Holding out on getting MGS4? Then play the demo

If you find yourself in the latter category and haven't tried the game out yet but want to, the demo that's available on the Japanese PS Store should give a taste of Snake's last adventure. The 1.4GB download can only be grabbed off the Japanese PS Store (so far, since the other regions have not updated yet); so make sure you've got an appropriate account.

Great, but I dont think you need to play the demo to buy a Metal Gear game.
OneMale @ Nov 6th 2008 6:09PM
Best First comment ever.

thanks bro
Brian @ Nov 6th 2008 11:14AM
I know I am crazy but.... didn't like it much.
It's a shame there isn't a site or something that I could put it on so somebody could get a bit of use out of it. No, I don't want to sell it but do want to give it away.
Morbo- (PSN: ummfada) @ Nov 6th 2008 11:20AM
wow, you sir are and idiot :'(
Nick @ Nov 6th 2008 11:50AM
You can give it to me, i've been wanting to play it. :)

Jez @ Nov 6th 2008 11:51AM
He's not an idiot or a fanboy just because he didn't like a game that you did "sir." I happen to agree that although MGS2 was my favourite PS2 game by far I haven't even completed Guns of the Patriots despite buying it on launch day.
Jez @ Nov 6th 2008 11:54AM
...unless you mean he's an idiot for not wanting to sell it because he'd rather give it away in which case I can understand.
I also realise the comment I replied to has no reference to "fanboy" as that was a comment further down the page
Brian @ Nov 6th 2008 11:58AM
Yes I am an idiot. Never afraid to admit it.
Give away because I don't need the money, I spent it already so won't miss it.
Nick, I will email you for your address and hopefully you can get some enjoyment out of it.

I've been wanting to play the game for a while now, but I've been turned off by all the people saying its 95% cut scenes and 5% gameplay.
collegekid13 @ Nov 6th 2008 11:23AM
let me correct that figure. 85% cut scenes. 10% installs. 5 % gameplay
JohnHype @ Nov 6th 2008 11:30AM
Don't listen to them. The game is the best game I've ever played. While the cutscenes are very watchable, they didn't detract from the fun of the gameplay whatsoever. Get this game, stop listening to fanboys.
Nick @ Nov 6th 2008 11:50AM
Yeah there are a lot of cutscenes, but the Metal Gear story is an incredible one. MGS4 had just a little more cutscenes then the other 3 games, it's what the fans expect, and what we want.
Tez @ Nov 6th 2008 3:14PM
Let's get serious. It's about 65% cutscenes.
Chester Pape @ Nov 6th 2008 4:25PM
It is not so much that there is a high percentage of cut scenes but that some of them are ridiculously long, especially as you get near the end of the game. If you need to pause a cut scene for a pee break then it's too long.

j.howlett @ Nov 6th 2008 11:17AM
i'd get the demo if it showed up in the US even though i already have the game. i remember playing the first mgs demo on ps1 a bunch of times
heypaul @ Nov 6th 2008 11:57AM
The fact that there's a demo says to me that the team Kojima pieced together for this game hasn't entirely disbanded - that Konami's telling them to keep doing what they can to squeeze more profit out of thi game. A demo is one way to further market a game, another would be... TROPHIES! They could bring in a whole new slew of trophy "enthusiasts" who were on the fence about the game previously. Wouldn't be too shabby for those of us who already bought the game either.
PSN: John-Paul-Jones @ Nov 6th 2008 12:00PM
Same here. I would download the demo if it showed up on the North American PSN Store just to show how much of a Metal Gear fan I am. =P
By the way, did you take your username from Wolverine's real name, James Howlett?
j.howlett @ Nov 6th 2008 1:46PM
yeah bub
Mathias @ Nov 6th 2008 11:21AM
Thanks for the info, I am downloading the demo now, and looking forward to try it:)
Evan @ Nov 6th 2008 11:28AM
I've been unable to sign up for a Japanese account (U.K. and HongKong were no trouble) because I can't get it to accept a Japanese address. I've entered a real Japanese postal code, but I don't know what to set the drop-down box to. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Check out the 10th picture in the guide here:

It's the one with a symbol that looks like a ß
Evan @ Nov 6th 2008 8:03PM
Thank you Toby, that worked.
Marcos @ Nov 6th 2008 11:38AM
I don't think there's still people that haven't played mgs4. I mean, every ps3 user should have it... lol
Dan Rabot @ Nov 6th 2008 11:42AM
Everyone should have this game anyway, even if only for MGO!
I thought they said (ages ago) they were releasing MGO as a stand alone pack?? That would be nice and could avoid keeping that 5GB data file on my PS3's HDD.
Gervin @ Nov 6th 2008 1:07PM
How good is MG-online, really. I've not tried yet. Is run-n-gun craziness of MOD4 (which I hate), or is there some actual strategy. (I'm a big fan of Socom series online, as clans that used real strategy won the most).
lobotomies4free @ Nov 6th 2008 2:28PM
Get it Gervin
Yes it is strategic like socom (much better than confrontation too IMO). Kinda can't believe it could stop you from buying it tho
Dan Rabot @ Nov 7th 2008 7:51AM
Yeah it's very precise movement wise, teamplay is a MASSIVE part of it. The whole connecting with your team and seeing them through walls (SOP) really makes it a team game. The Survival at the weekends brings a new level of team building.
Run-and-gun doesn't really work in MGO, you can get the odd kill but you won't last long. You need to play as a team and at the least go round in groups.
Trust me, you want to log on and join us, once you're past the ballache of registering it's the top online shooter so far in my book.
DeathroW @ Nov 6th 2008 11:43AM
More like 40% cutscenes, 60% gameplay.
ThePlake0815 @ Nov 6th 2008 11:52AM
exactly! The Best game ever, and as usual, even that i have the normal game, i will still buy the expanded version (like i did with Substance and subsistance) once it's out... MGS-fanboyism rules XD
DeathroW @ Nov 6th 2008 1:00PM
Yeah, mgs - best game series, ever.
jason @ Nov 6th 2008 11:55AM
if they do re-release MGS4, I would assume that the extra content would also be available as add-on DLC.
Of course Konami definitely doesn't follow the norm - considering the whole MGO sign-up process and separate Konami store. So I'm not holding my breath on DLC.
Gervin @ Nov 6th 2008 12:27PM
I'm disappointed in the game. 1st play through, I thought it was the shizznit. Couldn't wait to play through again.
Now on second play through... bored!
GErvy
Ghaleon @ Nov 6th 2008 12:29PM
Don't forget MG1 and MG2 :(
Gervin @ Nov 6th 2008 1:04PM
Hey, at least those didn't cost $60.
What's ironic, is I'm enjoying playing through the NES version right now.
mozz @ Nov 6th 2008 1:00PM
You can download it on the EU store now it's been updated, so I imagine it will be available later on the US store also.
Jake @ Nov 6th 2008 12:59PM
oooo i got all excited then, mgs4 was the first mgs i ever played, i played a demo for 2 way back in the day i didnt really like it, and until i read the last few comments i thought you meant they were remaking the mgs game's and releasing them for ps3
would be well up for that
swotboy2000 @ Nov 6th 2008 1:36PM
Tetralogy? Quadrilogy!
Fane @ Nov 7th 2008 7:49AM
It's tetralogy; "logos" is Greek, so the first element should be Greek as well.
superchriswebsite1 @ Nov 6th 2008 2:20PM
the demo is already up on the aussie store
gamerkid707 @ Nov 6th 2008 4:21PM
Im a 360 fanboy an i don't think cut scenes are bad. Your just jealous it was a ps3 exclusive.
vanquish @ Nov 7th 2008 4:50AM
on the aus store you say, then I can download it, if only to see if the graphics are as good as everyone says they are.
The problem with having 3 hours worth of cutscenes in a game, is that the story has to be good, really good.
MGS4 is a bit too convulted and silly (eg amptutated arms taking over people etc. and whats with the monkeys) to be taken seriously.
I'm sure the japanese love the story though.
But hey if the demo has food gameplay I might get it.
Junction @ Nov 7th 2008 12:03PM
The incremental installation bouts and obligatory cutscene bonanzas within MGS4 are fatal for the replay value. Quick session with the mecha-bots by means of a convenient save file? 3 minute install... Chapter finished? Prepare to run the cutscene-skipping obstacle course of two to three cutscenes.
MGS4 is also way too short, plus the cutscenes aren't that great -- they have lighting issues, which casts a grid-like structure on the screen.
