Konami financial results show incredible reliance on PlayStation

2008 looks no different, as PS3 now represents 38% of Konami's overall sales (thanks, Metal Gear Solid 4!). The PlayStation brand accounts for a whopping 67% of sales for the Japanese publisher.
Without MGS4 in the company portfolio, the numbers may skew a bit differently. However, it's important to note that Konami seems to be struggling in getting a key audience on non-Sony platforms. Xbox 360 is home to most of Konami's multiplatform efforts, and that's yielded quite an insignificant return. We're surprised by the success they've found on PSP, especially in comparison to the DS figures. So long as PlayStation can offer these kinds of numbers, Konami may continue being one of Sony's greatest partners.

well... for one, sony rhymes with konami.
Mr. Joe @ Nov 6th 2008 4:51PM
i thought it was pronounced konami, like rhymes with salami.
salami does not rhyme with sony.
komrad @ Nov 6th 2008 4:55PM
only if you say it out loud.
Turd @ Nov 6th 2008 5:27PM
It's not just Konami, PS3 is the more profitable platform, and it's where the industry is heading. 360 is where the industry WAS...

EA
In our previous story, we talked about how the PS3 is EA’s new bread-winner in terms of bringing home the bacon. According to EA’s previous financial statement, the PS3 accounted for about 17% of total revenue in comparison to the Xbox 360’s 10%. That is quite significant when considering that EA is the largest third party video game publisher in the world.
Namco Bandai
Namco Bandai is the largest third party publisher in Japan. According to the publisher’s recent financial statement, the PS3 currently moved approximately 57% more software than it’s direct competitor, the Xbox 360. Namco Bandai is sort of the EA of Japan, considering the amount of revenue it generates from software.
Konami
Konami is one of the top three publishers in Japan in terms of revenue. With the recent release of Metal Gear Solid 4, it is not all that surprising that the PS3 would have a larger piece of the pie. However, according to Konami’s recent financial statements, the PS3 accounted for a whopping 57.3% of the sales this past quarter, while the Xbox 360 accounted for only 2.6%. This changed from last year, when the Xbox 360 brought in more sales compared to the PS3.
UbiSoft
UbiSoft is considered to be one of the top three publishers in all of Europe. According to UbiSoft’s half year financial report (6 months 2008/09), the PS3 accounted for about 20% of the software sales compared to the Xbox 360’s 14%. Considering UbiSoft’s presence in Europe, this is quite a significant turn of event.

LOL. Where are all these ps3 fans buying games? I thought the Ps3 had no games...Nice one Turd :D
NineT9mustang @ Nov 7th 2008 10:16PM
great comment turd, thanks :) +
Jimiisama @ Nov 8th 2008 4:08PM
Actually turd, I think it has more to do with he fact that most of their games are on Sony systems.
Batzi @ Nov 6th 2008 4:15PM
Konami, Kojima and MGS4 for the WIN! Now bring on MGS5.
reson8er @ Nov 6th 2008 4:17PM
Or a new Zone of Enders in the meantime.
Rocks @ Nov 6th 2008 4:14PM
That is very true.. Sony does rhyme with Konami.. I never thought of it that way... brb. telling my neighbors.
reson8er @ Nov 6th 2008 4:20PM
Well I feel that since these figures tell the tale, its high time Konami started putting the 360 migrated franchises on PS3 as well.
Brodie-san @ Nov 6th 2008 4:31PM
Am I missing something?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Konami_games
What mythical 360 franchises do you speak of?
Are you really smarting that Bomberman Act Zero never made it to the PS3?
JayVe @ Nov 6th 2008 4:53PM
Just the opposite.
If people are buying Konami's software, but that software is only available to PS3 owners, Konami would make MORE money if they could sell the software people WANT (MGS4) on MORE platforms.
If people are already shunning Bomberman Zero on the 360, bringing it to the PS3 will amount to NOTHING.
JayVe @ Nov 6th 2008 5:06PM
Thanks Brodie-san for the great list of Konami games. Yeah, they make nothing good for the 360, and then wonder why they don't sell a lot of 360 games.
Their Wii lineup has also been really weak.
DeathroW @ Nov 6th 2008 4:20PM
Another reason for konami to stay loyal to sony and not port mgs4 over to the 360. Those mgs4 figures are better than the original gears of war was at at the same point in its life, that is a great achievement for a metal gear solid game, and a very good achievement for a playstation 3 exclusive.
Good job konami, can we continue this chain? You give us some love by providing one of the best games made to date and we buy it up, its your turn again! I'd love for some extra fun little one player modes on the game like on mgs3.
JayVe @ Nov 6th 2008 5:11PM
Riiight. Cause it is good for Konami to only sell its console to PS3 owners instead of PS3 owners AND 360 owners?
It is in Konami's best interest to take its popular franchises and make them available to everyone, rather than limiting access to just PS3 owners.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for Sony that Konami decided to keep MGS exclusive, but being happy for Sony does not mean it is the best decision for Konami, or for gamers in general. My perspective is much larger than just Sony.
Popfrogs @ Nov 7th 2008 12:09PM
@JayVe: Slow day on X360Fanboy?
By the way, your statement "Riiight. Cause it is good for Konami to only sell its console to PS3 owners" is kinda retarded. Konami doesn't sell consoles.
Jimiisama @ Nov 8th 2008 4:13PM
Good job Popfrogs, you are THE MASTER at ad hominem!
adolson @ Nov 6th 2008 4:26PM
Should be interesting to see how the figures skew once MGS4 releases for 360.
strike @ Nov 6th 2008 4:45PM
good thing it won't, eh?
kentuckyfried @ Nov 6th 2008 4:46PM
Keep dreaming.
Hey, maybe it'll run as well as that MGS2 port that came out for the Xbox awhile ago. ;)
Jimiisama @ Nov 8th 2008 4:12PM
Way to downvote someone just for mentioning the 360. Really shows your maturity.
adolson @ Nov 8th 2008 8:37PM
No shit... I don't even own a 360, and I run a PlayStation-only site... But yet I get modded down because I mention what we all know is going to happen. Just because some people don't want to believe it's going to, doesn't mean it won't.

MBO @ Nov 6th 2008 6:21PM
wth is that other section on that pie chart?
Brad @ Nov 6th 2008 7:00PM
Arcade?
Unnxandros @ Nov 7th 2008 12:12PM
The "other" section is... cellphones and crap
iamkid @ Nov 6th 2008 7:50PM
'07: ps3: 1%
i just kinda loled at that for some reason.
iamkid @ Nov 6th 2008 7:51PM
also lol that the 360 only went up 2% in a year, compared to the ps3 37% increase
Jimiisama @ Nov 8th 2008 4:15PM
I'm sure that has nothing to do with MGS4; now tell me what game they put on 360 to increase their income from that given console? I'm pretty sure that 3% income from 360 is just Virtual Console games if anything.
Jimiisama @ Nov 8th 2008 4:16PM
Or Live Arcade or whatever they call it.
Tay @ Nov 12th 2008 12:09AM
I'm almost certain that the majority of 3% increase is from Castlevania SOTN for Live Arcade. SOTN released for Live Arcade almost exactly the same time as the 07 chart was made. Me being one of those contributors bought SOTN along with many of my friends and it was one of the most played Live Arcade titles. And ya Konami does release shit on the 360 unless you like DDR. I've never even seen DDR for sale in a store now that I think of it...
Lard @ Nov 6th 2008 9:31PM
Too bad Konami are this gen's Sega and seem determined to completely ruin every franchise they have.
JayVe @ Nov 7th 2008 2:00AM
For the jury, I hold up evidence A: Bomberman Zero
Jimiisama @ Nov 8th 2008 4:17PM
Jayve, Bomberman is a Hudson series. It's not even Konami's to ruin.
lockecole @ Nov 6th 2008 10:26PM
"Konami is a publisher of games on every platform." Yeah, but the majority of their good games is only on Sony platforms. That pie just shows the obvious.
korwyn @ Nov 11th 2008 7:55PM
this is pretty obvious.
people who can afford a PS3 would have a little more power to buy games than 360 gamers.
I have been working in many different restaurants, and people who go to an upscale restaurant, which offer more expensive food, would more likely tip more than people who go into a cheap food place.
we all can afford $599 console, $60 games would not really hurt us that badly, would it? Compare to those who chose a cheaper console, they might have to consider a little more before they buy any $60 games.
Not to mention there're modded 360 out there where people don't need to buy copyright games any more. Microsoft might think they have a larger fan base, but there are many that buy the 360 just because they can buy cheap illegel copy games instead of spending a lot of money on a copyright one. This wouldn't really give the developers any benefit, would it?
Jimiisama @ Nov 8th 2008 4:21PM
Or it might just have to do with the fact that most Konami games are on Sony consoles. During the previous generation Konami made most of their games for PS2, and PS2 seems to have remained their top money-maker until recently. The recent shift to PS3 being the top money maker is most likely due to MGS4, another exclusive Sony-console game. PS3 goes from 1 to 37% for a single exclusive game; I don't think it's completely fair to say that this shows that the PS3 makes more money when the game is exclusive.
Fane @ Nov 7th 2008 1:58AM
Andrew, 38%+18%+11%= 67% not 58%.
Fane @ Nov 7th 2008 2:00AM
Dammit. My bad. I read the article wrong. Idiot.
anda @ Nov 7th 2008 11:37AM
Great news :D
dean @ Nov 7th 2008 6:56PM
