PS3 version of Mirror's Edge to get free bonus DLC
EA and DICE have announced details on Mirror's Edge DLC. In late January, players will be able to download nine new races for the Time Trial mode. According to the press release, these levels will have "no guns, no cops, and no city: this is true aesthetics, agility and flow that will challenge any runner." We're not entirely sure what that means, but we certainly want to find out. Update: Well, this new video certainly clears things up. Wow.
The nine new races will cost $10. However, PS3 owners get a special treat. All owners of the game can download an additional tenth race for free from the PlayStation Store. This is the PS3-exclusive DLC we've been waiting to hear about. (Who doesn't like free stuff?)

Damn... I thought the 9 extra races would the be the free DLC.
Nevertheless - having the extra, 10th race will be pretty cool. But does it mean you have to download the 9 others, or can you get the 10th one independently?
Andrew Yoon @ Dec 4th 2008 10:54AM
The 10th race is free for all.
Liquidxtension @ Dec 4th 2008 10:25AM
I'm a bit confused. Does that mean 360 owners will be able to receive the 9 other races and 10th race is exclusive to Ps3 owners only?
reyes @ Dec 4th 2008 10:38AM
That's exactly what it means. Way to go, EA, with this "exclusive PS3 DLC"! One course... I hope it will at least be PS3 themed.
Spalec @ Dec 4th 2008 10:42AM
I'm guessing 360 owners get 9 races for $10 and PS3 owners get 10 for $10
koehler83 @ Dec 4th 2008 12:04PM
My guess is that the 10th map focuses on a lot of beam balancing and use of the SIXAXIS mechanics in the game.
grognard66 @ Dec 4th 2008 10:42AM
Am I the only one who finds this battle between 360 and PS3 over premium DLC bizarre? I could see the advantage if they could tout free DLC for their platform, but don't see the appeal of being honored with the chance to fork over more money for a game I already paid $60 for.
Mattchewie @ Dec 4th 2008 11:39AM
I'm with you on this one. I don't get it. Its like going to the doctor and hoping they give you an extra bill. You would think people would be smarter to fall for it but....they aren't.
My cousin leechs wireless net off his neighbor and about a month ago said wireless was no longer available. So he comes over to my place and sees the Dead Space DLC. DLC which I though "Like who would even want to spend this kind of money on skins". Well, apparently the someone is my cousin cause he and his friend were all about dropping that cash. My reply to them was "You do know its just skins right?" and then sitting in astonishment in hearing how they NEED to have that DLC.
Vcize @ Dec 4th 2008 12:06PM
Get off your high horse already. I'm sure you buy plenty of unnecessary crap that plenty of other people think is a huge waste of money.
I have not paid for DLC as trivial as skins, but that doesn't mean I never will, nor does it mean I'll chastize someone who thinks it is worth it. To each his own.
turkeybaster @ Dec 4th 2008 6:59PM
@ Vcize:
I think you are misunderstanding what Grognard said. He doesn't think paying for DLC is stupid, he thinks that touting something as insignificant as one free exclusive level (out of 9 that you pay for) is silly as something to argue over for a marketing bullet. It's a good point.
Why fight over who gets to say they get one free extra level? Why not get all ten levels as the exclusive and then make people salivate over it?
turkeybaster @ Dec 4th 2008 7:01PM
And to correct myself, I think you were referring to Matchewie in your reply, rending my reply null. Sorry.
Think Adrian @ Dec 4th 2008 10:52AM
If they release a free DLC with 10 more story hours I might buy this game...
MBO @ Dec 4th 2008 10:52AM
what?!?!?! one fuckin race?!?!?! i mean its nice and all that, but one race man. maybe 2 at least
kentuckyfried @ Dec 4th 2008 12:40PM
Yeah, I know. big fucking deal. If I can find the game for $42 or less, I might grab it, but I wish that some of the exclusive goodies were at least a little more substantial.
Gambit07 @ Dec 4th 2008 2:21PM
$44 @ Target, sir.
sn1per @ Dec 4th 2008 6:25PM
$44>$42, last time I checked.
blkant @ Dec 4th 2008 10:53AM
Kick Ass :D
Cigol @ Dec 4th 2008 11:04AM
Lame. Haha.
gravyleaves @ Dec 4th 2008 12:20PM
lame??? this video was so awesome, i felt a tingling sensation in my pants. Can't wait!
Cigol @ Dec 4th 2008 1:52PM
I was referring to the 'exclusive' 'content' PS3 owners are being treated too. In fact it works out as nothing more than a demo, getting people back into the time trial mode of the game and tempting them to buy the rest of the DLC.
Smitty @ Dec 4th 2008 11:22AM
This is kind of a let down.
XBOX gets an entire campaign in GTA4 for exclusive content... we get an extra race (~2min of game time?) in Mirror's Edge.
I know, not a fair comparison, but still... I really wish Sony would dish out some money for something... anything... please!
KRIS_C_123 @ Dec 4th 2008 12:55PM
you forget microsoft paid for that, and xbox customers have to pay for it
but ps3 owners get something for free and not paid for by sony either
and who cares about GTA4 any more, it was just above average. then it got annoying trying to use cheats after completion
Smitty @ Dec 5th 2008 8:21AM
That's why I said it wasn't a fair comparison... and I really don't care about GTA4 either - it was just the first example that I could think of regarding the disparity between 'exclusive' content between the two consoles.
Free or not, I can't think of any silver bullet DLC for the PS3. Honestly though, I really don't care too much (rarely do I grab DLC), but for those who do care, I imagine they're feeling a bit jaded.
Topher08 @ Dec 4th 2008 11:25AM
Did the xbox360 even get exclusive GTA4 content?
The exclusive content trend is just BS, offering weak content on a specific platform doesn't make me want to run out and buy a new console or get the game on one console or another. I mean, a different skin or character, an extra race, a new choice in car, this is not a reason to buy another game console to get that version of the game.
I think Microsoft started up the whole exclusive content scam (I think Microsoft throws out money like toilette paper to try and position themselves as the dominant game console which has ruined this industry IMHO) and now its become an almost industry standard to have to try and promote exclusive content in cross platform games. The problem is thats its fairly obvious the game developers could care less about it because the exclusive content is usually jumk and it never remains exclusive for long.
flubba @ Dec 4th 2008 11:43AM
There is a video of the new race stages on Vimeo

mat parker @ Dec 4th 2008 11:55AM
360: GTA4: Lost and Damned which is basically another Liberty City Stories
PS3: A Fucking time trial course
360 pwns in this case
Sim and Sim @ Dec 4th 2008 12:08PM
360: Who the hell still plays GTA4??
PS3: I CAN'T HEAR WHAT YOU'RE SAYING OF THE NOISE OF SAN FRANCISCO BEING DESTROYED!
Devin @ Dec 4th 2008 1:38PM
Honestly, I'm glad Sony is putting their money into their own development teams vs. giving it to 3rd parties....
Not to be a broken record or anything, but how many people (other than the small % of hardcore GTA fans) actually play GTAIV and want to purchase this DLC at an additional cost?
Vicelus @ Dec 4th 2008 12:08PM
Since it's free, i'm downloading it. But like ' Think Adrian' said, it would be worth it if they made some new story lenght DLC, like Valkyria Chronicles will do[and that's some GREAT news, let's us hope they don't throw this idea away]. A new race, yaaaaay... Wait, i play time trials only for the trophies,anyway... meh[because i personally think this mode sucks].It's better than nothing, but it doesn't get us to thrills.
It's funny, the industries goes wild with the new generation technology, but remains plain dumb with 'exclusive content' and rules.
jeez -_-...
Marky264 @ Dec 4th 2008 12:15PM
Stop whining about it the length of the Story. Theres more than enough content in the game already and with these new awesome maps I cant wait. They wont release new Story length levels and I hope DICE are focusing on making a 2nd Game this game is a start to new things to come for the PS3 go DICE and EA!
pat1202003 @ Dec 4th 2008 12:21PM
WOW! That looks cool. Almost look like something you would see in a WipEout game.
Justin @ Dec 4th 2008 12:22PM
You people are ridiculous dumbasses.
GTAIV has additional content because MS paid them $50 million for it. Sony hasn't paid crap for this. Comparing the two has to be the dumbest thing you idiots have done for awhile.
Just be happy you get anything and stfu.
sig @ Dec 4th 2008 12:23PM
all I wanna know is what that song was... anyone please help me... I would rather a whole album of that then the new dlc anytime
hatori1181 @ Dec 4th 2008 12:47PM
the original song is called "Still alive" and you can download it off of the PSN. (media, music. I think) But, this is some kind of remix that I would also like to have.
hatori1181 @ Dec 4th 2008 1:04PM
*update*

You guys never watched the whole video, did you?
Jules @ Dec 4th 2008 12:24PM
OMG, IT'S DEFRAG, LIKE QUAKE 3! They should make an editor so people can create their own levels. Instant classic!!
D_Average @ Dec 4th 2008 1:36PM
Just rented this, lovin it.
spyker @ Dec 4th 2008 2:03PM
That trailer is crap compared to the other Mirror's Edge ones, where they switched to a different place while doing the same move. This just switches scenes randomly. Anyway... I think I might get this.
Gambit07 @ Dec 4th 2008 2:25PM
Reminds me of Starfox.
iamkid @ Dec 4th 2008 3:49PM
WOW! that video just made my feelings on the game shoot up a few notches. i was wary about getting this game because of the short story mode, but not anymore, now that i know that the dlc is really cool. good job dice!
Ty @ Dec 4th 2008 4:09PM
EA gets creative (Dead Space, Mirrors Edge) and people get fired... tis lol but sad...
The_Punisher @ Dec 4th 2008 10:38PM
This looks good! Nice to see developers actually caring about DLC for once.
King_Castillo @ Dec 5th 2008 9:11AM
Doesn't this game suck anyway? That's what I read in reviews >_>.. well not exactly sucked, but not that good. I hate it when games with good ideas that look promising don't end up coming out that great (Mirror's Edge,Spider-Man:Web of Shadows, and that new Turok).
Mr. Joe @ Dec 5th 2008 12:30PM
am i the only one let down by this video? these maps look like they took about ten minutes to throw together. abstract jumping and running? may be cool, but i'd rather see story expansions, not just blocks for you to bounce on.
