'Whole slew of downloadable PSP and PSone titles' coming from Capcom in 09

Capcom has released a number of great PSP games which we'd love to see re-released on the PlayStation Store. Mega Man Powered Up, anyone? However, their PSone offerings have us even more excited. Let's not forget that they released Breath of Fire, Marvel vs. Capcom, a whole slew of Mega Man games, Resident Evil and Street Fighter games during the PSone era. Having them on the go would be perfect.

Sounds interesting, Here's to hoping they will rerelease Breath of Fire 1, 2 and 4. I already have 3 but my UMD case for it broke so I cannot play it anymore.
Resi releases'll be nice too. PSP/3 will be soo much better with support from these guys!
lasersanchez @ Dec 28th 2008 3:49AM
Not sure how hard your UMD case broke, but I've had two games where the clear lid on the front fell off. Tape fixed it up just fine.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Dec 28th 2008 9:54AM
blasted UMD Cases......
I think that the PSP2 should go towards a Download Only Model......via the PS Store......have locations set up in major stores for a Wi-fi connection to buy games from the store....less pirated games SHOULD mean more revenue...........not to mention no reselling of PSP2 games..........
I would LOVE to be able to download ALL PSP games from the store and have them on a 16GB Memory Stick.....
Gurbinder @ Dec 27th 2008 6:16PM
megaman maverick hunter x on psn perhaps? That game was seriously underrated. It was great but no one took notice.
Kattleox @ Dec 27th 2008 9:18PM
Likewise for power stone, which would be awesome as a download for PSP, preferably with game sharing. The potential there was enormous, but it didn't do well enough in sales to make any difference.
Kia @ Dec 27th 2008 6:18PM
It's sad when you're all hoping for titles to simply be released on PSN -again- rather than hoping Capcom does something actually new.
It's like we know what's happening with PSP and we've just given up pretending to hope for real content by now.
atastysammich @ Dec 27th 2008 6:21PM
Or we're fuming with genuine disappointment that we're not playing Megaman 9 on our PSPs.
Kia @ Dec 28th 2008 12:43PM
And yet you prove my point, hoping for a simple port rather than something real. Thanks for that.
atastysammich @ Dec 29th 2008 11:43AM
My pleasure.
Ben @ Dec 27th 2008 7:09PM
Capcom being my favorite Japanese publisher/developer/whatever, this news makes me squeel. In a manly way.
Darlaten @ Dec 27th 2008 7:39PM
I agree with what Kia (post #3) said - it is sad that we all seem to be just waiting for these old titles, or PS1, games to come out for the PSP. While these might be good, and I appreciate being able to play PS1 games on the device, I certainly didn't purchase it to play "out of date" games. I'm sorry, I want to play games that use the graphics capabilities of the PSP - not play stuff that looks really old and dated.
Again, I'm not saying that its bad that we can do this but I find it odd that there seems to be a shift in the pspfandom whereby we're not demanding, or talking about, or excited about anything new - we're only simply wanting what's old.
So, with that light, I'm hoping that Capcom develops a Devil May Cry for the PSP! Bring on the new stuff.
Zippon @ Dec 27th 2008 11:34PM
Maybe its because retreads is the best we can hope for? Developers aren't stupid. They all noticed low sales plus incredibly high illegal download numbers for their titles and decided the PSP simply wasn't worth it compared to other systems. (Cue the various excuses that blame everybody EXCEPT the consumers and pirates.) Truth be told, the PSP was too good for its time. The tech savvy crowd bought it, and they are the same crowd that likes to steal rather than buy (since it is so much cooler). If people bought games rather than downloaded them illegally, we'd have new titles. But that isn't the case, so PS1 releases is as good as it gets.
:-(
lasersanchez @ Dec 28th 2008 6:20PM
Zippon, I'm a bit confused by your aside on "blaming the consumer". Unlike pirates, legitimate consumers are not to blame at all. They buy the games. They do their part. That is, unless they're buying used. I have a few legitimate PSP games, but I bought them second-hand. This does not help the company at all, correct? So it only makes sense to release games that can only be found used on a service in which I can download them and get more of my money to the publisher and developer.
I'm not about to defend piracy, but I'm willing to bet a few people out there download games just to try them out (it might be a low percentage, but it's a percentage). $40 is an awfully high asking price for many PSP games. I easily jumped on new games at $10-20, but held off on Crisis Core and God of War simply because they were too expensive on release. I mean, what if I didn't like them at all?
Personally, I feel like smaller, cheaper, episodic games are what we're heading for. Let's assume that $20 of the cost of a UMD copy of a game actually goes to the developer and publisher, while the other amount goes to the retailer. Would I be more likely to simply pay $5 for part 1 of 4 of God of War? Absolutely! $5 is an awesome deal for a few hours of entertainment, and even if I don't like the game, I'm only out $5. Maybe I'll end up trying a wider variety of games too instead of just spending money on the heavy hitters. So now I've spent the money they wanted on the full experience, and have a copy I can't regift at Game Stop. Which normally would suck, but I'd just be happy I got so much game at 5 bucks a pop.
I feel this is reflected in the developers desires to put out old games for download. Get a few bucks at a time. It's hard to justify a $40 purchase sometimes. I feel like this is why Square-Enix does so well on the PSP. Their fans just love having an entire collection. (hell, Final Fantasy Tactics is the only $40 game I've bought). But there's hope with these new tactics with the download store. Don't count the PSP, or its fanbase out just yet.

@ Zippon
the DS, which is 100 times easier to play pirated games on, has higher game sales. blaming piracy & consumers is over-simplifying it.
personally, i chalk the PSP's decline to the fact that it stumbled out of that gate, and even to this day, still has a smaller library of must-own titles. not to mention the fact that most of the higher-profile mainstream titles are watered-down step-children of existing PS2 games, i.e., ratchet & clank, god of war, mgs, etc. those aren't bad games in the least, but i'd much rather play their consoles counterparts, and not have to worry about awful camera/aiming controls and a stiff, unresponsive analog stick.
Zippon @ Dec 28th 2008 6:19PM
>the DS, which is 100 times easier to play pirated games on, has higher game sales. blaming piracy & consumers is over-simplifying it.
I see this comment about the DS being easier to pirate a lot. But the second half of your statement is the key: it still has higher game sales. It doesn't matter in the slightest which is EASIER to pirate. Re-read my post: "it is low sales PLUS high download numbers" that scared developers away. Who cares WHICH system is easier to pirate on? What matters is HOW MUCH PIRACY is taking place, relative to sales. The DS appeals to a younger, less tech-savvy crowd. They are much less likely to mod their system than an older, more tech-savvy PSP owner. And once it is modded, piracy takes place (100% of pirates use modded PSP's--I don't care about the 1 or 2% of modded PSP's that are free of illegal ISO's).
Read any DS forum and any PSP forum. DS forums discuss games (most of the time), PSP forums always discuss how to steal games. If PSP owners bought software, developers would make software. It is as simple as that. Blaming a stiff analog stick is a very long walk to avoid a simple answer. :-/
Shoyz @ Dec 27th 2008 8:37PM
Resident Evil PSP
Plox?
sony boy @ Dec 27th 2008 9:47PM
what happened to the promise devil may cry, hmm? anyway, thanks capcom!
why don't you release the mega man anniversary collection? make it psp compatible.
possibly release strider *blink* *blink*
Jeremy @ Dec 27th 2008 9:51PM
Bleh. I'd rather see some real games, like DMC PSP or a Resident Evil PSP. Somehow they can put out RE for mobile phones but not the PSP?
I know not everything they've made has sold well, but all in all, the PSP has been very good for Capcom, let's see some of that love returned.
richard @ Dec 27th 2008 11:13PM
Have you seen RE on the cell phone??? I want my 5$ back!!!
PSN: Erdie @ Dec 27th 2008 10:32PM
It might be good news for some, but I've already got all their games I'm interested in. I'll continue hoping for new stuff.
Ben @ Dec 28th 2008 12:40AM
Nobody ever said that the downloadable PSP games were re-releases.
Jacksons @ Dec 28th 2008 10:45AM
"You can expect to see a whole slew of downloadable PSP and PSone titles from our vault next year."
Ben @ Dec 28th 2008 10:52AM
Ambiguous at best.
Jacksons @ Dec 28th 2008 11:15AM
Here's hoping.
linebeginstoblur @ Dec 28th 2008 1:37AM
Remote Play for Bionic Commando Rearmed is nice, but the only times in which it would be nice to use it are times in which it is impossible to use it. (Lack of Wi-Fi, barriers to logging into PSN, etc.)
If a PSP-only version of BCR is released (a la flOw, Everyday Shooter, etc.) I will buy it in a heartbeat.
(Although that PS3 trophy patch is actually a higher priority for me...)
daniel-kun @ Dec 28th 2008 6:14AM
I want Resident Evil 2 and Street Fighter Ex Plus Alpha
Dr Haisook @ Dec 28th 2008 6:40AM
For the millionth time you guys are talking about piracy and its effect on PSP sales. It's not piracy.
It's Nintendo.
The market for gaming handhelds could not tolerate anything other than Nintendo. If Sony really wanted to beat Nintendo, they should've marketed the PSP and its games at a lower price than the DS. That was the only way I think.
Having said that, Sony has still had a success with the PSP, being their first gaming handheld. The hardware sales alone are not bad at all. I'm sure Sony wasn't expecting to beat Nintendo in the first place.
Bowser Rogozhin @ Dec 28th 2008 7:33AM
It's a multitude of factors, but to just declare that piracy a non-issue is plainly pulling a veil over your eyes. Yes, the Nintendo DS is strong, but that strength cannot explain away why new games for the PSP, in the West, are practically non-existent.
When Europe only sees one worthwhile release in the entire Christmas period, and America sees none, you've got to look and analyse every conceivable angle. Why are developers fleeing the PSP? Why are Sony abandoning their best selling console this generation? Becuase there's little money to be had, that's why. Piracy is one, of many, factors.
PSN: Erdie @ Dec 28th 2008 11:14AM
I'm amazed the PSP continues to sell as well as it does in the USA with the amount of games released. I bought every PSP game released in 2008 that I had an interest in--5 games.
I bought even less for my DS this year, which sort of nullifies my point, but whatever.
imbecile pete @ Dec 28th 2008 12:51PM
resident evil on PSP=WIN WIN WIN!!
Acteon @ Dec 28th 2008 3:09PM
I want to get behind this, I really do, but I'm still seething about the lack of SF2HD on PS3 in Europe, and Capcom's refusal to comment.
So far as piracy goes, yeah it's a problem but it's not unique to PSP. Other niggles remain, cheifly that Sony had the chance to do with PSP what Virtual Console did for the Wii, but it's probably too late to catch up now.
As for the PSP's future, the West may suffer, but I've been buying up a storm of Japanese releases, including Gundam vs Gundam and Macross Ace Frontier. What we need is more translations of the better games for the West (Pangya Golf would be awesome) but clearly there are few publishers outside NiS that consider it worthwhile, and frankly without NiS the PSP schedules in the West wouldn't be worth buying a system for.
aj @ Dec 28th 2008 6:19PM
I want Breath of Fire 3 in North America.
No PSN store crap. Just BoF3.
bryan @ Dec 28th 2008 6:20PM
nice effort from capcom to pick up sonys slack. i love playing mega manx5 and the resident evils on my psp glade to hear it will soon be available to the masses. what we really need is some new games.
zonic505 @ Dec 28th 2008 8:44PM
Being able to download Marvel Vs. Capcom to play on PSP would be AWESOME! Not to mention I'd like to play Cyberbots (Jin!), Mega Man Legends 2, Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Rival Schools (Batsu!), & Strider 2.
Mistah` @ Dec 29th 2008 12:38AM
Who knows, we may get a Bionic Commando and Mega Man 9 release for the PSP, both which will be boughten in a heartbeat.
Seriously, Capcom has some amazing franchises. I don't care if it is new, old, remakes, downloads, etc. I love what Capcom has to offer. So instead of bashing this news, we should embrace it. At least we're getting something.
BTW, I'd like Mega Man ZX as well on PSP.
bombedstar @ Dec 29th 2008 7:57AM
did anyone forget about viewtiful joe?! that was awesome on the gamecube! bring it to psp plz! also, make monster hunter downloadable would be a dream come true
Maedhros @ Dec 29th 2008 11:09PM
I just want Marverick Hunter X 2 or Megaman Powered Up 2.
Level 5 @ Dec 30th 2008 12:37PM
PSone versions of Street Fighter? No, no, NO! Capcom needs to suck it up, write an emulator for their arcade hardware, and PUT THEM UP! It would be a much better experience for the consumer. The PSone versions of anything CPS-1 and above were MORTIFYING due to the lack of video RAM. Cut animation, crappy remixed music.. why? Lisence MAME or something for crying out loud.
cylet @ Dec 30th 2008 5:34PM
I don't really care what they release, I genuinely love all Capcom games, as long as they release the "slew of downloadable" stuff soon. I can only last so long with Street Fighter Alpha.
styroteqe @ Jan 3rd 2009 5:16PM
I would take classic Capcom releases just as quickly as new ones. While some people may not want to play re-treads, I think they are valid releases, and especially since most of them were not Portable when first released. That is the key factor, the PSP is a PORTABLE gaming device.
I would love for them to release Street Fighter III:3rd Strike for PSP in some fashion. They should stick to PSN for such releases and only release the newer games on UMD. Sales would probably be low on a UMD release of SF3, but I am sure there are tons of people who would pick it up off the PSN Store for $9.99.
Joe @ Jan 8th 2009 7:42PM
Bring Resident Evil and Devil May Cry to the PSP ..not old ones but new one please Capcom or Sony =\
Aimee* @ Feb 9th 2009 10:54AM
I hope they would released a Resident Evil and Devil May Cry Portable on PSP ^___^
