SingStar backwards compatability patch arrives December 16th
Sony has announced (via ThreeSpeech) that the SingStar PS3 backwards compatability patch is on its way very soon. Tomorrow, in fact. The patch, which will allow you to switch between PS3 and PS2 SingStar discs without quitting the game. It's a feature that's been highly anticipated and which was announced at the Leipzig Game Convention this year.
The patch will arrive on December 16th at 10am GTM (EST +5) and will be automatically downloaded when you start up the game. Not only will this remove those awkward atmospheric lulls during parties, but it should add My SingStar Online functionality to the entire SingStar back catalog.

Kinda weird thing to add seeing as a good amount of PS3 owners don't have a backwards-compatible PS3. Cool but sucks for those with the 40gb, new 80gb or 160gb PS3s who have Singstar!

Actually, it's meant to work with any model, regardless of BC. Probably just reads the song data from the discs and not actually runs the game itself...
Good idea if you ask me, but Rock Band 2 importing of Rock Band 1 songs is still better.
Mana Knight @ Dec 15th 2008 8:33PM
Song data is being read from the discs, that's all. It's not actually playing a PS2 game.
MySingStar Online will not work with the PS2 discs I heard, because I believe it's stored on the HDD (or well, I thought I remember hearing you cannot upload videos from PS2 songs online).

"but it should add My SingStar Online functionality to the entire SingStar back catalog."
Yeah, this sounds like conjecture/wishful thinking rather than anything that has been confirmed.
Can you back that up Jem?

I just got volume to today, this is cool but I don't wanna have to buy every disc for songs i want. Add SONGs to the damn SingStore. 400 songs on the singstore?? i mean WTF that's pathetic. I got a launch PS3 though so if I like a certain older copy now it's not an issue which is cool either way. but those songs should be on the store for those you got a recent recent and won't to get older songs,. this patch is intented for those who've owned PS2 singstars and later got a PS3 version

My copy of Singstar Legends chokes when I use this swap patch. (80s, Amped and Rocks worked fine for me.) Anyone else have a problem swapping in Legends?
Semi @ Dec 16th 2008 10:13AM
singstar bollywood will work? please tell me it will...
JBurger @ Dec 16th 2008 11:17AM
Has anyone successfully been able to install the patch on a US/NTSC PS3, and then be able to swap and play songs from a European/PAL Singstar disc i.e. Disney Singstar/Queen Singstar?
JimJimBinks @ Dec 17th 2008 7:04AM
I would LOVE to know the answer to this question. I want to play Singstar: Sing along with Disney on my US/NTSC PS3. If someone could test this it would be much appreciated.
Semi @ Dec 17th 2008 7:30AM
some user put:
Singstar Singalong with Disney doesn’t work for me - says ‘This is not a Singstar disc’. Could be because I have a US PS3 though :(

NOPE! I just recieved my imported Singstar Disney PS2 disc from the UK, and when I do the Singstar PS3 disc swap it says "this is not a Singstar disc".
I am HUGELY disappointed.

Singstar Bollywood does not work with this patch
Semi @ Dec 17th 2008 6:06AM
are you serious?
why not?
Semi @ Dec 17th 2008 7:31AM
really happy that i didnt rush out and buy the singstar bollywood...
wonder if they will fix it...
KanesFist @ Dec 19th 2008 9:04PM
Has anybody encountered this problem:
If you discswap from singstar vol2 onto ABBA .... and while on the abba disc then try and play one of the singstar vol2 songs ..... you end up with distorted lyrics or none at all ?
The music is still there but wtf ... stupidly I tried it again doh and ruined another song ..... and yes .... of course I then ruined another one by accident.
You end up screwing the one you tried to play on the other disc AND whatever you happened to last play on the ABBA one?????
Please tell me their is a fix .... what a time to have problems... the only reason i got this was for the festive.
Nigma @ Jan 15th 2009 12:12PM
I can also confirm Singstar Bollywood does NOT work- and also that Sony European support are next to useless when it comes to this problem.
