Activision predicts bigger PS3 growth than 360
Publishers need to tell their investors what platforms they think will succeed, and Activision CEO Mike Griffith did exactly that during the company's Q3 earnings conference call. According to Griffith, he believes the Xbox 360 will grow an additional 6-7 million units for the calendar year. However, he believes the PS3 will grow by 8 million. Sure, it's not a tremendous victory, but it shows that publishers are confident that Sony will chip away at Xbox 360's one year headstart in this console generation.
While this is good news for Sony, one can't help but be amazed by the incredible growth Nintendo will continue to experience. According to Griffith, another 15 million people will be added into the Wii family. No wonder Sony is so quick to jump on the bandwagon.

god news for the ps3 owners
pxpxp @ Nov 6th 2008 3:11PM
*good

I never thought of this before now, but aren't the 360 sales numbers tainted by people buying new ones after their old ones break, thus falsifying the number of total 360 owners?
Bolivar Baez @ Nov 6th 2008 3:30PM
Sales are sales. Anyways, that might as well increase the sales of PS3 too. A 360 owner might be inclined to buy a PS3 after their 360 fails.
reson8er @ Nov 6th 2008 3:28PM
Yeah, but the fact is that those poor saps are *still* buying a new system. So the numbers are valid.
My 360 is currently shutting down mid game and giving me 2 red lights, I WILL NOT be one of those to re-buy it.
SuperGayParade @ Nov 6th 2008 3:31PM
BRAVO! Too bad so many others were too attached to stand up against that exploitation.
ryan @ Nov 6th 2008 3:32PM
Depends on how they break.
If it's a system error, video card malfunction, that's a $99 fix. RRoD, free on the 3 year warranty, $99 after that I believe.
Death by car accident, house fire, angered children, console football, act of God, that's a new console sale. :P
AltCtrlPwn @ Nov 6th 2008 4:06PM

Yeah but with those prices, people would rather pay the $199 and get a brand new one instead of some refurb; I know people that have done this . . .
ryan @ Nov 6th 2008 4:26PM
Frankly if I have the choice to spend $99 on fixing a $399 Elite vs. buying a new Elite/(Arcade + 120gb) i'll gladly choose the former. Same goes with re-buying a new PS3 vs. fixing it and fixing my car instead of buying it all over again. :/
Blaze463 @ Nov 6th 2008 3:37PM
Why should we care about sales numbers? It has nothing to do with us.
Devin @ Nov 6th 2008 8:00PM
I don't want to call you an idiot, but am...
You do now that the total # of PS3's influences developers decisions on if/when/how they will bring their games to it.....so yes, PS3 sales do influence PS3 owners such as yourself....
Blaze463 @ Nov 9th 2008 10:19PM
We are not developers. Way to contradict yourself, buddy.
E @ Nov 6th 2008 3:34PM
PS3 got off to a rough start but this year has been awesome! Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, ... the list goes on. And PS3 has the most potential as opposed to the 360 hands down. Not dissin, it's just real.
SuperGayParade @ Nov 6th 2008 3:58PM
Ryan is right... GTA IV had an exclusive pop-in feature on the 360.
ryan @ Nov 6th 2008 4:26PM
Which is unfortunately taken out once you install the disc onto the 360 hard drive. Too bad 360 xbot owners! PS3 ftw!!
Devin @ Nov 6th 2008 7:58PM
ryan,
I would like to see some #'s on how many 360 owners can actually use that feature...just saying since most people I now who one have very little space on their 20GB HDD's.....
ryan @ Nov 8th 2008 2:02PM
Reserving space for one game on a 20gb is nothing really. If that's the main game you are playing that is.
John @ Nov 6th 2008 3:49PM
Who cares? Do you really need your daily pep talk? Both systems are good. Deal with it.
Mattchewie @ Nov 6th 2008 4:46PM
I really don't how nintendo can sell so many units. The consoles not crap but its not that great. Maybe I'm just not casual enough but if it wasn't for my girlfriend, that system would of been sold A LONG TIME AGO.
ryan @ Nov 6th 2008 4:52PM
Well, there's your answer: Girlfriends, the new casual gamer market that is eating it up. Keep her happy and you'll be happy too...Just don't be surprised if you catch her in bed with Miyamoto...J/k of course. :P
iamkid @ Nov 6th 2008 7:48PM
i dont get how theyre still selling them either, but i do like one thing about them still selling: i can go buy one early december, go home, put it on ebay, sell it in a few days, and make 100+ profit :D
nastysquar3d @ Nov 7th 2008 10:02AM
I bought my Wii on launch night and was fully prepared to own ONLY that system this generation. Lack of horsepower doesn't bother me, as long as the games are engaging and fun.
Unfortunately, the potential for the system was squandered and there are only a few "gems" on the system. Which is why I also got a PS3
That being said my g/f will play Wii with me for hours (Dr. Mario, Tetris Party) and she won't touch the PS3 with a ten foot pole unless it's to watch a movie.
That alone, is enough reason to keep my Wii. Plus I love Zelda and Metroid.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 6th 2008 4:26PM
So, NEXT year is gonna be the "year of the PS3"?
Umm, lol!
ryan @ Nov 6th 2008 4:36PM
Should also be the year of "What's next on the 360?"
...and that's not a biased PS3fanboy comment either. What really is the next big thing for the 360 beyond Alan Wake (which I frankly still am not too enthused about) and two Halo drops (in spring and one fall)?
Popfrogs @ Nov 6th 2008 7:10PM
They're still working on Alan Wake? I checked the site last month and the newest clips they had were from January. It's like they just gave up on it.
KingOfGods @ Nov 7th 2008 12:11PM
honestly Ryan....a lot of the PS3 fanboys said the same thing after '07 when Halo was on the way, "what next after Halo, '08 is the year of the PS3...blah blah blah"
The fact is 360 is having a really big year with a lot of great exclusives and multiplat games and depending on who you ask, something similar can be said about the PS3.
I am an owner of both consoles and I can honestly say that I have been playing my PS3 more now than I ever have since got it a month or two after launch, but it still fails in comparison to the time I spend on 360. I'm Still very disappointed with the PS3 in general. Maybe that's because I owned the 360 first but Sony is continuing to play catch up to Microsoft in terms of features on their game console and will be doing so for the rest of it's life cycle....and please don't come with the failure rates or the RROD. The PS2 had a big problem but that was still a great console to own....well, until xbox live came out that is ;)
Sorry if its a double or triple post. I always have a prob on this site. It tells me an email was sent even though I am using my log on credentials and I never receive an email.

sinai @ Nov 6th 2008 5:25PM
i dont know if i would call this a victory, i mean 360 already has saturated the market, it only makes sense that the new kid in town sell more than the established base. and considering the estimate, it wont be by very much at all.
Ty @ Nov 6th 2008 6:35PM
Well thats good to hear from them. Anyway, its game devs and publishers that make consoles successful in the long run. Here's to hoping we see, Guitar Hero XXVIII and Space of StarCraft on the PS3.
Overgauss @ Nov 6th 2008 6:52PM
As for the unjustified sales it helps if you think like this...
Dumb spreads like creamy whipped room temperature peanut butter.
Smart spreads like butter directly out of the refrigerator, a little hard at first, however it comes with more applications.
anda @ Nov 7th 2008 12:21AM
Just wait n' see..
Nate the Prophet @ Nov 7th 2008 9:06AM
So someone tell Blizz to release Starcraft 2 on the PS3 then!
