Rumor: Persona coming to PSP
The Persona franchise has never been hotter. The incredible success of Persona 3 and 4 on PlayStation 2 has propelled the series into the limelight. Atlus may be revisiting some of the earlier Persona games, according to a report by Play Online. They claim that Hong Kong magazine GameWave notes a Persona release for PSP on its cover (pictured).
The PSP game is supposedly based on the original Persona, which released on PlayStation 1, released in 1996. Whether or not this will be a full remake or an enhanced port is unclear. However, until Atlus officially announces the game, we're going to classify this as a rumor.

OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
that's awesome!
(although I would have liked a Persona game just for the PSP, but it's still a pretty cool thing to have going on)

i'm curious.
never played a persona, but think i might get persona 3 and 4 for ps2. I'm sure this will get good scores.
i also have a question. Do you need to play the other persona's on ps1 to know the story or is it like the Final Fantasy series where each one is a diffrent story?

No you don't each holds as it's own story. However, P4 has a cameo (spell check) from P3. P3 also makes reference to a family from Persona. The only real sequals in a Persona game are the two Persona2 games Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. I remember Eternal Punishment had a lot of returning and further character stories about the Persona1 cast.

Some of the characters from Persona 1 show up in Persona 2, as playable guest party members, adversaries, and NPCs to talk to for information (moreso in P2 Eternal Punishment than Innocent Sin). However, the plotlines of the games are separate so it's not necessary to play any previous games to understand what's going on. Similarly, the two Persona 2 games are taken from different perspectives so it's not necessary to play them both. In fact, only playing EP will let you have a much fresher perspective on certain things.

I dunno if we'll see this in NA though, even if it's true. Most games we get these days, RPGs at least, are ports, so translations can be re-used to save on costs. Since they wouldn't be the case here...
The original translation done by Atlus was truly awful, up there in Aegis Wing territory. They also "tweaked" the NA version by making one of the characters into a tacky racial stereotype who would spout horrible catchphrases.

Hell ******* yeah!
erico316 @ Jan 15th 2009 6:39PM
this is a game i want now! wow the psp is surely changing it tone.

Perhaps Atlus will put Persona 1 & 2 on the PS One Classics section of the PlayStation Store.

I' rather see 2 EP and IS ported. I really don't like the first one. If Atlus does this though be prepared for a very different persona than the one found on the ps2. Here's hoping for an enhanced remake.

I wonder, would more people want to see the original localized version of Persona ported to PSP, or a different version with different localization aspects?
andrew @ Jan 15th 2009 7:32PM
Confirmed: http://www.n4g.com/News-260773.aspx
ZagZagovich @ Jan 15th 2009 10:44PM
First one is rather bad. It has this god awful old styled dungeon crawler exploration first person crap with infinite corridors. The plot is a bit hard to follow too. All of the other ones are great.
MDS @ Jan 15th 2009 9:32PM
Oh please god enhance, retrans, and port this. I've bought every localized SMT game I can find, except for the original PS Persona because it was so freaking badly done.
Please. People bought FES, they will buy a spruced up Persona 1. Pleaaaaaase.
Elven_Star @ Jan 16th 2009 12:14AM
Nice, I'm just gonna pick up P3 & P4. Having one in my pocket would be awesome :D
matt @ Jan 16th 2009 2:22AM
well hopefully they will release it unedited, unlike the original ps release which was missing content cause they thought it'd be too difficult for americans.
cafecito @ Jan 16th 2009 2:25AM
Please, Atlus... don't make it just PSOne ports/downloads. Make an original PSP Persona or at least, a complete remake :)
Use P3 and P4 as your templates!

What happened to Devil Summoner on PSP that Japan got in like 2005?
Bring that over here.
Rhyndo @ Jan 16th 2009 11:31AM
From what I gathered there were a lot of glitches with the game due to the emulation used for it (since it was a port from the Saturn version of the game.) In a way it's likely better Atlus didn't being it over.

Good number of JRPG for PSP announced or already released....
persona, hack//link, final fantasy dissidia, disgaea2 portable, kingdom hearts bbs, final fantasy XIII agito, tales of the world 2, star ocean 2, phantasy star portable, parasite eve 3, etc...the list goes on. Now if all of them are localized....it'll be heaven.
Kabapu @ Jan 16th 2009 2:41PM
I posted this on their forums complaining when they rereleased Persona II in a super-limited (read: available for only 1 hour on Amazon) reprint of the game for the Playstation 1.
Hopefully they're listening to fans and will release the games on the PSN.
