Trophies for all games from January onwards
Can you believe it's been six months since information on PS3 Trophies were first leaked? Since then there have been many games released that support the feature though there are still, sadly, a few that do not (Fallout 3, we're looking at you). If you're one of the many who didn't enjoy playing the "will they, won't they?!" game for the past six months, you'll be happy to hear that all that will be coming to an end with the close of the year.Starting January 2009 all new games will be required by Sony to have Trophy support. This is according to VideoGamer.com who received confirmation from a SCEE representative. We've emailed SCEE to check that this is true. Considering the number of games that released this year with Trophy support (a great deal more than we expected, that's for sure), we'd be surprised to see any games release without the feature starting, well, now to be honest. Hopefully the idea of a "Trophy patch" will soon be a thing of the past.
[UPDATE] SCEE has confirmed to us that, yes, all games released from 1st January 2009 will have Trophy support out of the box.

Does this mean that every game that has ever come out for the PS3 must be patched, or every game that is releasing after Jan.?
Jerses @ Nov 20th 2008 7:22PM
im also confused...so does this mean fallout 3, silent hill, etc. will not be patched?
nakedatthecomp @ Nov 20th 2008 7:41PM
I think it means all games released after Jan '09. And I thought there was confirmation that Fallout 3 would be trophy-patched i the future...?
AlterEgo @ Nov 20th 2008 7:43PM
It means that all games whose release date is January 1, 2009 until the end of the PS3's lifespan MUST release with trophies AT release. No "trophy patch" in the future of the game or anything.
Trophies at launch. No questions asked.
Which means GOWIII, Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5, and every other game from Jan 1 must launch with trophies. :) Hooray for that.
B-rad @ Nov 20th 2008 11:53PM
Good for Sony, but seriously... this is late in the game folks. Every game on the 360 has Achievements ("Trophies" in Sony-speak), and I think this has been so since... launch? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, at least they are getting with the program finally.
Tom @ Nov 21st 2008 12:42PM
Here's a titbit for you: 'Achievements' were first seen in the Spyro the Dragon series when it was exclusive to the PSX. They were called skill points.
kentuckyfried @ Nov 20th 2008 7:06PM
GREAT. I won't be doing my evil playthrough of Fallout 3 until then.
nakedatthecomp @ Nov 20th 2008 7:41PM
ditto!
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 20th 2008 9:54PM
Fallout 3 already came out. This is just all games that release on or after January 1st 2009. I'm not sure if Bethesda intends to patch Fallout 3 with trophies or not.
kentuckyfried @ Nov 21st 2008 1:33AM
That doesn't matter here...seems like the mandate is that ALL games will need to be patched for trophies by that time, but I'll have to go back and check the article.
Brosive @ Nov 20th 2008 7:14PM
Right on! This is good news. Now, if only companies like Capcom can patch their upcoming games soon. *coughSuperStreetFighterIITurboHDRemixcough* 'scuse me. I think I'm catching a terrible cold.
James @ Nov 20th 2008 7:17PM
Yeah Chris i wonder that as well, does it mean that all PS3 games before the January 2009 will be patched as well.
AJ_3 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:18PM
MGS4 I'm looking at YOU
Kilo720 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:44PM
same here buddy
i though they would alease had a ptach by now
yamerias @ Nov 20th 2008 7:22PM
I'm guessing they mean all new games, it's unlikely that a lot of the old games that have not got Trophies will get them sadly, pity as I'd love to see patches for quite a few games.
Jake @ Nov 20th 2008 7:24PM
it means new games, but this is still great news
FeaturePreacher @ Nov 20th 2008 7:31PM
Now the only thing left is to make in-game access to music during gameplay mandatory. Well that and in-game screenshots. If trophies can be made mandatory, there are fewer and fewer excuses for not having these two features mandatory.
Nick @ Nov 20th 2008 7:36PM
It'd be foolish to think that all previous games will be patched. Insomniac, for example, has already said that Resistance: Fall of Man will not be patched. This only applies to games coming out January 09 and beyond.
d-rod008 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:39PM
all there saying is that games from jan. 09 till forever won't be patched they will just have trophy support when you put in the disc.
Kilo720 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:45PM
woot it about time sony
MexicanTerrorist @ Nov 20th 2008 7:50PM
I'd still like MGS4 trophies plz.
Autobot71Irnhide @ Nov 20th 2008 9:14PM
ZOMG! MexTerror! Its thebertrams in teh hizzle!
MexicanTerrorist @ Nov 20th 2008 10:45PM
ZOMG NOWAI
maxpontiac @ Nov 20th 2008 8:10PM
Good news indeed.
Now..where is my in-game private chat?
kentuckyfried @ Nov 21st 2008 1:37AM
I hope that if and when it's implement, it's private chat between an entire party, not just one person to another. That would give a nice swift kick in the balls to the Xbox Live service (which still doesn't support that functionality).
Haohmaru @ Nov 20th 2008 8:22PM
I could take or leave trophies myself, but it's good news for those who want 'em. All I want is a Way of the Samurai 3 localization.
kentuckyfried @ Nov 21st 2008 1:38AM
I hope there's Japanese voice track support + subtitles like Valkyria Chronicles. That's a must, no excuse not to have that.
j.howlett @ Nov 20th 2008 8:34PM
i only wish lair wasn't hated on so much. it was an average game but it had dragons. i want my dragon trophy dammit
Justin @ Nov 20th 2008 8:52PM
I'm amazed how many people can't read.
It means all NEW games being published/released have to have trophies. It doesn't mean all old games need to be patched.
Marrvia @ Nov 20th 2008 10:43PM
I think you need to blame Jem Alexander for that. The way he wrote it says that "All Games" will have to have trophy support in 2009, yet when you click the link, it clearly says "All Newly Released Games" in 2009 onward. I usually don't read the links, so if I had only read this page, I might have thought all games would get trophy support.
will @ Nov 20th 2008 9:54PM
trophies are great and all, but who really has time to go and get them all? i beat dead space and got 46% of trophies. i really don't have the patience to go back and get all of them, especially since it requires MINIMUM of 2 more playthroughs (another go round on normal and a go round on impossible for the trophy). that game is just too repetetive to warrant playing through for trophies. i might do it if there were cheats, i guess.
kentuckyfried @ Nov 21st 2008 1:39AM
I'll get some of them, but I'm not sure if all...that asteroid one is going to be a pain.
Livi70590 @ Nov 20th 2008 9:56PM
Shove your trophies. I want Custom Soundtracks for all games.
FeaturePreacher @ Nov 20th 2008 11:10PM
Ah, but you forget, making trophies mandatory sets a good precedent. Now, they've lost one more excuse for why custom soundtracks can't be mandatory from some point onwards.
Jonathan @ Nov 20th 2008 11:19PM
Custom soundtracks is so pointless, except for racing, puzzle, or fighting games. How are you going to get into the mood of Dead Space with Miley Cyrus playing in the background?
Fane @ Nov 21st 2008 6:32PM
Well, it might make you want to kill something (probably yourself).
brettjr @ Nov 21st 2008 2:19AM
Is sony in the position to demand things from people willing to put games on their system? I'm just wondering because a lot unfortunately haven't bothered to or have a "we will when we get around to it" attitude.
Sw8 @ Nov 21st 2008 4:37AM
I think old games without trophies shouldnt be allowed to go into the Platnium range.
If they can be botherd to re-package and count the cash from the renewed interest from a newley platnium game, they should invest in giving them trophies. This will also help renew interest.
Lars @ Nov 21st 2008 1:33PM
This sucks! I hate platforms to force uneccesary standards on developers. I used to call PS3 the platform of freedom... not anymore.
Marrvia @ Nov 21st 2008 5:22PM
How is it a bad thing? It adds replay value and a bigger sense of accomplishment for everything you do in a game. Stop whining, it's a good thing.
Lars @ Nov 26th 2008 6:20PM
Seriously? You don't get it?
As a consumer, I've always enjoyed when devs put medals/trophies/achievements/whatever into their games on their own accord, because it means they had some killer ideas on how to add more to the game. But when it's mandated you get tons of stupid crap like "finish level one" or "play online" which are so uninspired they make me want to puke.
As a software engineer, I don't like anything being mandated to me by the platform holder. Their responsibility is to create a system that I want to make stuff for, not to add all kinds of bullshit rules and requirements. Plus that means it will cost even more to make a game, which = higher $$ to the consumer.
maidsandharem @ Nov 21st 2008 11:34PM
screw trophies, i want my in-game music
