Travis S. asks: I have a wireless network in my home and at first glance my PS3 seems to like it. I can get on the PSN fine. The problem I am having is when I try to download an update to a game it errors out. I would also like to start playing online and check out Home when it comes. I have little trouble downloading demos (takes around 30 min). I have called my service provider and the network setting looks good. Is there something I am missing like needing to open a port or something?
PS3F answers: It sounds like you might have a firewall issue. You will need to open TCP/UDP ports. You'll want to contact your network service provider on how to do that, as we can't do that without knowing further information on your setup. We can, however, advise you on what those TCP/UDP ports are; we've listed them below:
Ports for First-Party PlayStation Game Servers:
- TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223, and 10070 - 10080
- UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658, 10070, and 50100
- TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223
- UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658
John D. asks: My internet gets really screwy at home. Sometimes downloads timeout and don't get done. It's really annoying whenever you have to download a mandatory update patch. Since my internet is keeping me from downloading the thing, I can't play my game. Is there any way I can play my game without downloading the patch?
PS3F answers: Yes. You will need to disable the internet connection under "Network Settings" that way your PS3 won't auto-detect an internet connection, thereby not detecting an available patch. You'll have to turn it back on if you want to access any online components such as PS Store or online gaming.

Conor M. asks: When I'm buying a new TV for my PS3, is there any way for me to know what size to get, and how far back I should sit from it?
PS3F answers: No matter what size television you have you should always sit at least six to eight feet away from the screen. Seriously, what's the point of getting a bigger screen if you're just going to sit proportionately further and further away from it? As for a size, you'll want to physically walk into a store and look at the sizes for yourself so you can get a feel for what fits best in your home and for your needs. A 32-inch HDTV is a good start as most games support 720p/1080i and that sort of resolution looks great on a 32'er. Any screen size bigger than that is already going into 1080p territory.
Evan S. asks: In a previous article, you stated that National Geographic Africa was coming to the US this month. Can we get an update, now that it's December, and will this game be on the PSN?
PS3F answers: We currently do not have further information regarding the release date other than that article which you've mentioned. Though, we just want to point out to you and everyone else that's interested in this title that it will be Blu-ray disc-based.
akshaycaussy asks: I would like to know if the US has a video download system which allows them to download full movies, such as the Dark Knight or any film released on DVD/Blu-Ray. Further to that, will Europe be getting a similar system? I heard Vidzone was coming for Europe but that's only Music Videos.
PS3F answers: Yes, the US PlayStation Store has a video section dedicated to the purchase and rental of both SD and HD digital content. The video store option will only appear if you actually live in the United States. As for Europe, the closest thing to something of this sort is Play TV which lets PS3 owners "watch, record and replay digital TV on PS3." Europe also has something called Go! View which is a download service and is more like the US video store you're asking about, but this is only available for PSP.

Also, about that networking issue the first guy had, make sure you allow UPNP stuff on your router. If the PS3 can use the router's UPNP functions, it'll open ports as needed and your online gaming life will work alot better.

Why should I 'always sit at least six to eight feet away from the screen'?
You know what your mom told you about sitting too close affecting your eyesight was false right?
-slycooper_rocker- (lorddshadow the amazing) psn: shahanasalam @ Dec 14th 2008 2:22AM
yeah that explains why i went to the optometrist and found out i had 20/80 vision after playing cod4 for a month sitting about 5 ft away from the tv.

is there any chance sony make a psn store to cyprus region? so i can play with my main account in home....:(
JohnYLaw @ Jan 7th 2009 8:27AM
i have spoken with sony and asked them about play tv, ps3 store and Home in Cyprus and they have said that none of the above are yet supported in cyprus. however, although no fixed time have been provided by sony, it is beleived that very soon the ps3 store will be available in cyprus.
Daniel @ Dec 14th 2008 4:15AM
here is the TV size/distance "rule":
divide the size of your tv (in inches) 4. that number is how many feet from the screen you should sit. i have noticed that this is a good rule for movies and TV, but for games i like to sit closer.
example: 40 inches/4 = 10 feet away.
you're welcome.

For those who don't want to wait for the US version of Afrika, you can get it from Play-Asia (English/Chinese version) here:

is it possible to download sf2hd from the US store in the uk? do i need a us credit card? what about those points cards u can get in game or whatever? and if its possible will everyting still funtion fine, like online play? cheers
Peter @ Dec 14th 2008 6:26AM
That's how I got it, buy a points card off of ebay, make a US PSN account in a state with no after-sales tax (a bit like VAT) such as PA, find the address of a Denny's or something over there so the post code works.
Buy game. Once you downloaded it, you can install and play with any account on your PS3, just don't delete the American account or it'll stop working. Then you can use the US one to access Home and whatnot anyway.
Hell Overlord @ Dec 14th 2008 6:11AM

bayn @ Dec 14th 2008 10:55AM
@12
Actually that depends on your goals, average "av" enthusiast rule is roughly 1.5x the screen width (not diagnal) You'll quickly realize that is much closer than most people sit but the position is close to THX specs for an "immersive" view. (I sat roughly 12ft from my 118" screen)
The second rule is of course let your eyes decide but most people not in the av hobby sit too far from the screen to make proper use of the resolution.
At 10ft from a 40" screen you may as well get a 720p tv and save the money since the visual difference between it and a 1080p tv will not be seen since you are so far away.
Here is also a great calculator to help those curious:
http://myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html
but remember, its still up to what you are comfortable with.
Moris @ Dec 14th 2008 11:37AM
Heyy Travis, that problem happened to me as well. If the problem isnt solved by the answer posted, Try making sure that "Media Server Connection" is disabled. (This option is located in Setting>Network Connections... Should be the last option)
That fixed any problems i had updating the system, or patching games =]
Aaron @ Dec 14th 2008 2:33PM
To John D.'s question:
When you launch a game and it requires a patch update, just press the circle button to skip it. You'll be signed out of the PSN, but it's a lot easier than go the Network Settings and blah blah blah everytime you want to play a game.
