Sony gets the adhocParty beta started in Japan
The beta for adhocParty, a Japanese service that allows PSP games with local AdHoc play to now function over the internet via the PS3, was launched today. The service currently only works with Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, but Phantasy Star Portable is next in line. Those of you with access to a PS3 and the Japanese PSN can download the application now -- according to PSPHyper, it works in the US. A video of how it works, after the jump.

But how does it work? Will the games themselves have to support this, or is it more that it just extends the range of the PSP's local capabilities to a much wider range?
If it's the former, then you can't play older games with it, and that's sad.

It acts like xlink kai, and old games will/do work
.P@BsLpKn @ Nov 6th 2008 10:08PM
so its between using a free service...or buy a PS3....mmmm...tough choice LOL
aj @ Nov 7th 2008 1:15AM
I had never heard of xlink kai until now. Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try that out.

Service works with a lot more than MHP2ndG as of the moment
Dreadhead541 @ Nov 6th 2008 5:35PM
really? Could you name a few? I really want to test this out
DarkJestic @ Nov 7th 2008 2:33AM
Final Fantasy Tactics and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Ad-hoc modes works fine for me. Only FFT is little hard to setup up.

holy shit!!! this is awesome!!! kewl!!! an american realease of this awesome feature??? hope it works with... i really don't know. maybe rpgs. syphon filter already has online so this is sort of useless. but if midnight club gets online with ps3, then this is going to be useful!!!
lakaihigh @ Nov 7th 2008 10:02AM
please bring this stateside!!! I have quite a few ad-hoc only titles that I would love to take online. this is sooo sick. on a side note, does any1 else here think those sony bluetooth mics looked massive on those Japanese boys heads?

Im confused. So adhoc can go infrastructure through the ps3 using this ap? kinda confused.
Gurbinder @ Nov 6th 2008 5:46PM
nvm i think i got the rough outline by watching the video. This might give ps3's sales boost by acouple thousand in japan.
myuusmeow @ Nov 6th 2008 5:49PM
If PS3 prices get low enough I just might get one for this and as a Blu Ray player. I was always disappointed with the number of good online titles on the PSP.
FeaturePreacher @ Nov 6th 2008 5:54PM
Hopefully this will work with ps1 games that have a multiplayer component to them such as MK3. Anyone know if you can use ad hoc party with remote play? Anyone know how to use the multiplayer parts of multiplayer ps1 titles on the psp?
Phil S. @ Nov 6th 2008 6:04PM
To the best of my knowledge the MP parts of the original PS games available were never meant to work.
It says so right there on the info screen on the PS store.
I doubt that this app for the PS3 would change that.
bryan @ Nov 6th 2008 7:23PM
eh this means nothing to me as i dont plan on getting a ps3. wish this site would post about things other then firmware, ps store updates and final fantasy. i rember when they would talk about products you could buy or apps worth downloading. now its mostly which games are on sale or whats going on in japan land.
Kspraydad @ Nov 6th 2008 8:52PM
Well...we happen to own a handheld whose North American support is weak at best. Take a look at the release calendar...not much to see that is 'western'.
Can't write about what doesn't exist.
aj @ Nov 7th 2008 1:17AM
Sad, but true.
I do wish Sony would stop trying to use the PSP to sell PS3's, though. It's a little bit insulting to buy a 200$ thing, a few games, and then be told that it could all be so much better if only you bought another expensive thing. Ugh. I'm sure PS3 owners may also feel the same way about the PSP.
Nezrou @ Nov 7th 2008 11:14AM
I wonder which company treats it's clients worse. Sony trying to sell more PS3s using success of PSP or Nintendo making a handheld aimed mainly for casual gamers and kids changing their biggest franchises like Zelda PH and NSMB into casual friendly, that is too boring and disapointing for normal gamers, then when PSP starts selling better announcing games for hardcore players stating that they care for them now.
I'm not a fanboy of Sony, I just want to notice that every company tries to suck as much money from their clients as they can.
Jayson @ Nov 6th 2008 11:34PM
it suxs that u have to have a ps3 to use the program though
mindshed @ Nov 6th 2008 9:38PM
Time to create a Japanese PSN account.
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Nov 6th 2008 11:12PM
I can't wait for the full release in the US.
-Too bad my WLAN on my PSP doesn't work properly anymore. SIGH. :(
Dreadhead541 @ Nov 6th 2008 11:42PM
will this work if your ps3 is on wi-fi? Or does it have to be a wired connection? I keep getting a message that says something about LAN.
Copland @ Nov 7th 2008 8:09AM
Your PS3 has to be directly cable connected using the LAN port on your PS3. The Wi-Fi connection will be used by the PSP.
BTW, 20GB Models which don't have a Wi-Fi capability, aren't compatible with this Adhoc Party Service.
