VGA 08: The PlayStation-exclusive nominees are ...

Spike TV's 2008 Video Game Awards will be kicking off next month and the nominees and categories have all been set in place. Among the PlayStation-centric titles, Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet lead the pack and have earned five nominations each. Both titles are going head-to-head in such categories as: Game of the Year, Best Original Score and Best Graphics. LBP is also vying for Best Soundtrack, while MGS4 is looking to score Best Action-Adventure Game. Both titles, along with Grand Theft Auto IV and Resistance 2 will be fighting it out for Best PlayStation 3 title.

Resistance 2 comes in third with three nominations for Best Multiplayer, Best Shooter and the aforementioned category. Other nominees include: SingStar - Best Music Game; Media Molecule - Studio of the Year; and PixelJunk Eden - Best Independent Game. God of War: Chains of Olympus and Patapon have been nominated for Best Handheld Game.

Your kidding me right?
I'm not doubting R2's greatness but MGS4 is probably the best game i have played in a long time.
- Immersive
- Good Plot / Storyline
- Replay Value
- Amazing Graphics and AI

LBP is just a kiddo game and shouldn't be taken into account.. ever.

I do agree that MGS4 would probably win GoTY from me, though. It was truly amazing. One of the best games I ever played.

While I definitely agree with your choice, the original Gears of War absolutely owned the VGAs. It seems likely Gears2 will probably do the same.

I'm not a huge fan of Gears, at all - I'm actually pretty anti-Gears, but I'm also a realist and I know that game has serious legs. For instance, within the past month Resistance 2, LBP, Valkyria Chronicles, Bioshock and Fallout 3 have all been released on PS3... but last weekend half of the staff at *PS3Fanboy* was playing Gears 2.

Anyway, I think I'll be rooting for Fallout 3 or Metal Gear Solid 4.

little kids dont have the patience, knowledge OR concentration to create a level.

cameron, u probably no nothing about lbp apart from the fact that there are sackboys in it.

Haha I'm actually starting to play it right now.

It's fun so far and the cinematics are frickin' TOP NOTCH.

But most reviews (along with my view with my limited play) seem to be annoyed with just mashing X throughout the whole game.

Anyway, you probably wanna shout that at the brothers over at the PSPF site =P.

I liked Final Fantasy more than God of War. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Little Big Planet is a tough choice.

MGS4 deserves best soundtrack more than LBP, the soundtrack in MGS games has always been amazing, mgs4 was no exception.

LBP has very realistic renderings of fabric and cardboard objects. It even automatically adds stitching to fabric objects that you create. Some scenes look like a real camcorder's recording of actual paper-craft and fabric pupets.

MGS4 is typical uncanny-valley fair. At no time can it's renderings confused for real film of real actors.

So, which is more impressive: The game that tries to do less but does it near-perfectly, or the game that tries to do more but doesn't quite succeed?

I'm really rather hoping that GTA IV doesn't become game of the year. It may be good, but overall it was a disapointment in my books. Where was the loonacy of the previous games. If it does win, it'll just show the media's idioicy towards heavily hyped games. Looking at what these people want, for us, its either MGS4 or LittleBigPlanet.

LBP for sure. MGS4 is great, to be sure, but it's not for everyone. Having said that, neither is LBP, but it has more of an appeal to everyone while not neglecting the core audience at all, and the precedents it has set for this generation of gaming will go down in the history books of gaming as a truly monumental moment.

Where is Grand Turismo 5 ans best racing game of the year???

Also LBP is a great game and I love it but MGS4 had so much to live up to and for being the 4 game in a series it delivered and exceeded on every aspect that many games have not been able to, example GTA4. LBP is a great game but GOTY, no yet, but it can have the #2 spot.. =)
