The classic board game,
Catan, is set to arrive on the PlayStation Network soon. This will be an original version of the game (not a port of the XBLA title), and is helmed by Game Republic, developers of
Genji and
Folklore. The download is scheduled to hit Japan on December 18th for 1200 yen. The game will expand to other territories, although a release date has not been set.
Although only one player will be supported offline, the online multiplayer mode will allow for four players to go against each other. Surprisingly, the board game will feature both 1080p graphics and 5.1 surround sound.

What do you mean by "an original version of the game"?
What's the difference between this and the 360 XBLA version? Is this one going to be "original" because it's based off of the board game instead of the XBLA one... because that would mean the board game is the original.

Settlers has many expansions which alter and add to the rules.

I think what an "Original Version of the game" means that its not the same one as on the Xbox (which was a nice version IMO) but built all new from the ground up.
Catan is the only online game I miss from my now sold XBOX360 :)

This is one of my favorite games on the Xbox 360. I don't really have a reason to get it for my PS3, but I'm glad PS3 owners can play one of the best board games ever created.

This is my most played arcade game on my 360. I'll be interested to see how this one turns out, maybe they'll support it more than the 360 version (expansions please?).

Ugh why, WHY would have been so much cooler to play my wife, but only multiplayer online. I might pick it up anyway, becuase I would love to more of this sort of this on ps3.

This is awesome news! I introduced this game to the kids I babysit and they are hooked on it. We play it everytime I come over. This definitely won't replace the actual board game for me (being that there is no local multiplayer [which is ridiculous]), but it would be nice to play it more often since I only play it with those kids. I need an NA release date ASAP!
Plus this game has many expansions which I hope get onto the PSN.

Yeah, this is good news! Very fun board game. Local multi-player would be great, but how would that even work? Wouldn't you be able to see your opponents cards? Does the 360 have local multi-player?

My guess is that the game developers had an agreement to not allow more than one player offline because it might affect sales of the actual board game, which was of course intended for social gatherings. Marketers may believe that they will bring in more sales of the actual game if people enjoy playing it online. Makes sense in an age where so many people are exposed to games via consoles.

How exactly would someone keep hidden information (ie, resource and development cards) private with multiplayer offline? "Honey, can you turn away? It's my turn again."
Carcassonne, of course, since the drawn tile is public information, but it's not really possible with Catan.
