Reeves: PS3 is '300,000 units ahead of Xbox 360' in PAL territories
SCEE president David Reeves has revealed that internal Sony numbers indicate the PlayStation 3 is "300,000 units ahead of Xbox 360" in the PAL territories. This is in response to Microsoft claims that the 360 is outselling the PS3 in Europe. Note that both statements can be true: the 360 could be outselling the PS3 in the recent months but the total tally would show that Sony's console is still ahead.
Furthermore, Reeves disclosed to MCVUK that there are no price cuts planned for the near future. "No we are not going to go down in price; neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either." This echoes what SCEE told Eurogamer late last month. "As soon as we got the manufacturing price down on PSOne we lowered the price. Same with PS2. But we're not doing that on PS3 -- that's not the model, even if people are expecting it." Read his full statement here.

Bloo @ Dec 4th 2008 6:24PM
That's good? The PS2 outsold the original Xbox by like 45 million. 300,000 isn't anything to brag about. They need to step it up.
J @ Dec 4th 2008 10:06PM
it is impressive since the ps3 is a year later, and much more expensive, and supposedly less third party support. 300k is very impressive.
Mark @ Dec 4th 2008 4:08PM
Not surprising, the 360 has a reputation as the Chavbox360, for chavs who can't afford a proper console.
playcrackthesky @ Dec 4th 2008 6:27PM
lol Chavs.
Devin @ Dec 4th 2008 4:12PM
Seriously man....what's with the name-calling....
Anyways, both companies like to use ambiguously true statements/terms such as "outselling" or "sales up 200%" that can be translated into anything fanboys want....
Outselling (past year?, past week?, since its debut?)....Sales up 200% (from last year?, the week beforehand that had hardly any?, etc.)
Bobby @ Dec 4th 2008 4:13PM
Lol its only selling for the blu-ray player, not the games. lolololololol all of my friends tell me that they don't have any games for it because they suck. They're parents just want em for blu-ray movies. What a failure of a game console! lololololololl
Tez @ Dec 4th 2008 4:18PM

ComicShaman @ Dec 4th 2008 5:09PM
They're not angry. Bemused, maybe. Reading your posts is kind of like watching a chimpanzee fling poo all over its enclosure at the zoo. Sure it's disgusting, but it's also weirdly entertaining.

epic fail
Tez @ Dec 4th 2008 4:14PM
Oh, they'll drop the price. Remember when Nintendo denied even working on the DSlite.... the DAY BEFORE they announced the DSlite?
Gunegune @ Dec 4th 2008 5:36PM
I am not a professional market analyst but...
...they probably will not drop the price for some time. They have continually said, since TGS (E3?), that they will not be dropping the price, and it seems they are getting frustrated with the rumors. Once rumors about a price drop circulate, sales tend to slump (since people wait to by a console until the price drops) and naturally an official statement will be released to counter-act the rumors.
So you're not helping PS3 sales by saying prices will drop soon, as if it's fact.
Tez @ Dec 4th 2008 6:05PM
The rumor's already out.
iamkid @ Dec 4th 2008 4:21PM
SURE, theyre not going to drop the price *wink.*
benny boy @ Dec 4th 2008 5:47PM
They said that they weren't dropping the price just before they dropped it last time.
It's not as if they're going to say "Yes a price drop is coming" or even "we don't comment on speculation and rumour" as this would just mean that no-one would buy one until there is a price drop.
benny boy @ Dec 4th 2008 5:51PM
I am agreeing with you BTW: I did notice the WINK.
Jon Acheson @ Dec 4th 2008 4:21PM
Even if they were planning price cuts, they would be foolish to announce them ahead of time and gut their holiday sales.

Your joking right, you come to a PS3 BASED site, and want to know about PS2? Can you even read the website URL your typing (Or clicking on?)
And dude, PS2 Orginal (Big one's A.K.A PS2 PHAT) is £15 in Gamestation.. and you want a price cut for a £15 console?
RolexDPracer @ Dec 4th 2008 4:39PM
Is having a 300,000 lead really something to brag about when you're being outsold by a wide margin during the busiest time of the retail season? I own all three systems, so it doesn't really matter to me. I just thought it was sort of an odd response.
Mike R @ Dec 4th 2008 4:45PM
Says who? I work in a UK retail store, and 360/PS3 sales are about neck and neck. Considering the 360 is alot cheaper, and the UK is Microsofts strongest Euro region, that's pretty good for Sony.
Why cut the price? The PS3 already fantastic value
bknight @ Dec 4th 2008 5:04PM
Europe has always been a happy hunting ground for Sony. If the 360 can outsell it there it can outsell it anywhere.
On the price cut if Sony wants the Ps3 to be where the PS2 (Last Gen) is they need a price cut.
I think Sony is doing a good job with the PS3 but it is so expensive when you can by 2 360 for 1 PS3.
I think blu ray in the PS3 was a mistake most people don't care about it, they would of been just as happy with DVD player and had the output upscaled to 1080P
Popfrogs @ Dec 4th 2008 6:20PM
"I think Sony is doing a good job with the PS3 but it is so expensive when you can by 2 360 for 1 PS3."
Sure, if you ignore the huge value proposition that a $400 PS3 has over a pair of cheap, stripped-down featureless 360 Arcades have.
Good thing European consumers know value when they see it.
Ghaleon @ Dec 4th 2008 4:50PM
The full quote had some ambiguousness, something like "I believe our numbers say ..." or something. It's wasn't a hard data kind of figure. Good job.
Gambit07 @ Dec 4th 2008 4:50PM
Error says, I'm ahead of PS3 sales in europe.
Echnaton @ Dec 4th 2008 4:51PM
No wonder the xbox360s outsells ... the ps3 ... with that many rrod's on the xbox ... you need to replace em right :-) *laught*
Alphathon @ Dec 4th 2008 5:49PM
That sounds like a true fanboy (or M$ anti-fan) talking, but alas I think it may be true *sigh*. I have a friend who had a 360 RROD on him, and went out and bought a 360 Elite because he couldn't be bothered to wait for Microsoft to repair it. He's a fanboy, but I wouldn't say that big of one, so I wouldn't think its an uncommon to do amongst fanboys...never should a high (in fact I think illigally high) failure rate increase sales! I have quite a few friends with 360s, and every single one of them has had AT LEAST one RROD and few have had other problems (not reading disks etc).
With regard to the actual topic, it definitelly seems like a both is true scenario. Thinking about it though, Reeves said that it had outsold the 360 in PAL territories...which isn't just Europe. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that includes Australia, New Zealand and much of the Middle-East, India and Africa. Of course Europe has by far the largest share of these sales, but the results may be scewed by these countries, especially as many of them are even more anti-microsoft than Europe. At the end of the day though, who cares? As long as the user base is at least strong enough so that new games are released I really don't see that it matters. Heck, I'm pretty sure that the PS3 is doing better this generation than the gamecube did last generation (relative to the competition I meen...and ignoring the Wii as it has a different target audience really, which the Gamecube didn't entirely have), in Europe at the very least
CustomX @ Dec 4th 2008 10:07PM
Too bad MS has a 3 year warranty and gives a free replacements for RROD, sorry your bash on XBOX didn't work, enjoy your PS3 with ported games 30 FPS and PS Home which will never come out.
mohannad @ Dec 4th 2008 5:07PM
sony should really focus on their work and leave MS Alone. i mean who cares if they are 300.000 units ahead if only they start focusing these energy on somethin else..i dunno like games for example...mr.reeves you should hook yourself up with a girl man.
FeaturePreacher @ Dec 4th 2008 5:10PM
Happy to see all this gloating. It will make it just that much better when December NPDs come out.
Popfrogs @ Dec 4th 2008 6:23PM
What do December's NPD numbers have to do with anything? NPD just covers North America. It still won't refute his point since it will have zero PAL territory sales data.
Goity @ Dec 4th 2008 5:15PM
300,000 isn't a massive gap though; hopefully PS3 can get back to selling higher amounts, or this lead will be squandered.
However, I always assumed that people buying multiple xboxes to replace RRODs was a load of rubbish, until recently loads of people I know have actually done so :S
Devin @ Dec 5th 2008 8:20AM
300,000 is damn good when you are comparing it against 3 different SKUs that include the barebone Arcade model....
Arcades vs. 80GB PS3's really isn't a fair 1:1 comparison in my book, but whatever...if that's how they count them then so be it....
GGCAN @ Dec 4th 2008 5:28PM
Bobby...you say the PS3 is ahead due to the Bluray player..well, I guess that's cause Sony won the war over Microsoft with this format.
I'm a bit older player (probably could be your parent) and it's not only the Bluray player that I bought my PS3 for.
It's the gaming, the entertainment system...the great PS3 following of people I've met.
If you want to be a kid all your life, keep posting your remarks and look like a real little kid.
kentawilson @ Dec 4th 2008 5:53PM
Sony and Microsoft wasn't in a format war. You might wanna say Sony and Toshiba. I believe if the 360 would've came with a built in HD DVD drive then it would have been a war. I guess because they had that add on that didn't even sell 300,00 that could be considered all Microsoft.
Until most you all start seeing actual money from either MS or Sony I wouldn't be so quick pledge all faith and belief to one console. Even if you are you still shouldn't do it.
Fane @ Dec 7th 2008 5:29PM
@ kentawilson
Technically, you're right, but it's disingenuous to say Microsoft wasn't involved. They picked a side, even if it was only to extend the war in hopes that it would A) hurt the PS3 and B) last long enough to slow uptake of HD discs until downloads could take over.
DETH-DEFIANCE @ Dec 4th 2008 5:29PM
I do believe Reeves is talking about number SINCE the console was released. Because if you watched the Playstation Day back in Around March of this year, Reeves announced they had caught up to the 360 in Europe is a signifcant less time (a year), while sales for the ps3 and gone up and down over the summer and autumn, a 300,000 unit lead doesn't sound that difficult to believe. Therefore i do believe Microsoft is talking about that the 360 has been outselling the ps3 recently, not altogether.
alex @ Dec 4th 2008 5:29PM
This is what MS thinks of your European lead LOL.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/360-enjoys-highest-sales-month-ever-in-europe
OwningXylophone @ Dec 4th 2008 5:33PM
Well, both statements are probably true... Check this map of NTSC/PAL/SECAM territories and you'll see that PAL covers about 1/3 of the world, and not all of Europe...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PAL-NTSC-SECAM.svg
So just another spin story in the ever growing 'my cock is bigger than yours' battle between Sony & MS fanboys...
Openuriis @ Dec 4th 2008 5:44PM
Another thing to remember is that sony and nintendo count their sales based on sales to consumes, while microsoft count theirs basd on supliers. So many of the outselling xboxs are probably just sitting on a shelf somewhere
GGCAN @ Dec 4th 2008 6:16PM
Kentawilson...yes understand about Sony and Toshiba...but what I meant was that add on feature that didn't sell well on the 360.
As well, I wasn't at all impressed with the number of 360's that had the red light problem
I actually went out to purchase a 360 and the salesman that I spoke to had both a 360 and PS3 and after he told me his 360 was in the shop 5 times already, that totally swayed me to the PS3.
Another feature is that it's not as loud as the 360...and I keep mine on constantly as I use Folding@Home application when it's not in use.
There have been absolutely no problems with the PS3...whereas I have friends that are scared to have their 360 on for too long a period due to overheating.
Sure MS is fixing the problems....but I want a console that isn't constantly having to be repaired.
Tyler @ Dec 5th 2008 8:20AM
AMEN!
MS should not have rushed out a half-assed product, just to beat Sony... Then add on the extra stuff (HDMI?)
Sure, Sony should have thought a little more about their price mark, but at least their system is solid as a brick. I accidentally left my ps3 on for a four day vacation, and when I came back it was just really hot...
TRY that with any 360.
