PSP is increasingly resembling its big brother, PS3.
Dissidia, PSP's upcoming
Final Fantasy-themed fighter from Square Enix, will feature "Data Install," an optional feature that will allow players to shorten load times by installing some key information onto the Memory Stick. Reading data off the flash drive is much faster than the UMD, and for those that can afford to sacrifice some space, this feature will be helpful. (Another game to take advantage of this feature:
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G)
Players can choose three different installs, to take as little as 245MB to as much as 528MB of data. Of course, for the shortlest load times possible, players in Japan will undoubtedly want to buy the game off the PlayStation Store and have the entire game on their Memory Stick.

I'd stop using CFW altogether if Sony offered all of the games as downloads from the store. The UMD spin is noisy and eats my battery. I love being able to silently plays games in bed at night while my wife is sleeping.
I still buy the games... I just rip 'em to iso so I can save on energy and noise.

I do the same thing. All my iso are legal with the exception that I downloaded the iso instead of messing around with ripping it. All of them are games I legally own though.
Technically, either way is a violation of the DMCA, but until the courts get into the 21st century, I'll continue this way because the games load so much faster and I don't have to worry about which memory stick my game save is on.
I am so sick of hearing the CFW=piracy idiots. They can't separate the two concepts in their minds. It's the difference between having the -ability- to commit a crime and actually committing it. Sony and others just assume people will commit the crime if they are capable of it. That's not 100% true.

It's not that we can't separate the two, it's the **FACT** that without CFW, piracy would be impossible. For those of us that enjoy our PSP's without needing hacks, getting rid of CFW means an end to piracy. Period. And that would guarantee us better third party support and probably lower software prices overall.
I'll trade your ability to play without the slight whirring noise for the chance to play more games for less money. ;-)

Pipe dream. Piracy is just as bad in Japan as the rest of the world, but PSP has tons of Japanese games. In fact, piracy on the DS is HUGE, and yet they have no issues with third party support."

Piracy is a drag on sales and support. Period. It's not up for debate. Maybe Sony loves Japan and hates the US (as several PSPfanboy regulars like to spout), so they're willing to put up with the piracy there and still make tons of games. If piracy ended over here, that would only make us more attractive to developers (maybe enough to overcome Sony's fictional "hate").
As for the DS, that is irrelevant. Why? Because the DS demographic is mostly kiddies and casual gamers. Sure, there is some piracy, but it pales in comparison to their sales. In contrast, the PSP crowd is more "savvy", and therefore more likely to pirate. The ratio of piracy to actual sales is MUCH higher for the PSP. (Look at the #1 torrents versus sales charts--PSP is tops in one and bottom in the other.)
Just because you can type doesn't mean you can think. ;-)

if the memory stick you used was 128 MB or lower the save data would be 64 KB but if you used any higher memory stick it would be 128 KB. I'm not sure if that actually improved load times

Given the price of memory cards these days, installs, whether mandatory or voluntary, are not that big of a deal. Personally, I'd rather have all my games on a memory card than UMD.
Now to sit back and wait, still, for a release date for North America :)

I don't want to buy a game then have to install anything. That's why I don't play computer games. Consoles are easy and only require that I put something in a slot and press a button. If the PSP starts relying on installs, then Sony will have lost a customer.
I have a lot of games that have gotten the worst complaints about load times (Every review of "Ys" mentioned the horrible load times), and yet I have never, ever noticed or been bothered by load times. The longest ones take a couple of seconds at most. Do gamers just have severe ADD, can anyone stand to be not entertained for more than half of a second?
