Resistance Retribution continues to astound
SCEA had Resistance Retribution on display at this year's CES. Bend Studios has managed to tap into the PSP in a way never seen before. Of course, graphics are one thing -- the story of Retribution looks to be quite satisfying, especially for Resistance fans. Bridging the gap between the first and second games on PS3, the story looks nothing short of epic. You'll have to check it out, after the break.

See, that's the thing though - what about those of us that don't have a PS3, and thus aren't Resistance fans?
Between that and the added PS3 content that we miss out on, seems like there's little point in picking up this game, since we likely will have no idea what is going on, nor care about bridging the story between the two games.
I honestly would have preferred another Syphon Filter game. This is essentially the same thing (the graphics in those games were just as good, too), but a PSP franchise, not PS3.
I was happy at first that Sony was bringing over some of the new PS3 IP to the PSP. But it seems to merely supplement the PS3, not stand on its own. (Not to mention being at the expense of Syphon Filter, the PSP's best game series)
Gurbinder @ Jan 8th 2009 11:12PM
Yeah but we have to check out storylines. Think of god of war and crisis core the same way. Most of the people hadn't played god of war for ps2 and still understood the storyline, same with crisis core since some people didn't play ff7. Same thing is probably going to occur here.
Though I agree with you. I would have preferred a sylphon Filter or a different game.
Will someone please tell me what to look forward to other than patapon 2? Im not interested in Dissidia or this or loco roco. I know the year sounds to a good start but is there anything that america is doing other than resistance?
aj @ Jan 8th 2009 11:54PM
Yes, but even sequels and prequels should still have a coherent narrative. And it really does astound me that Crisis Core was so popular despite the fact that it really failed on that count (and I'm saying this as someone who has played Final Fantasy VII).
I was excited about this game, but now....not so much. Way to miss out on my 40$ by assuming I've already spent 500$ on a PS3 and 160$ on two seperate games, Sony.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jan 9th 2009 5:34AM
Well even if you don't understand the story, the gameplay is innovative and could be groundbreaking for the FPS genre on the PSP, the graphics are jaw-dropping gorgeous, and there is going to be infrastructure multiplayer. Even if you haven't played the original or the sequel, I can see PLENTY of reasons to pick this one up.
Jacksons @ Jan 9th 2009 12:29PM
It follows a different character, I doubt you would need to have played Resistance to understand anything. As if there's much of a story to tell in the first place!
Lars @ Jan 9th 2009 1:28PM
"Though I agree with you. I would have preferred a sylphon Filter or a different game."
But Syphon Filter is in the same exact boat, by your argument. Maybe you see it different because you had a PS2. I never liked PlayStation much till the PS3 came out.
Kattleox @ Jan 8th 2009 11:55PM
Wow. What a terrible looking game. I hope it's a PSN download for, like, 10 dollars.
...oh, so this is PSP fanboy? Not PS3 fanboy? In that case, this is gorgeous.
WhiteShield @ Jan 9th 2009 4:18PM
i take videos with a grain of sand. usually the quality is much better on the actual psp. when i saw the crisis core vids before it came out i thought the game looked horrible graphically. and now people say it is one of the most impressive visually games (as is GoW) so i'm gonna pick this up, mainly because i'm psp game deprived and i like the resistance games
TM @ Jan 9th 2009 12:51AM
this looks like a good game to pick up but I hate the fact that you have to have a ps3 to get the infected mode
Eric E @ Jan 9th 2009 1:58PM
yeah i bought r2 instead of renting it b/c of infected stuff.
I wish i just rented it.
R1 is way better. (Co-op, health & weapon system)
Glitches and bugs are numerous in both.
and even though R1 had practically no story (there was narritive) R2's slightly more story was horrible.
If you announce the main character is going to be infected and die soon, and you send him on a suicide mission. Why after beating the final boss do you try to escape and why does everyone risk their lives to save you just so they can shoot you when you get back?
Eric E @ Jan 9th 2009 1:59PM
STOP DONT READ ABOVE MESSAGE!
I PUT SPOILER WARNING IN LAST PARAGRAH BUT WEB SITE MUST HAVE THOUGHT IT WAS HTML CODE
I TALK ABOUT THE ENDING TO RESISTANCE 2!
TM @ Jan 10th 2009 12:09AM
I already know the ending to R2 but for the sake of those who don't yes.
drdre74 @ Jan 9th 2009 9:40AM
This and Patapon 2 are the games i'm looking forward to the most this year on psp. Oh yeah and Kingdom Hearts. I wasnt really feeling Resistance when i played the beta and i didnt like the first one at all. Only reason i want this is because I loved Syphon filter so much.
Lm2007 @ Jan 9th 2009 9:42AM
Uhm, it seems i'm loosing interest in the game because they themself are watering this game to only ps3 owners. I think is a very bad thing to put infected mode and any other extra thing to ps3 owners only. The game looks great but is a shame about the extras.
And kattleox, why you wrote is a terrible looking game?? do you really own a psp or are you a pother handheld] fan? the game's look very smooth.
And no, you can't compare ps3 graphs vs psp.
Jacksons @ Jan 9th 2009 12:27PM
He was joking.
sony boy @ Jan 15th 2009 6:12PM
actually... it's played by a new character. This bridges the gap between resistance 1 and 2... like how god of war:chains of olympus and crisis core did. So it really doesn't matter if you played resistance 1 and 2 or not.
Lm2007 @ Jan 15th 2009 6:45PM
I hope because i've never played resistance before, maybe i get it anyway, i like the sytle.
blackbeard @ Jan 9th 2009 9:56AM
I love the Resistance games. Can't wait for this to come out. I have both a PS3 and a PSP... it's gonna be awesome!
ElCap @ Jan 9th 2009 10:09AM
How much are you missing if you don't have a PS3? I'm looking forward to the game, but I'm not sure I fully understand this infected mode.
PSN: Erdie @ Jan 9th 2009 12:30PM
This is looking even better than I had anticipated. Rock on, Sony Bend.
kappa @ Jan 9th 2009 12:58PM
For those bemoaning the notion that the game is now watered down or catering only to PSP and PS3 owners because of the infected mode, I'd say don't worry. The game itself looks to be just as interesting, lengthy and engaging for people who only own PSP's as for those who own both systems. I don't think Sony Bend would forsake one for the other and given their track record on PSP games, the stand alone version should be damn good.
lorderk @ Jan 9th 2009 1:42PM
I agree 100%.
Nugent @ Jan 9th 2009 2:42PM
I'm not sure why people are complaining about the PS3 additions. Ultimately, it just changes the storyline. It doesn't sound like the levels change, and being infected will really only make the game slightly easier.
I don't know why people complain about the fact that this isn't a brand new IP either. That's like saying Chains of Olympus sucked if you didn't play the earlier GoW games (which I didn't, and CoO did not suck). Heck, Killzone: Liberation was a great game and I had no idea when I played it that it was a sequel, and all that game had was 30 second video and slideshow at the beginning recapping the story. Resistance 2 had a well done intro sequence that lasted about 15 seconds and caught you up on what the Chimera were, who Hale was, etc. As long as they have some kind of recap of what the Chimera are, you'll be set.
Personally, I haven't really enjoyed any FPS games on the PSP. We'll see if Retribution is any better.
antgarcia62 @ Jan 9th 2009 4:16PM
Remember that comment I made on the last Resistance article, about "downloading the game" over the DEMO?...
When I wrote that, I meant via the Playstation Store. Not lying, it's both a UMD and a DL. There's an article about it here. Not a "Resistance" tag, but it's here. LocoRoco will be too I read.
I cant hack, I dont hack, dont want to. I love my PSP the way it is.
Kris @ Jan 9th 2009 4:55PM
I actually enjoy the new focus Bend is putting on a different franchise. This allows them to tell a new story with new gameplay additions that might not fit well with Syphon Filter while also allowing that series to take a back seat for a bit. I would really rather not see Syphon Filter get milked every year =/
What I would enjoy seeing is a ton more PSN games. The PS3 is receiving some fantastic puzzle games that would have been well received on the PSP. Bloxorz...sorry I mean Cuboid for starters.
KelTeck @ Jan 11th 2009 7:51PM
I pre-ordered this from Amazon, does anyone know when the codes for the demo will be sent out?
CaptCalvin @ Jan 22nd 2009 7:32PM
The only thing i worry about now is the length
