PS3 tops CNN's 'Best of the Blu-ray players' list

CNNMoney has put together a list of the five best Blu-ray players you can currently find on the market. Sitting pretty at the top is our beloved PS3, with the highest grade given of A-. Why such a high grade? The ability to upgrade to Profile 2.0, excellent picture quality, 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio, and fast load times for movies were just some of the reasons CNN cited. Their biggest complain seems to be about the lack of an IR receptor, which means you can't use universal remotes with it.
Not to worry, CNET and RemoteShoppe has got you covered in that department. Each site has their own Infrared-to-Bluetooth converter guides to help you pick out the best equipment for your needs. Check it out here and here.

why do you need a IR when you have bluetooth remote control!!!? You can be in the toilet 7 mts away and pause the channel or change the tunes.
brampf @ Nov 26th 2008 2:09PM
So you can use a universal remote like the Philips Pronto for example.
Jerses @ Nov 26th 2008 2:18PM
Well if you really really like to have just one controller then buy those $10 ps3 remote control...they have a us IR reciver... you can program youre universal IR with that. I have it working with my harmony one.
Devin @ Nov 26th 2008 3:05PM
Yeah, I am using the $15 Nyko Blu-Wave reciever to interface the PS3 with my Harmony remote as well.
Really, the way I see it is that I'm going to have to put a disc in every time I watch a movie anyways, which means I will be right next to the Power button, so even though I can't turn the PS3 on with my Harmony (since there is no power going to the USB slots hence the reciever doesn't have power to "hear" the command to power on the PS3) it doesn't really matter to me.
You can still power the PS3 down with it, which is nice. Just go the Power Off icon on the far left of the XMB.

Never Say Can't...
I control my PS3 with my Logitech XBox360 Harmony Universal Remote.
You can... but it will cost ya.
I use the IR2BT. There are some others out there as well.

:Surprised:
!!

are you kidding? i love the bluetooth. Having 2 remotes is fine when i can keep the Ps3 in a (well ventilated) cabinet out of harms way. (animals, children)
and when i playing music while in the kitchen or bedroom im still good.
Sony should come out w/ a usb-> Infared adapter & universal upgrade so you could use the bluetooth remote and have the ps3 spit out IR to your TV/cable box/etc!
(maybe not but its an idea)

Like that?
Eric E @ Dec 1st 2008 10:45AM
No, the opposite, It gets a signal from the PS3 and sends out an IR to a TV or Cablebox.
That gets IR from a tv remote and sends bluetooth to the ps3.

Yay! Best Blu-ray player! Huzzah!
Yay! Best game cons... Oh, wait a second...
NightHawk @ Nov 26th 2008 4:30PM

Jack Tretton @ Nov 26th 2008 5:51PM
That was pretty impudent, wasn't it? ;)
Hey, I love my PS3! My Harry Potter Blu-rays look wonderful!

Ted @ Nov 27th 2008 7:33PM
No I posted my comment way b4 the other home invite post on the site went up
Andy @ Nov 26th 2008 2:56PM
Do people seriously need a remote control? Waste of money if you ask me, the controller works just fine.
Devin @ Nov 26th 2008 3:12PM
It's for those who like controlling everything (reciever, cable box, TV/Projector and their PS3 (BR/DVD player)) all using one remote. I'm only doing it because my girlfriend didn't like having to switch between the DS3 for movie control and the Harmony for sound.....$15 worth it IMO....
Sorry for the double post....
Andy @ Nov 26th 2008 3:16PM
meh I don't care I have 4 remotes including the ps3 controller, doesn't bother me.
ejamer @ Nov 26th 2008 3:08PM
This isn't a knock on the PS3, but shouldn't someone be able to create a full-featured, stand-alone Blu-ray player that costs less than a PS3?
I'm honestly surprised that there isn't a better non-gaming option if the media is growing as quickly as people say.
brazenheaded @ Nov 26th 2008 3:38PM
I think that whenever Sony hits that magic PS3 install base number (one that they can actually brag about and not having people snickering behind their backs) then you will see cheaper Blu-ray players pop up..
nakedatthecomp @ Nov 26th 2008 9:44PM
I've seen 'em for $249

There are some obvious benefits to having a standard remote - for example, not having to teach your friends/family/girlfriend how to watch movies without your help.
You might not want or need a remote, but I'm willing to bet you bought the PS3 more because of gaming than because you were excited about getting a Blu-ray player... true enough?
brazenheaded @ Nov 26th 2008 3:40PM
Actually I'm the other way around, I picked up the PS3 as a Blu-ray player first and foremost.. The fact that it played games (MGS4 and LBP mostly) is just an extra bonus.
The_Black_Circle @ Nov 26th 2008 3:38PM
can you fix the typo "a list of the fivebest Blu-ray players"
On topic, glad to see that the PS3 is still topping lists for best BD players, it really is. Many people will still buy cheaper ones, but tech savvy people will quickly realize which is the best investment.
JM @ Nov 27th 2008 11:37AM
I personally use the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player BUT there are two other cons:
The PS3 doesn't have analog audio out puts & the PS3 doesn't support bitstream TrueHD or DTS-MA.
