Use your Blackberry as a PS3 remote and keypad
Got a Blackberry? If you do, then you could turn that smartphone into a cheap and practical solution to some of PS3s peripheral needs. Unity4Life's Games|Shadow will turn your phone into a remote control for both DVD and Blu-ray playback features, as well as turn it into a keypad for internet browsing or other text-heavy inputs.
The add-on for the phone costs $39.99 and will be available this upcoming April. At that price, it's a rather attractive option as opposed to going for the official wireless keypad which costs $10 more (with no remote control features either). Check out Games|Shadow in action after the break.

40 dollars!?!?!? FAIL!!!
SimbaDogg @ Jan 13th 2009 3:13PM
seriously...$40 bucks, these idiots obviously have never heard of supply and demand functions and elasticity of demand. at $40 bucks they'll probably have like 2 buyers. Jesus for that price you can find a cheap ps3 bd remote, and find a cheap usb keyboard.
William @ Jan 13th 2009 8:52AM
Needs a USB plug? Ugh. And compared to the PS3's bluetooth remote, it's pretty limited.
Still, the keyboard bit is nice.
Hopefully someone will come up with a nice way to do this with Android phones. I'd be willing to pay for that, once I get mine.

Um...the wireless keypad doesn't need a remote control option, since, you know, it's connect to, like, the freaking CONTROLLER.
The BlackBerry device is interesting, but not for $40. I'd rather pay $10 more for something that lets me type without putting down my controller.
However, Unity4Life's all-in-one product, the AV Shadow, it's pretty cool. For $99, though, still too much for my blood. I can live with my existing learning remote.

I think it's pretty slick, since I always have my phone on my anyway.... but it's kind of a fail to need the dongle. PS3 has bluetooth, supports bluetooth keyboards, blackberry has bluetooth and a keyboard... someone please do the math and do this straight up, no dongles. Preferably for free.
flarkle @ Jan 13th 2009 12:39PM
I agree. I hate dongles. Especially if you leave them plugged in and turn the ps3 off, then come back and turn it on and your regular controller automatically gets bumped down to whatever number after the dongles, even if nothing is connected. It's a minor thing to switch the controller to number 1, but still it's annoying.
I really wish Rock Band/GH and Buzz would get on board with the bluetooth already.

ugh, why just blackberry? why not Winmo phones as well?

I like the PS3 but I found it a lot of trouble to go through transcoding all the downloaded videos to watch through PS3. So I finally gave up and bought a used desktop, installed ubuntu intrepid and installed gAnyremote on the desktop and anyRemote on blackberry. I now watch all the downloaded videos on my desktop connected to my 32"lcd tv. Its actually pretty cool as I can browse, play and control all my videos through Blackberry. And its all for free. Now if only PS3 bluetooth wasnt proprietary we could have a free solution as well.
I do watch all my blu rays on PS3 and find ps3 controller as a good enough remote.

Did you ever try TVersity?

If they released something like this for the iPhone I would be all over it.
AJ_3 @ Jan 13th 2009 12:15PM
it would smell of me.
Levi @ Jan 13th 2009 2:47PM
If this was available for the iphone, I'd buy it for no more than $10. $40 is absolutely crazy. For that price, I'd forego Dunkin Donuts twice to get the pS3 specific keypad.
CJLopez @ Jan 13th 2009 3:30PM
i'd rather get a bluetooth keyboard
I have bif fungers and I find myself struggling making SMS on my 8300g quite a lot!!!!
And also, $40??????, ok, so yes, using the BB SDK cost $20, but still, its java based, i'm pretty sure a workaround could be done!!!!!
J2ME its free!!!!!!!

I wish they would something similar for the G1~
