Upcoming Home content shown at London media day
"Home will live or die on the strength of its content." It was good to hear these words coming from Daniel Hill, Sony Europe's Director of Home, at a media day event in London. While Home's initial vision seemed ambitious and groundbreaking, what we've seen so far in the closed beta has been comparatively underwhelming. What was shown at the event, however, was some upcoming first- and third-party content that showed significant progress and potential.
Seeing as the media day event was hosted by SCEE there will be some info regarding Home spaces that might be correct only for Europe. The majority of info should, however, be universal for all regions.
The MotorStorm apartment, a premium customizable living space, is very different to the Harbour Studio and the Summer House that closed beta users have already seen. Based around the MotorStorm franchise it's set on a cliff shelf, overlooking the MotorStorm festival, complete with an animated race taking place below. The Home developers we spoke to hadn't yet decided how it would be distributed, but suggested it might be a contest prize or

Speaking of events, we were shown the Events space, which has been around for a while now, reskinned for one of three upcoming events, which Sony promised us will be "coming shortly". The event demonstrated was a PSP-3000 treasure hunt, which asks Home users (Homers?) to find eight hidden numbers, strategically placed around the Events space. These numbers are plugged into an in-Home website and enter you into a prize draw for a real life PSP-3000 (pro tip: look closely at the Loco Roco fountain). Everyone who takes part will get a free in-Home PSP-3000 cap (pictured).
Two other events were mentioned, including a "design your own T-shirt" event, with the winner's design being made available for sale in the Home shopping centre. There will also be a "MotorStorm VIP" event, with some sort of developer interaction. These events look like great fun and, if they happen regularly, could be reason enough to come back into Home every so often.
Red Bull has recently been revealed as the first third-party partner to have their own Home environment. This Red Bull Air Race space was available to play with and includes a 3D plane-flying minigame. Players race through a set of rings in the fastest time possible. Times will then be placed on a universal Home leaderboard, allowing you to see how rank against your friends. Seeing full 3D minigames like this inside Home makes the service's potential a lot more exciting than we previously thought.
While all of the above content was shown live, there were also some pieces of concept art on show. These were for upcoming first-party game spaces, such as the Buzz! space which includes a multiplayer minigame called the "Buzz! Runaround." The concept art showed a top-down view of the environment, which looks like a Buzz! controller. Questions are pumped through from MyBuzz! and players must stand on the correct colored button to rack up points. Everyone in the room can play the game simultaneously, which means up to 32 people can be running around this virtual Buzz! controller at a time. This will also have a leaderboard, much like the Red Bull Air Race game.
Concept art for the MotorStorm space, complete with "MotorKartStorm" minigame and merchandise counter where you can buy such things as MotorStorm branded ripped festival jeans, were also shown. Finally, the Resistance 2 space concept art was revealed. The developers will be playing on the "Twisted History" aspect of the franchise by transforming the Home central plaza into a Chimeran infested invasion site. There was also talk of a team-based minigame requiring people to fight back a horde of Chimera, though that wasn't shown in the concept artwork.
That's it as far as content that was shown, but we were promised that there's more waiting in the wings from third parties, many of which they couldn't talk about thanks to contracts being in various stages of completion. Partners that were confirmed include Sega, Activision, Midway, Atari, Eidos, Ubisoft, EA Sports, Diesel and Audi.
A lot of interesting tid bits were also revealed. The Trophy room, long assumed dead, has been placed on hold. Though Daniel Hill did assure us that 3D Trophies would happen in the future. Speaking of Trophies, it has been confirmed that Home will be able to read what Trophies you have and unlock content appropriately. Not only that, but Home will also be able to dish out its own Trophies, though there is no indication how those will work.
It's possible for future games to have this functionality built in, so that when you acquire a Trophy a message will pop up telling you what you've unlocked in Home. There's also the potential for in-game menus, taking you straight to a game's Home space. It seems that integrating the entire PS3 platform in this way is a large aspect of Home.
There are hopes to develop further PSN Store integration, such as being able to download a game's demo or downloadable content simply by approaching an in-Home advertisement. Cross-game invites are possible by pulling people through Home, thanks to the party system, though it won't be available immediately.
Other updates, like bigger clubs, cross-Home game launching and extended profiles, are already planned. This interesting content should start to drop immediately, with more coming fairly regularly. If that happens, Home could definitely be a worthwhile addition to the PS3's feature list.

Lets hope more 3rd parties jump in.
FeaturePreacher @ Dec 10th 2008 2:47PM
I would say let's hope Sony learned a lesson from 2d trophies and how they made them mandatory after January '09. Let's hope Sony realizes that they must coerce developers into using certain features of HOME such as 3d trophies and game launching if the game has an online multiplayer component. They don't have to make features beyond that compulsory though.
anda @ Dec 10th 2008 5:52AM
O_o Red Bull plane...
haru @ Dec 10th 2008 5:58AM
Keeps getting better and better, might actually be pretty decent.

I hope since Sony have rights to MLB The Show I can get me A white Sox hat and shirt for HOME when the new one comes out early 09
stephen2005 @ Dec 10th 2008 12:00PM
That would be awesome! Good idea.
Nothing like some nice White Sox stuff to make my Home avatar look awesome.
jadewarlord @ Dec 10th 2008 7:25AM
That would be a good incentive to buy more games, imagine that each game has their own Home areas that are only unlocked for your character if you own or have played the game. e.g. the Uncharted room would only be available to people who have and Uncharted save file or a single uncharted trophy.
Stubs24 @ Dec 10th 2008 10:32AM
Well, I do see that as being a nice feature, but don't you think that is a little unfair? What about the people who didn't entirely buy the PS3 as a gaming console, but more of a media station? I think it would be unfair to those who don't own many games who would like to use Home if they couldn't get into any "owner exclusive" game areas. You have to realize, I am not a current owner of Far Cry 2 but I really want to buy it, and the Far Cry 2 area of Home could push me over the edge to finally pick it up. Home is not only a place for gamers, but a place for marketing as well. A place to preview what is going to come out.
I think it will be safe for all of us to say "Finally (sigh)"
jakrabbit @ Dec 10th 2008 7:31AM
any news on whether the trophy room will be back tomorrow?
since it was not in the closed beta in europe?
jakrabbit @ Dec 10th 2008 7:36AM
sorry just noticed it mentions that it has been put on hold, my mistkae
Jake @ Dec 10th 2008 7:57AM
i was going to say that
they shouldn't be dished out to anyone via competition, you should unlock things by having the game or completing it
would love the motorstorm apartment
i hope that if things do cost money in home it isn't a lot, like sackboy costumes, i just wont pay as its a rip off
should be a £1 and that's still a lot for a costume in a game
ali_D @ Dec 10th 2008 8:33AM
so they are useing trophies like they gonna but IT Should b use as Credit no real cash ffs it still a testing stage *BETA* & anyway where are the DAM psn cards coming 2 euro SONY i got told from the helpline they b out later this year not NEXT YEAR :(

I really didn't expect Sony to be cool or smart enough to involve some type of treasure hunt within Home.
That in itself is absolutely amazing.
After reading this article, I can definitely start seeing the Potential everyone has been talking about.
ck @ Dec 10th 2008 12:56PM
There are plenty of smart people at Sony. Unfortunately they are sometimes drowned out by the stupid people who exist in every organization.
Dan Rabot @ Dec 10th 2008 9:08AM
Finally an end to the "Home is boring" comments!
I'm looking forward to Home, always have understood it's potential, can't wait to get in tomorrow!!!
Finally the naysayers can shut up and stop complaining how the closed beta is.... a beta!
Name: @ Dec 10th 2008 9:08AM
possibility that I might spend more time at home than playin games
Topher08 @ Dec 10th 2008 10:05AM
Yes, this is true, it will die without content. So far there has been NO content and not much to get excited for, so I hope the imminant release of Home will change that.
If Home becomes something that is always in a perpetual state of "this cool feature is coming" then I think it will die quickly. We waited 2 years for Home, waiting months longer for a game space to show up or some other cool feature hyped about in blogs for months will only make me become more anti-Home.
Also what will kill Home quickly is too many micro-transactions. If the only way to create a unique space or avatar (i.e. to have FUN in Home) is to spend a few hundred dollars online, then I think people will not use it. Sony has to be careful not to make Home look like a blatant cash cow. They NEED to give out lots of free content. Also the idea of winning trophies for Home credits will be an awesome way to motivate people to buy and play games on the PS3 with a better reward system then the competition.
But they have to do this now, not 6 - 18 months from now. Home delays are a joke and if Sony releases a product that feels incomplete it will kill Home quickly. Stop claiming what is possible in Home and start showing us.
Gan_Fall @ Dec 10th 2008 10:12AM
I agree with you 100% !!
Gan_Fall @ Dec 10th 2008 10:14AM
I agree 100% !!!
jarhead906 @ Dec 10th 2008 10:42AM
I completely agree.
Well you might be in for a slight disappointment, because the 3D Trophy Room and Party system aren't going to be appearing tomorrow with the Open Beta Home, according to the article (Two things I want the most out of the experience).
nakedatthecomp @ Dec 10th 2008 10:27AM
I think this has serious potential if Sony plays their cards right...
the Red Bull game looks pretty cool too!
jarhead906 @ Dec 10th 2008 10:42AM
You know what I just thought of?
What would be really cool is being able to see a random PSN user playing the Red Bull flying game outside the windows of Home in real time.
Probably not the most realistic thing, but it would make Home that much cooler.
cegmp @ Dec 10th 2008 10:52AM
Man, It's a bad time to be away from home and my PS3. I can't wait for Christmas break.
maxpontiac @ Dec 10th 2008 10:57AM
Amazing.
The more I read, the more I am impressed.
ali_D @ Dec 10th 2008 11:00AM
oh im sorry for you cant read right READ THE THREAD AGAIN what did it say it says HOME can read your trophies & gives you extra content if you read the official home forum they talk about it so you must be a anti-euro then go troll somewere esle i FUCKIN laff if it true & i doubt now ff7 is commin out 2 on the PSN STORE @ xmas SONY SAID that 2.
Popfrogs @ Dec 10th 2008 2:12PM
Babelfish, please save me, you're my only hope.
Jerses @ Dec 10th 2008 11:01AM
*1 PlayStation Home will not be available in some regions.
God damn it!!!!!! Its going to be like the video service... tomorrow i will have a great disappointment, lets just hope im wrong and its not a region lock but more of a will get the service like in 2009
Tez @ Dec 10th 2008 11:11AM
Why is this article credited to Jem Alexander over at Joystiq, but "PS3 Fanboy Staff" here?
Jem @ Dec 10th 2008 6:39PM
Nothing sinister. Just stops me from getting paid twice for the same article. Don't want that now, do we! ;)
Tez @ Dec 10th 2008 6:43PM
Ah, gotcha.
Hife @ Dec 10th 2008 12:21PM
Customizable living space? Go-karts? Holy Sh!t, they really do listen to us! Go-karts is definitely one of the most requested features, and I know I asked for customizable living spaces.
Hife @ Dec 10th 2008 12:25PM
Oh wait, I just realized this might not mean customizable in the sense I was thinking. Oh well.
Nick @ Dec 10th 2008 3:33PM
If all this actually goes through and works the way it should the PS3 should have no problem bringing gamers in. I'm sure Home has cost a pretty penny for Sony to make, so hopefully they receive a return on their investment via PS3 hardware sales and microtransactions.
Barry32171 @ Dec 10th 2008 4:51PM
Looking forward to the new content. Love the idea of Home, but lately, after setting up my apartment and what clothes to wear, playing pool was getting a tad old... Something new to see and possibly do, will be great.
SeneorGoat @ Dec 11th 2008 4:02AM
Is it out yet, and is it out in Aus?
If anyone wants to add me you can. SeneorGoat
abe @ Dec 11th 2008 1:19AM
you know what would be awsome is if company like ea made virtual sport turnaments that you can watch in some sort of stadioumhome maybe the most important ps3 softwear in the consoles life, as for virtual item selling it could be used to improve home along with the adds not to mention paying for the employs (no matter how expensive you make something there will always be people willing to buy, for example if you have an item in home like a t shirt that is worth 10 000$ though that is completly unresanoble a person might buy it because of the status of the item, i can safely say that a person that would do that is insane but there is many crazy people in this world )
kaddy004 @ Dec 11th 2008 7:26AM
Yeah I'm in Australia aswell, and im waiting 4 Home 2 come out so i can download it over night, any ideas how big its gonna be anyone?
Levi @ Dec 23rd 2008 7:42PM
So my thing about a trophy room isssss... what good is a trophy room if nobody comes to check em out? And even then, who cares? You could just tell the person, "Hey I got the bomber trophy in SSHD!" Nobody's gonna go, "Yeah right, let's see your 3D trophy!!"
I personally think clan integration and game launching have potential
