New playable FFXIII character revealed in latest V-Jump
This is a bit of a shocker, and at the same time all kinds of awesome. For one, Tetsuya Nomura breaks out of his comfort zone and makes a pretty cool non-androgynous, non-spiky-haired character for us to look at. Second, this new character has been given a name ... and not just a silly code name; a real FF name. You may call the new playable cast member Sazh Kalzroy.
So far, we know a few things about Sazh. He likes the color green, wields two pistol-like weapons and has a soft spot for Chocobos. Something tells us by that smarmy look on his face that this gent is a ladies man a la Balthier (FFXII). He's a very interesting character indeed; see more of him in the full V-Jump scan here.
[Thanks Copland!]

Whoa. This guy's clothes are both relatively uncomplicated and actually seem to make sense. Plus...Curly hair. And facial hair that isn't in the form of a really tiny "stylish" goatee.
Hat tip to Nomura for stretching himself out of the character design rut he's been stuck in since...I dunno, maybe Parasite Eve.
And it's really hard to tell with that script they're using for the name and the poor resolution/color, but I think the name is more like Sazh Katzroy.
Oshi @ Jan 14th 2009 2:11PM
You are correct sir, it's Katzroy.
The katakana reads "Kattsuroi", despite what the illegible script font below looks like...

Pimp my Chocobo?
GoonieGooGoo @ Jan 14th 2009 12:59PM
FFXIII.......my oh my.......where do I start???
Taking forever and definitely going overbudget to develop....switching heads of the project mid-development......Unoriginal Character Designs.....and now a Pimp???
Wow.......I'm glad I have so many other games to play...it would suck if this was the ONLY game I had been waiting for because the more i learn about the FFXIII series....the less excited I get.

I like how the roy in his name somehow blackifies it even more.
He meets all the requirements for being black:
Horndog, smooth operator. Check.
Afro or otherwise clearly black hair, hat or doo-rag. Check.
Love of yard bird. Heck, I must Check.
What remains to be seen is if he's a stylish, hold the gune sideways, side shooting guy. Ala the east side. And/or a refined taste in clothes only drinks Hennessy/Courvoisier type of brother. In that case the brothering would be complete.

aaand racist.
Scoopy @ Jan 14th 2009 2:40PM
Black people, stop overreacting. Its not that serious. Even if he turns out sterotipish, So what. I'm sure its not gonna be that bad if not bad at all. We gotta learn to let stuff go and stop so sensitive about everything.
he looks goofy so I hope hes like the joking type or would just go off like Barrett use to in FFXII

Cool, I can play as Donnovan McNabb.
ElLobo @ Jan 14th 2009 2:56PM
That's funny. It says in Japanese right next to him?, "こんもりアフロは子チョコボの巣?” which means, "An afro this size...can it be a baby chocobo's nest?"
That's funny because I had an afro in Japan and my friend used to always call it a bird's nest. Must be a common Japanese thought.
Rock @ Jan 14th 2009 3:21PM
Wow.... That comedian from the late 80's; Sinbad is making his comeback on Final Fantasy 13!
Dylan Bruns @ Jan 14th 2009 3:56PM
Wow, he looks like a real person. Well dressed black guy with a pair of guns and a pet bird. Where is this racist? Now sure, he might end up being a bad character, but we don't know yet, don't jump to conclusions.
wumster @ Jan 14th 2009 5:41PM
You young white kids hide behind your keyboards and post dumb comments when this is just a game. I am white so i know how stupid you turds can be. The guy looks awesome and my interest in this game has went from 6 to 9. Glad to see this.
NotoriousJnX @ Jan 14th 2009 5:32PM
Is it April 1st already? And do the Japanese recognize it?
TJF588 @ Jan 14th 2009 10:03PM
He looks so... groomed, unlike Seifer the Cerulean over thar. LOL at the chocobo nest afro! Indeed, seeing such poofy hair is a VERY nice change of pace, and really, a black guy's prolly the only kind that Nomura could've driven himself to put some on. The touch of green is nice, too, though looking at the color, I wonder if any faux-Matrix associations might be made.
And, of course, LOL at the sideways-pistoling and chocobo-eatin'. Damn, I love funny stereotypes (see also: Forumwarz; damn nice game).
@Scoopy: FFVII =/= FFXII (though wasn't it that Lightning was designed as a female Cloud (along with Paine as a female Squall)?)
Chane_san @ Jan 15th 2009 12:38AM
I'm black and I like the color green and I like Chocobos and I'm happy that there is a new black character, but this guy looks kind of goofy. He looks like he should be in the Wizard of Oz, living in Emerald City. But when I get this game if I do since I don't have a PS3, he will probably be my favorite character especially since he uses 2 guns. I just kind of hope someone cuts his hair off.
Ferdasyn @ Jan 15th 2009 4:05AM
Looks interesting.
Twan @ Jan 15th 2009 11:39AM
Why are they ALWAYS stereotyping black people in video games?
Like the ideal look of a black man would be an Afro, and all that other nonsense. This isn't the 70s.
Ugh its so annoying.
Radical Edward @ Jan 15th 2009 7:43PM
This is the most interesting FF character to come about since.... um.... ever.
I was gonna say since Rikku, but she was sadly never as quarky as I wanted her to be ='(
Snow @ Jan 21st 2009 6:16PM
That smirk. It's like he just walked in on me naked and he wants what he sees.
