Get across the ocean to Australia you silly Yggdra Union. *rolls eyes*
Nate @ Nov 17th 2008 8:54AM
Haven't played Yggdra Union, but $10 seems worth it for R-Type Command. I sort of regret paying more for it, though. The main problem being that there's pretty much zero story (what story there is - earth defenders fighting off alien invaders, is told in "captain's log" style text between fights, which mainly consist of the captain saying "oops, more aliens to fight!"). The battles are good and seem to be well balanced, but they all end up feeling pretty much the same. I stopped playing a third of the way through because there just wasn't anything new to see, and with no real story to unfold, there was nothing to push me to play more.
Still, I did enjoy the time I did spend playing it, and $10 is probably about right.

how on earth do you pronounce Yggdra??
mindshed @ Nov 17th 2008 1:55PM
IG-DRUH
They pronounce it in game :P
I just picked up Yggdra and I keep dying. Either I don't understand the game well, or it's way harder than your average rpg.
chimaera9 @ Nov 17th 2008 2:43PM
Yggdra is a challenging RPG, but you have to manage the cards well to succeed. Also, as you get into the game, you have more options in battle. Keep in mind the rock-paper-scissors aspect of the game. If you keep dying in battle, it may because you are allowing the wrong match-ups to occur. The rogues have axes, which are great against the lancers. The lancers are great against swords, and swords are great against axes.
I bought this at full price a couple months ago--wish I'd waited for the price cut. Oh well, it's a fun game. One VERY important thing to remember is that, in the menu, there is a "Suspend" feature. That means you can save the game, and it allows you to do it at any point. I almost gave up on the game until I realized that, because otherwise, you have to get through 2 or 3 battles before a save option arrives!
mindshed @ Nov 17th 2008 2:50PM
Ahhh, that's the suspend people were talking about. I thought they were talking about putting the psp in suspend mode, and I tried that, and I was like, "this doesn't create a save point!" :P I kept battling through the same hour long session only to die over and over at the same point, it was annoying.
Also, I think one problem is that I try to line up my guys to form a union, but then I get those weapon mismatches on the second or third battle. Is it better to only use 1 guy if his weapon is the good match rather than trying to line up 3 guys and getting bad mismatches down the line?
chimaera9 @ Nov 17th 2008 4:59PM
Hey mindshed,
Yeah, that Suspend feature was a game-making feature for me, otherwise I would have stopped playing the game because I couldn't make it through all the battles to a save point, either.
I do highly recommend making unions, but the trick is that you have to position the right weapon type to be the head of the union. So, say you are attacking the lancers--you don't want the Yggrda girl to be the one to attack head-on because she uses swords and she'll get slaughtered. You want the rogue with the axes at the head, then line up the others in the correct union pattern. What happens, is you'll tear them up with the axe, but they'll still have some hp. left. Then it will roll over to the next group in your union (which could be lancers or swords.) They'll be weakened, so your chances of defeating them are better. I'd put swords as the last in the union line. You'll probably be able to take them out after they've faced everyone in your union, and that's just on on turn! The benefit in having every weapon type in a union is that, if the enemy attacks you during his turn, he has to face everyone in your union. He might be an axe wielder, so when he moves on through the union fight to the swords, they'll slaugther him.
Later on, you'll get to use battle magic during the fights, and that REALLY adds a new element of strategy and card selection. The fights get much more interesting. The game ramps up in difficulty, but they sort-of have an ongoing tutorial that introduces you to the new strategy elements over time. Have fun!

Not sure I know what you're talking about, aj. Yggdra has gotten good reviews, and another of their latest games for the Ps2 and Wii has gotten really good reviews overall--it's called Dokapon Kingdom. I have to say it's one of the best party games I've bought, but you can totally tell which of the reviewers didn't play Dokapon much, because those that spent more than 30 minutes on it would have had all their gripes answered (or they are just impatient gamers who can't appreciate Atlus's turn-based playstyle in games.) It is a hilarious game and overflowing with creativity and unpredictable ideas. IGN game it 8, Gamesone 8.4, Gamersplatform 9/10. Check out my review of it on Gamestop's site. In my opinion, Atlus has some great offerings lately!

Oops, sorry, somehow I hit "reply" to your post, Whiteshield--I meant it for aj below.
MATT @ Nov 17th 2008 7:10PM
So I've been playing the Japanese Yggdra demo and the game really has a visceral momentum. It's just battle after battle after battle after battle -- well, part of the swiftness could be from the fact that I'm forced to skip all the Kanji writing and Japanese voices during the story scenes.
But I can't get over how swift it all feels -- a real freshness to the genre.
Just realized that even if it turns out to be not my thing, I could probably sell it on eBay for more than $20, even used.
Okay. Now I'm just thinking out loud. You're not even reading anymore and I don't blame you.
aj @ Nov 18th 2008 3:45AM
I don't know, Atlus seems to be losing it's magic touch. No one wanted to touch many of their latest games with a 10 foot pole.

Sounds good. I'll give Yggdra Union a try. Thanks.
R @ Nov 22nd 2008 9:50AM
Thanks, PSPfanboy staff and PSPfanboys; I just ordered both «Yggdra Union» and «Dokapon Kingdom» based on the tips; they've been on my WishList for waaaay too long. Now if only «Neverland Card Battles» and «Mytran Wars» would follow suit! $20 is the sw33t spot on my gaming budget, and I deeply appreciate stretching my cash to cover two new games for essentially the same price as a recent release!
Oh! And if anyone's interested, I see «WildArms XF» is also in the $20 range. Dang—maybe I can wrap their cases up and claim Santa brought them all to me and justify it all to my checkbook that way.
