PS3 Game of the Year, as chosen by other media outlets

Last year, critics were pretty much unanimous about one choice: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. However, the diversity of PS3's lineup this year shows how even the critics are varied in their choice for PS3 GOTY. Here are what some other outlets chose:
- GamePro chose LittleBigPlanet as PS3 and overall GOTY. "Despite the deluge of ultra-violent shooters, our favorite game this year was the user-fueled platforming fun of LittleBigPlanet."
- GameTrailers chose Grand Theft Auto 4 as PS3 and overall GOTY. "The game manages to create characters and situations that make you genuinely care."
- GameSpot chose Metal Gear Solid 4 as PS3 and overall GOTY. "It's surprisingly easy to pick up and, at the risk of sounding cliche, it's almost impossible to put down even after you've beaten it."
- GameSpy chose LittleBigPlanet (but chose Fallout 3 as its overall GOTY). "There's nothing like this game anywhere else, and that's the beauty of LittleBigPlanet."
- IGN chose Metal Gear Solid 4. "Metal Gear Solid managed to tie almost every plot point together, piled on the cinematic flair and played more accessibly than any previous game in the series"
- Joystiq chose Metal Gear Solid 4 as their top PS3 game of the year. "MGS4 experiments with previously unknown possibilities of the medium (you know, it's "innovative"), while sticking to some established conventions."

I don't know as I've only played the demo for MGS4, but for me it had too much staring and following weird old guy butt which made it awkward and ugly (seriously, the butt thing was a total turn off for me).
GTA4 on the other hand is a blast of which I still enjoy.

Get Metal Gear Solid: Essential Collection. I never played Metal Gear Solid before, and I never knew what everyone was talking about... but I just beat the first one, and now I'm on the second...It's Awesome!!

Metal Gear Essential Collection was probably the best 30 dollars I've ever spent. Sure, MGS1 was awesome, 2 was pretty good, but MGS3 is just a masterpiece. Aside from Mario Bros. 3 it's probably my favorite game of all time; just about as transcendental an experience as video games can get, for me at least.

Agreed. Too many generic games out there, especially on the 360. Alien shooters like GoW and HALO don't really interest me.
I like games that break from instant action and teenage alien violence. MGS4, like all MGS games, broke from the pack by being a stealth game whose point is to not kill everyone, and had a fantastic storyline that wasn't spat out by some poll of pubescent fantasies. LittleBigPlanet is totally out on it's own - it's totally unique, and is really about having fun playing games.
Some awesome games out last year. Looking forward to the upcoming titles.

Yea, its good to see MGS4 and LBP on top. They are both truly awesome. I would say my 3rd favorite is Battlefield Bad Company as I play it online with my friends all the time and it's amazing.

GTA GOTY?! Sure if you don't mind the choppy frame rate, half-rendered graphics, useless driving controls, load times, lack of checkpoints...maybe they're being sarcastic. It has it's moments for sure, but overall GTA was one of the worst 360-to-PS3 ports I've seen. Hope Rockstar can figure out how to use the Cell next time...

Also GTA4 have autosave feature. If you finish a mission it autosave. :P
MGS4 is a great game...but sometimes i feel like skipping the cutscenes..too much information and less action!

OddyOh, what are you talking about? GTA 4 is on par, if not better looking than the 360 version. IMO it's one of the better ports. You want a shoddy port? Check out Madden 08...ugh!
The driving controls, while not GTA-ish, I thought were great but that boils down to personal preference.
Overall though MGS4 is a better game. Truly epic.

All I know it that game is choppy like nothing I've seen before...maybe that's how it is on Xbox, but wow. Unplayable when you get enough cars onscreen at once. I stand by my comments. :)
NHL 08 was a choppy mess as well, fortunately NHL 09 has smoother gameplay...cut scenes are still a mess, but whatever.

Yeah, I hear ya. The frame rate did definitely suck at times.. especially when crashing in to a bunch of boxes. It also has severe aliasing issues (or at least it did on my tv).
Seems as if everyone hated this GTA. Maybe the more realistic approach took away from the traditional GTA feel. Guess i'm one of the few who really enjoyed it.

Sold it back, bought Saints' Row 2, and am having far more fun with it than I ever had with GTA IV.

i always looked to ign for reviews. most of their reviews are spot on with some notable exceptions like everyday shooter and super stardust on psp and GTA IV. i just wish their site was easier to navigate. i always have problems finding specific stuff there while here i could find it in a second. but otherwise, they're great. although this might just be bias considering how many awards they gave patapon. pata-pata-pata-pon!!!

Fixed that for them. And go MGS4! It really deserved GOTY. As good as LBP is, it wasn't finished at launch (buggy online and the play, create, share scores are still broken). MediaMolecule has been good about patching it and I love the Paintenator though.

You've got to be kidding. MGS4 isn't a GAME. It's a movie with minor, tiny interactive moments. I HATED this P.O.S. and completely disagree that it deserves any kind of award.
Here's how much I hated it: I have the MGS4 PS3 80GB bundle, and even though I tried to play through this boring, uninspired, heavily ripped-off piece of crap, I still ended up selling the game that was the centerpiece of the bundle I purchased. I played it for about three hours, and after that point- when it barely progressed beyond the opening (highly self-indulgent) credits, I gave up.
But then, I hated Gears of War on the 360, too. I dislike the Final Fantasy series as well. Why? Because I want to PLAY my games, not watch some drawn-out, pathetic attempt at making a movie that barely includes me in the process. What do all those games have in common? Long cinemas, gaming on rails, and a complete lack of player choice. We're just bit players in Hideo Kojima's movie, doing what HE wants us to do in order to tell HIS story. THAT IS NO DAMNED FUN!
Bad call on this one. I can't agree with it, and I think all the critics are plainly phoning this one in. GTA IV was far better, but even that doesn't deserve Game Of The Year.
I don't know what SHOULD win, but not "Metal Gear Solid IV: Kojima Steals More Scenes From Cult Movies".
Critics: You're all either HIGH or sell-outs. Did Kojima threaten you personally, or something?

Since most outlets gave the 360 Fallout 3 as there game of the year, which is also on PS3, that means MGS4 > Fallout 3. Which inturn means we had the best game of the year overall. That's what you get when your best game is a multiplatform

I must be the only person alive who hasn't played nor cares for GTA4. I could never finish any of the previous GTA games, it got too repetitive and boring after a few hours of the same thing.

MGS4 was my personal GOTY so I'm pleased to see it get the recogntion it deserved. GTA 4 is a great game, but not a solid enough title as a GOTY choice. I could never bring myself to choose a buggy game like Fallout 3 as my GOTY, no matter how engaging it was. LBP was my runner up, my wife and I are still thoroughly enjoying it.

The story was the weak point, and yes, I've played all of the previous games in the series. MGS4 has a good story **for a game**, but if you compare it to even below average movies I think the story is poor at best.

I thought it was strange that on Gamespy, how LBP won best PS3 and beat Fallout 3 which got best on xbox yet Fallout got GOTY overall. Seems like LBP should have won if there was any logic here. Maybe its to appease the large xbox install base? Dunno.
