think people painted their buildings pink and blue all over Europe.
That being said, the color pallet is alot more vibrant in R2 but mainly due to what seems like richer blacks and whites and just a higher standard of graphics that are conveying that to our eyes.
j.howlett @ Oct 29th 2008 9:47PM
the color is good. i like the beta though it took some getting used to. i understand the reasoning behind the weapon limit but a pistol shouldn't take the place of a rifle. you should get it as a third permanent weapon.
Vincent @ Oct 29th 2008 10:25PM
I liked the art style from the first game, but yeah, I won't reject the colours either =)
Ogre722 @ Oct 29th 2008 10:58PM
I had my doubts about the true quality to the next game but now I'm convinced. Everyone called Killzone the "halo killer" but I think this is it. I have to hurry and finish the first game so that I can play this one.
Hotrod @ Oct 30th 2008 9:15AM
Nathan Hale is pure badass.
Jessie @ Oct 29th 2008 11:10PM
This game needs to come out already!!!!
Not a Fanboy, Just A Gamer @ Oct 29th 2008 11:19PM
I don't know, to me it seems like the color scheme changed but not so much the amount. Instead of grey's and brown they have the red and orange hues now. Either way, color change or no color change this is a game I am going to eventually play through. But I must say, if I can't have them both due to lack of funds right now, GOW2 gets my first $60 then this. That's just me and the order I'm looking forward to play both titles in.

as always. Tank like. Thank fuck you can hook up a M/KBd to the PS3, but seriously sony, stop using an FPS as your big killer app. Gears works great on consoles/gamepads because of it's third person perspective (as does resi evil 4 etc). ANY FPS on a console is dead to me compared to PC shooters. Sorry.
Lars @ Oct 30th 2008 4:30PM
I agree, K&M for the win. I usually avoid shooters on consoles unless they're tactical shooters (GRAW) or adventure shooters (Uncharted). But you have to concede that there are plenty of people who have an opposite opinion than us. Namely the people that made games like R:FoM and Halo a success.
So, I agree with not liking FPS's on console (unless it uses K&M), but I highly disagree with your sentiment of not even making these games. Why would you wish fans of this genre to not get what they want? Think of it this way: I love God of War, for example, and feel it's perfectly suited for consoles. I wouldn't want someone to say "Sony, stop making games like God of War!" So I won't say no to console FPS's either.
IHateBioshock @ Oct 30th 2008 2:37AM

"Gears" works great on consoles/gamepads because of it's third person perspective (resi evil 4 too). ANY FPS on a console is dead to me compared to PC shooters, they are just not made for it.
Popfrogs @ Oct 30th 2008 11:16AM
You have to be high dude. COD4 was first person and it won all kinds of awards on both consoles.
Although playing R2 with a mouse/kb would be pretty sweet.

is it just me or does anyone else miss the sound of the carbine in R:FoM? i think it sounds way better
Varone @ Oct 30th 2008 12:58PM
I live in the UK. It has an identical colour pallet to R1. Guess the US is just more colourful. Remember what happens when you get too much colour though people...
RAINBOWS!
Lars @ Oct 30th 2008 4:22PM
Ugh, I swear...
If it's not too brown, then it's too green, if it's neither of those then it's too colorful. If it's not too colorful then it's washed out. Waaah, waaah!
Babies.
