Rumor: Imagination Technologies, Sony team up for PSP successor

While it's not rumor that Britain-based Imagination Technologies has signed a license agreement with an undisclosed new partner, it is a rumor that this unnamed company happens to be Sony Corp. Despite a press release from Imagination Technologies only calling it "a major international consumer electronics company," EETimes is reporting that Sony will use Imagination's PowerVR SGX graphics processor -- specifically the as yet announced SGX55x core -- for a "PSP2" in the future. It's interesting to note that Imagination's PowerVR tech has already been implemented in Apple iPhones. What could this mean if it is indeed true?

it was implemented by nokia and ti omap 2, 3 series, nokia nseries smartphones.

whatever it is, i'm supporting it in the future.
Plz don't have touch screens.
make the width somewhere between the slim and phat
have at least 8 hours of battery at full light cause it's fatter
add another analog stick for more innovation like karate kid. (it's a joke, but seriously have the analog!)

How about people who only use their psp for gaming. They shouldn't be required to buy a memory stick, when they only need space for game saves and FW updates.

Touch screen please! Not only would that be great for games, but also for apps.

no touch screen. I have to go with the internal memory. Along with the memory stick slot, it would be a deadly combination.

Not that I hate touchscreen, its just that I love pushing buttons more, and I hate fingertips

Its up to Sony ofcourse.If they will make a dual-analog stick PSP2,we will have to buy all games and other again.As well as in the case of touch sreen.Its very interesting feature for apps (piano application on iPhone for ex.) but I think touch screens are expensive and bad for playing action games...Try imagine how you are playing GTA on touch screen.Personally,I prefer radical improvement of internet browser (maybe new FW could help),file management and bigger resolution of LCD.

I like the PSP, but it's got problems that could be fixed with a pretty modest hardware revision I think (of the Gamecube -> Wii scale).

I wouldn't have internal memory, but add a few more memory stick slots. Which the prices of them now, with 4 slots you could have 16 gigs of memory for under $100. And in the future the sky is the limit, really.

Have installs like the Xbox 360. Optical media is always going to be the cheapest delivery method, but it's slow. Installs fix this problem.

Touchscreen. While a bit gimmicky, it is extremely useful in certain genres, like adventure games and "Brain Training" stuff

More memory and better graphics. The PSP's graphics aren't bad, but they aren't that great, either. Most games suffer from really bad dithering if you look closely, I guess because of a lack of memory. Needs aliasing too, and a screen that isn't full of lines and isn't blurry.

Add a second analog stick, just to shut people up.

If you are going to offer downloadable games (and they should), you need a built in 3G service so everyone can get them easily, without the hassle of hooking it to an external device like PC or PSP or a wireless router.

Firstly, you can already get a 16gig memory card for "under a 100 bucks" at several places online. Secondly, in order for sony to add 3g capability's to the psp, they would have to create an agreement with a third party source, (ie., sprint, verizon, or at&t) and then charge a fee for usage. The phone companys aren't going to give away their bandwidth for nothing. Sony tried a user agreement with t-mobile awhile back, remember how bad that failed? No one wanted to pay for service, when they could use a free wi-fi hotspot.

installs seem a bit farfetched, its a handheld not a console. Though I do second the part on the graphics..only top games seem to have good graphics, the others are slightly crummier, though that could be more to low production cost games (or just bad, look at prince of persia, its so pixalated )

Installation -at least partly- has been announced for Mana Khemia ( http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/mana-khemia-set-for-release-in-january/ ). Hopefully that's the beginning of a trend and not an indication of the game's performance...

They need to get rid of disks. As much as I love my PSP (and actually buy a few games), I have it hacked so I don't have to walk around with a UMD case and switch everytime I want to change a game while walking outside or waiting in line somewhere.

That, and the awful analog, are my only problems with the current PSP. PSP2 doesn't need a huge technology improvement really.

My main problem with the UMD's is that they seem more prone to abuse than other media. When I get a used game, sometimes the plastic casing will be starting to come apart.

I can understand why they did things this way (more space, less cost, able to control who can make it better than with most other media), but doesn't Memory Stick Pro have a security system on it that can be used to make sure that the game isn't a bootleg?

dude, that was for da ps3, they neva mentioned that for the psp... and anyway its been out for about 3-4 years now, its only gt a couple yrs left, as a handheld

out, so we should be able to expect new content and updates after the
PSP2 makes an entrance.

I don't know what the PSP2 will look like.

But please, please, please don't make it a god damned cell phone. I don't own one because I don't want to own one. What I do want is to play games. The PSP2 should play games first and foremost, and should probably focus on games secondly just in case.

....I could give a toss about a second analog nub or internal memory or any of that. Just don't make it a friggin' cell phone!!!!!

what i think would be awesome is a dual analog for the psp2 and a touch screen that would be able to type. yes i know stupid, but what the heck. and an ability to make aps for the system. check out psp world to see the current graphics chip processor and look at what sony wants to do. Its freakin awesome!
