Uncharted 2 details revealed in latest EDGE

Those lucky so-and-sos at EDGE have had some eyes-on time with upcoming half-tuck-em-up Uncharted 2. The preview in the latest issue reveals a lot of backstory as well as quelling our fears about the potential of those stealth sections. Fans of Nathan Drake will be happy to hear that Uncharted 2 will delve further into his character, showing that while he's "affable and charming, he can also be a jerk."
No longer is Nathan on a quest for Francis Drake, instead he's turned his sights to Marco Polo, whose journey back to Europe from the court of Kublai Khan saw his 600-man fleet dwindle to just a dozen survivors. Ultimately Drake's journey will lead him to Tibet and an ancient city, which is said to house a gem that can grant wishes. The story in this game will allow for plenty of variety in the environments you'll be visiting.
Naughty Dog also clarifies what they mean by a "stealth mechanic," which put many people on edge when the game was announced. There is no intention of turning Uncharted into the next Splinter Cell; "stealth just gives you something more in the toolbox - another element, another choice that's available to you. Stealth or shooting - both choices are valid at any time." There's plenty more interesting stuff to read in the full article. It's certainly done a good job getting us even more excited about what's to come from Naughty Dog next year.

The screenshots in Game Informer looked amazing. I think Uncharted is one of the best games of the year. I for one, can't wait to get my hands on part 2.
Dehshizknight @ Dec 31st 2008 12:05AM
You meant 2007, right? ;)
I'm just playing. I agree. It was my favorite PS3 game for a while. Of course MGS4 had to come and ruin everything...
Levi @ Dec 31st 2008 11:54AM
Yeah dude. Uncharted surprised me. I think it was the first game I got for PS3 that took my by surprise. They sound like they are doing nothing but improving on the first game with this one. I want to hear more about the 'climb anywhere' engine that we've briefly heard.
The option for sneaking around is a good one too - as long as both options are viable in the majority of situations. I don't like being forced to sneak, but I love the option. It's sometimes annoying in these games to WANT to avoid these few enemies, but they have IR vision or something and always see you.
warlock7 @ Dec 30th 2008 9:52PM
This is going to be a great game...
TroubleMaker @ Dec 30th 2008 10:23PM
Uncharted was the best game i have ever played, i can't wait for Uncharted 2
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Dec 30th 2008 10:26PM
I can't wait...seriously!
BTW I just finished replaying Uncharted today for the 13th time. Still a great game!
Game_playa @ Dec 30th 2008 11:53PM
I stopped at the Zombie part
Rich @ Dec 31st 2008 12:26AM
Same here! I was completely enthralled until it degenerated into just another zombie game. It's the same reason I stopped playing Dark Sector early on.
Hopefully Uncharted 2 keeps the zombies out of it.
AltCtrlPwn @ Dec 31st 2008 12:59AM
@Rich
It hardly degenerated into just another zombie game -- but you wouldn't know if you didn't finish the game.
Swamp Donkey @ Dec 31st 2008 8:51AM
Well you guys quit about 30 minutes from the end of the game, so that's unfortunate, as the "zombie part" was over quickly and then back to fighting men. The end was also very fun and entertaining.
I just finished this game for the second time on hard, and am ready to dive back in for a third run on the hardest difficulty.
Best game I've played in years.
Eric E @ Dec 31st 2008 9:25AM
Everyone has been borrowing mine but i just got it back and am just out of the library on Crushing, trying to get my trophies that weren't available at first.
I was turned off by Zombies too but its a small part and it returns to normal then ends so just finish it, unless your scared.
And i wasnt worried about stealth, the first had stealth and its a trophie (attack 20 people from behind).
Im sure they just plan to add more of it, a 'slow walk', silencer, improved AI, etc. In the first everyone was alerted to when you stealth killed a guy no matter what.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 1st 2009 1:32AM
Wow, did you really think it would end that way? The zombies are very easy to fight, they would have been a lousy ending. In some areas, you actually have unlimited ammo even!
There's two zombie levels, then one with men and zombies, and then it's back to just men.
To be honest, the level that concludes the story is too short, and the ultimate level isn't any fun to play on any skill level. So you really only missed one level that you'd regret missing (if you knew).
Honestly, I didn't have any problems with the zombies. They bring a new change to the fighting mechanics at a point when the game needed a change.
I played the game through, got all 1000 pts. Crushing is pretty nasty, to be honest. One change I'd really like to see in the 2nd one is that crushing shouldn't disable the alternate skins. I'd already played the game through twice as Drake, it would have been nice to play it through as one of the alternate skins, and since the skins don't make it easier or harder, I don't know why they locked that out.
Uncharted was a great game. I can't wait to play the sequel. I sure hope The Girl (Elena) is in it though.
Gaucho @ Dec 30th 2008 10:52PM
Absolute greatness. can't wait!
comctrl6 @ Dec 30th 2008 11:06PM
"stealth just gives you something more in the toolbox - another element, another choice that's available to you. Stealth or shooting - both choices are valid at any time."
All the "lethal" weapons will be colored red and all the non-lethal ones will be colored blue and if you kill all the bosses with the blue weapons you will get 4 statues that will give a powerful non-lethal weapons. Can't wait for this game!
Dartmerc @ Dec 30th 2008 11:53PM
I'm pretty sure the stealth elements in MGS are a little deeper than nonlethal weapons.
comctrl6 @ Dec 31st 2008 12:01AM
After reading my own post it does sound a little condescending, which was not my intent. I was merely trying to outline the awesomeness of MSG hidden stealth features, one of the which is the one I described. That one seems to be the coolest to me, since I accidentally discovered it. Either way, the more stealthy gameplay they put into the game, without compromising the normal, "shoot 'em all" gamely, the better.
KiraXD @ Dec 30th 2008 11:51PM
i thought i read this a few weeks ago when all the VGA release goodness emerged? i think on GAF.

All the information in this post was talked about in the most recent issue of Game Informer...
John S @ Dec 31st 2008 12:51AM
I need a release date and more footage
Organic_Shadow @ Dec 31st 2008 12:51AM
can't wait. glad they're smart about the stealth mechanic too. ALSO applaud them for not messing with the engine too much. just fine tuning it and making it work better instead of shoehorning bells and whistles in.
i don't really care about what the story will be. i know it will be good, and what the last indy movie SHOULD have been like. this is great 'treasure adventure' stuff.
Byron517 @ Dec 31st 2008 1:03AM
Another awesome game to add to the '09 lineup!! I can't wait to see this in action!!
RagingStormX @ Dec 31st 2008 1:16AM
Definately a day one purchase for me....I hope there is a collectors edition......I can see another platinum trophy now ^_^ ....Side note....is anyone else having a problem sending messages on PSN?
RagingStormX @ Dec 31st 2008 1:20AM
ok.....change that, PSN is dead at the moment lol
PSN: Erdie @ Dec 31st 2008 1:59AM
I don't really want to hear about it yet, it'll make these the longest 11 months ever.
Can't wait.
Popfrogs @ Dec 31st 2008 2:01AM
We'll have KZ2, SF4 and a handful of other sequels to keep us busy until this game comes out. I want it bad too. :)
NipGrip @ Dec 31st 2008 2:17AM
Speaking of Uncharted.. Ever wanted to know how to get behind the bar in Sully's Bar in HOME? TEAM ALPHA shows you here:

I'm hoping there is an Uncharted Portable being readied for simultaneous release for the PSP.
JakeDunn @ Dec 31st 2008 4:47AM
So release date anyone?
Light @ Dec 31st 2008 7:37AM
That's what I wanna hear! Great. Can't wait.
Smitty @ Dec 31st 2008 7:51AM
Any Uncharted news is good news! Bring it on!
kentuckyfried @ Dec 31st 2008 8:55AM
Umm....why would stealth elements added to an already excellent game be a problem?
I suppose an enemy AI which makes a beeline for your exact location, even when you're hiding, makes for a great video game? lol.
That's something that's always bothered me about certain games (Dead Space, as fun as it was, had this problem). So if there's a title that can give you multiple ways to achieve the same objectives, I'm all for it, that's what made parts of MGS4 outstanding.
Mo @ Dec 31st 2008 11:20AM
indeed... more than one way to skin a cat... Plus I can't resist tagging on praise for mgs4 :-)
colinbell @ Dec 31st 2008 1:09PM
Just bring back the girl and the sidekick somehow, please - Uncharted was fun mainly because of all three of them together.
Dan Rabot @ Jan 2nd 2009 7:59AM
I bought uncharted a while back but it wouldn't run on my PS3, some loading error. Think it was an old disc (pre-owned) but was totally scratch free.
Shame, I missed out on this one because of that.
Anyone else have that problem?
polgas @ Jan 8th 2009 9:24AM
damn this will be the longest year! can't wait..
the stealth mechanic already in uncharted 1
it's the part where you choke someone from behind
i guess they will just add new moves or stealth where you don't have to kill guards in order to move on...
but whatever they do, it will still be a great game cause the 1st was great already
