Firmware v5.02 is out now

Another day, another firmware. We kid, we kid -- but as we announced two days ago, there is another update available for you to download. Firmware v5.02 doesn't appear to do much, other than "improves system software stability during use of some features, including the PlayStation Store."

oh, it's one of those.

Nice to know Sony's adding useful new features! No wonder my PSP is collecting dust. I keep checking back here, hoping something good is going to come out in the US.

In other words.. screw those hackers!!!!!
Gurbinder @ Nov 20th 2008 9:12PM
I doubt its to stop hackers. Probably an fix for the psn network or to enhance it or to add more software compatibility.
Christopher @ Nov 20th 2008 9:55PM
Umm, no. The only thing that will stop hackers is a hardware fix ala, PSP 3000 and I still wait to see if it's truly unbreakable. I kind of doubt it, but maybe.
Also, "hacker" has kind of gotten to be a lame term for everything from "homebrew coder" to "script kiddie" to "code junky". You might want to hold off throwing that term around. Hacking truly is properly meant as breaking into and entering secure systems and networks.

"slaps own forehead" I see a few posts down that 3000 has been cracked. See? I told you.

Oh joy. We get a firmware update but nothing released on the PSN for the PSP - again.
I gotta admit, its hard sometimes supporting Sony in this round of next-gen devices. Say what you want about the Xbox, but at least that system has new releases of games on Xbox Live practically every week - and even if it doesnt, the library of games on that sytem is huge compared to Sony's.
I know, the fanboys will complain that alot of the content on Live is for the causual gamer but quite frankly, who the hell cares - at least I can turn on my Xbox and have some fun playing it whereas the PSP and to a lesser extent the PS3 sits collecting dust.
And yes, the fanboys will say "at least the PSN is free". Again, I say who the hell cares - I'd rather pay and be able to have new stuff on there every week than have something that's free but has nothing on it.
Oh well, I'll sit back and let the fanboys and Sony to tell me, yet again, "just wait, it will be better" :)

The big thing this update does is change the backgrounds to give the illusion that the 3000 screen has been improved via the update. Go ahead, look it up.
adam @ Nov 23rd 2008 9:22AM
you have to update to this or you can't go on the PSN store.
Vagrant @ Nov 23rd 2008 4:51PM
It also provided an update of 1SEG stations in a few prefectures. I'm not sure anyone reading this cares about that. Personally I scan for stations instead of just using the default list.

This evening i updated my psp slim to 5.02. It kept telling me that it couldn’t read the memory card while trying to install… finally after pressing the x button it made it to the end, only then to be told that new update wasn’t installed… Then nothing… The screen froze. I had to take the battery out to turn it off. Now it won’t power on at all. The green light shows… and the orange light shows when i plug in the charger… but nothing else…does this mean my psp is bricked or something?

EVEN THOUGH NO ONE REPLIED TO THE ABOVE YOU SHOULD KNOW...
I just got around to phoning up Sonys U.K customer care line. And basically I’m screwed…. The reason why?… Well i bought it of eBay, and it’s Sonys policy that anything bought from eBay is secondhand even if it’s brand new… Which mine was. And my problem is the company i bought it from on eBay aren’t eBay users anymore.
The guy on the phone at u.k Sony said that in order to get a refurbished PSP sent out to me, i will have to pay £64 and also provide receipts, which in my case a copy of the PayPal transaction, but also i have to contact receipt the people i bought it from as well to get a receipt from them… And because theres no way that i can provide a receipt from them… I’m screwed… Sony wont help me!
It actually turned out that if I’d lied and said I’d bought it from a high street store but had lost the receipt that wouldn’t have been a problem!
So here i am a loyal PSP user… Never once modded my PSP in anyway… Always did there shitty sometimes pointless updates. And they won’t help.
