Heavy Rain will use SIXAXIS to 'push, hit, or kick'

Quantic Dream's David Cage sat down with 1UP to talk about their upcoming PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain. From our impressions, you already know the game will utilize SIXAXIS controls, mainly to interact with the environment or selecting an option during a conversation. Cage expands upon this, stating that SIXAXIS will be used "for violent actions requiring you to push, hit, or kick in general." However, the face buttons will only be used during PAR (what Cage calls QTE sequences), but not outside of them.
As many have deduced, the plot-heavy and emotionally engaging Heavy Rain will primarily be an offline, single-player title. Cage confirms this, but again mentions some form of DLC could be in the works: "The game will support the Trophy system and may offer some kind of extra content online, but Heavy Rain is a single-player experience."
The director also gave a number of insights into the upcoming genre-defying title, such as how he incorporated user feedback from his previous game, Indigo Prophecy. Read the full interview here.

not sure about this. Can you even call it a game? Since its pretty much just a movie. Its not like you get to control the character from what I've seen. Its plays a movie and stops and ask you which way to go and then it flashes the buttons on the screen and you do a timed button press and back to movie. I'm not sure about this one.
ryan @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:30PM
I think it'll play more similar to a point and click adventure game, but more mobility and quick time events ala God of War.
Kholar @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:02PM
PS3 Fanboy should have the link to this with every Heavy Rain article, just to stop comments like that.

Alvaro @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:31PM
nice... cant wait to play it :)
i wonder if there will be a trophy for playing all the game at once.. since Cage said in an interview that this game will have savepoints but he suggest we dont save, just a long jorney, cuz once you get a savepoint and you do some actions, once you come back to it you could do diferent actions and the story would change... and thats not the point... anyways can wait, is there a date out for this game yet??
MikeDawg @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:31PM
I dont think that would be a good idea unless u can turn off that option...and then configure your own control scheme.
I dont know of any PS3 games that have made the sixaxis control scheme a better gaming experience.
Kodros @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:28PM
High Velocity Bowling =)
ftrunks @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:55PM
Forklore had the best sixaxis controls.
When developers correctly incorporate sixaxis it truly does feel natural.
Nick @ Dec 2nd 2008 3:34PM
You just shook the SIXAXIS around. It was simply an attempt to utilize the motion controls. I would have rather played the game without the motion. The best use of SIXAXIS that I've experienced on PS3 is probably High Velocity Bowling.
Duke @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:54PM
I'm unsure how much I would like this for any violent action in the game. Seems a little limiting and I expect would leave you in trouble a lot.
(It does work well for bowling though!)
Great Golem+ @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:33PM
Let's just hope the latter part of the game doesn't suck as much as in Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy. That was a textbook example of how to ruin a great adventure game.
Tez @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:19PM
Amen. Fuck that game, it seriously jumped the shark.
Mingjinko @ Dec 2nd 2008 7:15PM
Eh, you're right, that game went pretty downhill after the scene with Lucas running through the streets from the cops.... Which sucked because I really liked how the game was going. It just got a little too cartoony and magical. Here's to hoping Quantic Dream doesn't drop the ball on Heavy Rain.
rice @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:37PM
Ireally hope that SIXAXIS isn't required cause I extremely hate using the SIXAXIS, I have not enjoyed it for a single game yet. Look what happened to LAIR
stargateheaven @ Dec 2nd 2008 9:05PM
What do you mean "required"? every ps3 comes with a sixaxis enabled controller...
gillyy0 @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:40PM
Ehh Sixaxis...
mrlittledebbie @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:42PM
i thought it was used perfectly in ratchet & clank.
Gaucho @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:47PM
I never found the sixaxis to add all that much fun to a game. if anything it just made it more frustrating. The one that comes foremost to mind is Heavenly Sword. It makes the game feel disjointed when you have to use the six axis. as if its a minigame... except its no fun. at least IMO. I'm sure someone likes it.
PSN: John-Paul-Jones @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:55PM
The SIXAXIS doesn't even feel like a true 1:1 motion sensor.
parkd @ Dec 2nd 2008 8:21PM
Yup, It took awhile but I started to really enjoy the arrow shooting game in Heavenly Sword :P
Jerses @ Dec 2nd 2008 1:51PM
Doomed.
sixaxis should only be used to reload weapons or bowling games lol.
Mycosynth @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:01PM
To all you Sixaxis haters.
Get WipEout HD and play it with both pitch and steer.
Its a way better experience the the old good d-pad.
ultimateidiot911 @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:15PM
The Sixaxis is true 1:1 motion. I know people who pick it up and used like if it's natural like my brother.
I'm not that great with the sixaxis but I enjoy using it.
Oddface @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:31PM
Oh come on, guys. You'll jerk the pad in some direction at a few occurences. You won't be doing any precision steering or shit like that.
Emyrs @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:40PM
Ive said it before and i'll say it now F$#K sixaxis! when will developers learn to not force this BS on gamers. EVERY time a developer has assigned a mandatory function to sixaxis it has failed. utterly. make it optional but stop shoving it down our throats.
Examples: LAIR(flight), SOCOM(corner lean)
flynn110 @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:50PM
the more i hear about how this game is going to work, the less excited i become for it. it seems to be turning into a long cgi cutscene complete with timed button presses. whoopee?
after the fail of little big planet sony really needs a killer exclusive. lbp was fun and all but it seems for most, myself included, that fun proved to be short lived.
Devin @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:04PM
LBP was a "fail"? "Short lived"? You fail my friend.....
Sixaxis is a great concept that needs to better utilized, like being used for reloading a gun, leaning around corners or driving a car/plane. Anything else needs to be used via joystick IMO.
Martin hald @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:08PM
What?!
FAIL of littlebigplanet?
LBP is not a fail. It's not "great and all" - It's a new take on gaming. Stop judging for everybody and say LBP was a fail. If you don't like it - well, the rest of us don't care.
I think you're the kind of person who is discreative. Really. If you're creative its so much more funny!
flynn110 @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:14PM
@ martin
i judge for one person, myself. you are free to think whatever you want. the fact is that the game sold nowhere near where they had expected and wanted it to. some would consider that a fail. some would also consider the moderation of the game since launch a fail as well.
you are super creative for making up a word that does not even exist. 'discreative' - now that is genius!! i think the word you look for is uncreative.
Araskaz @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:22PM
Wait, so your saying just because it didn't sell as well as a sequel means it it a fail? You do know it's a new IP right? And it set records for a new IP. Lmao, thanks for sharing your thoughts on something you have no clue about.
And no, sorry... but yeah, LBP is for the creative folks. Actually, it's for everyone. You don't even have to be creative. You could love sports and make a level about that, or be book smart and make a level that evolves around math. I don't know how you say it's a fail... when it's one of the best games ever.
Even if it sold 3 copies, it's not a fail. It would still be the best game ever... and it would still never get old.
Duke @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:04PM
I don't think the game was a fail, but to say it was the best game ever is a bit over the top, don't you think? Its sales have not been as good as they hoped at all and even Sony said that.
Well, at least you aren't discreative in your arguments.
Martin hald @ Dec 3rd 2008 3:43AM
Great, then.
Now when everybody had judged on their own I'd like to compliment Araskaz! That was what I was thinking to - didn't really bother writing it though, since I thought everybody had compared the sale number with the "new IP/sequel thing" in mind.
- Does that make any sense? I hope so!
And Flynn110
- I'm so sorry! Really!
Now that i've spelled wrong I will never be the Englishman I've always wanted to be!
I'm a genius? Thank you! ;)
And yes, UNcreative was the word!
lakaihigh @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:19PM
OT: sixaxis support is nice but I barely use it for any of games now. It was a fun idea but its not as responsive as i think it should be. just my opinion though.
maybe off topic not 2 sure but it looks like the room of that house went through 'extreme make over, House edition' featuring furniture from Ikea.
peace,
Lh
kyle @ Dec 2nd 2008 3:16PM
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo not sixaxis!!!!!!!!!
LordAbsu @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:00PM
I like the new "push, hit, or kick"-related SF IV pic.
Choice.
The1stMJC @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:17PM
OH god worst news heard about this games yet. Sixaxis being used more and more. It only works good with High Velocity Bowling. Hope they can be turned off.
Araskaz @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:23PM
Guys, if you think HVBowling pulled off sixaxis awesomely, why wouldn't you think that there is another game that can do it?
KiraXD @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:03PM
hmm is that picture in-game screen of heavy rain? holy crap if it is.
Hyams @ Dec 2nd 2008 9:47PM
Yup, it is.
The game is just fuckin' beautiful.
Paulmichael @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:11PM
That is one awesome screenshot.
Bobby @ Dec 3rd 2008 5:49PM
Honestly sony, leave the motion senseing to Wii, I can't beleive they continue to make games that use sixaxis after that discrace of a game "Lair" came out. Worst game ever. That game was hyped up so bad and when it relesed everybody was like WTF is this, this blows. lol
Spallit @ Dec 3rd 2008 10:13AM
I know what you mean. The first thing I do when playing a "Six Axis" supported game, is look through the option to turn it off.
Terrible implementation in all games to date. Just terrible.
