Special edition FFVII PS3 revealed, FFXIII demo dated
So there are more PS3 units with special markings coming out. The release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete on April 16 will usher in this new 160GB bundle in Japan. The new unit will be bundled with the reworked and extended film from Square Enix, which will also include a demo for Final Fantasy XIII.
Alongside the hardware bundle, Advent Children Complete will see release in two other packages: the movie with the FFXIII demo, and the movie without it. The film will include English voiceovers, so those looking to import won't miss a beat. There's still no word of a release date outside Japan and whether the bonus demo would appear in worldwide releases of the film.
Here's a breakdown of the three packages and their prices:

Reading this so early in the morning, I sadly read Special edition FFVII and assumed remake until I rubbed my eyes, took another look and was dissapointed.
lvphilly1017 @ Jan 19th 2009 7:25AM
LOLOLOLOL! i completely argeed with u! i thought it was a remake FF VII but not...should i say bummer?
theMediaman @ Jan 19th 2009 7:26AM
Same here. Damn, I've been crossing my fingers for a re-release of FFVII since I bought a PSP so many years ago.
ComicShaman @ Jan 19th 2009 10:44AM
I can't understand Square's reluctance to go forward on a FFVII remake. How many companies would kill for guaranteed sales of that magnitude? Baffling.
Dan Rabot @ Jan 19th 2009 6:31AM
I don't know about everyone else but i personally wouldn't want my PS3 emblazoned with logos from a specific game?!
Perhaps it's a particularly Japanese thing, hence these only coming out over there.
I mean it looks cool and all but it's far more than a Final Fantasy machine.
What are everyone else's opinion on these?
Catdogburger @ Jan 19th 2009 6:45AM
Final Fantasy is a system seller, why not have it personalized?
Levi @ Jan 19th 2009 10:19AM
depends on if the game in question is one of your favorite games of all time, like FFVII is to me. Though I would have rather seen the title/logo combo, than this "Cloud Wolf" thing I haven't even seen before.
slycooper_rocker [psn:slycooper_rocker] @ Jan 19th 2009 11:55AM
it's like a broach on the clothes he wears in advent children.
Catdogburger @ Jan 19th 2009 6:43AM
wow....People complain about the GT Prologue demo costing 40$ (I bought and enjoy it). I wonder if they will complain about having to buy a movie (Advent Children) to get this demo? Since there is 2 different movies (one with the demo and one without), the difference between them in money is 11$.
I did however hear something that the demo was quite large though, so who knows how this will go.
I think it's a marketing gimmick for Sony to try and get some money back (I am still importing it though), anybody agree with me?
Coops @ Jan 19th 2009 6:45AM
Wow, looks like I'm gonna be paying about £45+ to play a demo then :S Anyone know the best place to get it from? Playasia maybe? Need somewhere that'll definately ship to the UK and preferably not cost a fortune. Hmm, eBay might be a good idea actually =]
@Dan Rabot: I can't even see the side of my PS3 where I keep it so doesn't really bother me, but I do think they look pretty cool like this - it adds character. I like the MGS4 one more though, shame it wasn't release in the UK.
Dan Rabot @ Jan 19th 2009 6:53AM
I'm exactly the same, she stands behind my TV so i wouldn't see it anyway.
Also, thinking about it had I not already got a PS3 when the MGS4 one came out (if it had come out over here) i would have probably picked it up. That is a PS3 exclusive though, wouldn't want a multiplat game custom PS3.
@ above (forgot your name) - I think it's fair play to do these, they obviously have some appeal to some people but I'm wondering if it's a global appeal and if so why don't they release them elsewhere? - Obviously there are people who would like one of these but are there enough to justify releasing them over here.
I think the whole themed PS3 thing must me a Japanese thing.
Archon @ Jan 19th 2009 6:52AM
A HUGE question. Will the movie be Region Free? Play-Asia says it is region 'A'... I live in the UK, which is region 'B'...
Dan Rabot @ Jan 19th 2009 6:54AM
If it's on Blu-ray it'll be fine, if it's on DVD it probably won't work.
Archon @ Jan 19th 2009 6:57AM
This is a general misconception. Blu-Ray movies are region coded just like DVDs are. Region A movies won't play on Region B players. Yes, there are some region free discs, though. That's why I'm asking.
This whole thing does not apply to Blu-Ray games.
erico316 @ Jan 19th 2009 7:27AM
they reworked the region system on blu ray region a is now include japan and the usa region b is Europe and aus
Hyams @ Jan 19th 2009 8:11AM
No, the movie won't play. The demo might, though, but there's no guarantee that it will.
If I were you, I'd hold onto your money, and check around on forums (neogaf would probably be the best) until you're sure that it'd work.
Orion @ Jan 19th 2009 10:01AM
Speaking as a guy who has a white ps3 from japan, US blu rays play just fine as do games (heck I just watched Night at the Museam last night..) I see no reason why this wouldn't work.. why do you think people import JPN ps3s all the time? :)
Archon @ Jan 19th 2009 10:15AM
Orion, as previously stated, both the USA and Japan are in the same Blu-Ray region. UK is not, therefore the movie will not play. This only applies to Movies, as all games are region free.
That's the third time I'm explaining that today. Duh.
There: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Blu-ray_regions_without_key.svg
Let's take a look at this image.
Japan is the group of islands in the east (that's where your right hand is). It is marked with the color orange. The big orange thing in the west (use your left hand as reference to that direction) is called 'Americas'. That's plural, because it is divided into two seperate entities, both called 'America'. The middle of the upper part of it is called USA (that's where your house is! You can also call it 'The United States of America' if you so desire). They are both colored orange. This means they belong to the same region. Which is region A. You can check if your movies contain the letter "A" on the cover. All your games should do! How do you know it is an "A" you are looking at? It looks like an open stepladder with a spreader in the middle! Hope you understand now, Orion, kthxbai :*. Next time, read the comment you are responding to.
Orion @ Jan 19th 2009 10:29AM
Wow for a brit you sure are a douche. Chill out, I was responding to the other US players about their compatibility, not yours. I'm very much aware that EU movies and Asian movies don't work on japan and US systems.
Dear lord...
Archon @ Jan 19th 2009 10:33AM
Duh. A boy can't have fun in his own comment bit anymore. Fine, be that way.

Jonathan @ Jan 19th 2009 6:56AM
Why does Sony keep releasing so many freakin SKU's? I'm pretty sure this is why they're having such a tough time cutting prices down. Their product manager is a complete idiot.
And why are you guys buying a movie just to play a demo? It's a freakin demo.
DeanXeL @ Jan 19th 2009 7:25AM
for one, this is not a "new" SKU, but a special edition in limited numbers, for fans. it will probably not even get released outside of Japan.
And secondly, the ones that are buying the movie with the demo, are not just buying it for the demo, the movie is an extended edition of FF:AC in highdef, the demo is just an extra.
lastly, making a special edition, that will be completely sold out in which I guess will be record time (crazy japanese) is NOT a dumb marketing decision, but is rather smart, you know, making money is usually a good thing.
dxr @ Jan 19th 2009 7:25AM
Um, well, you do get the movie as well?
Jonathan @ Jan 19th 2009 7:38AM
A limited SKU is still a new SKU. And for the people who are not very knowledgeable on how a business works: selling out of something that costs you money to make is not a good thing. However, if they are finally gaining profits on selling PS3s, will the profits from this limited release make up for the operation costs of creating these new consoles? If they focused solely on 3 or so SKUs, they would have seen far larger economies of scale by now. Since I'm not a Sony insider though, I can't speak 100% on their factory, but unless all they have to do is switch out a low cost part to create these and their other SKUs, they're hurting themselves.
And I obviously wasn't talking to people who are buying the movie to get the demo as a bonus. I'm talking about people who are going to buy a movie they have no interest in to get the demo (ie: Coops).
Orion @ Jan 19th 2009 10:09AM
It's a metal gear solid system with a small paint job, jonathan. How does that really take money to make?
And selling out of consoles IS a good thing. Because, uh.. you know... the point is to sell GAMES on them. In your logic, it's bad to sell systems because you lose money on them at first, so they shouldn't sell systems at all!
If you were really savvy on your business sense like you say you are (and you're not), you'd know that if you sell a special edition PS3 to a costumer who would not have bought a PS3 before because they were iffy.. but did because they saw a FFVII version which excited them.... and that prompted them to buy a bunch of blu rays and all the JRPGs for the system, then they make money!
It's marketing magic. Make something people want which will be the carrier for you making money in the future.
I mean heck, I was iffy on getting a PS3 until I saw the white beauty I purchased for sale on an import site. 2 weeks later I have 18 games and my first Blu Ray.. a format I swore 2 years ago to never support.
Funny how a "useless" new SKU can make money, huh?
Araskaz @ Jan 19th 2009 2:41PM
Jonathan.. This isn't another SKU... it's a 160gb with a logo on it. All they did is put a logo on it...
By the way, Sony is making money on the games they publish. They lose money on the systems (40 bucks now) and they make it up with the games people buy. If one person has 2 games published by Sony, it makes up for 3 people who have bought a PS3. I for one have Lair, Heavenly Sword, LBP, Uncharted, Resistance, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2 (not counting number 1, it was bundled), Warhawk, SOCOM, and a BUNCH of DL games. Thats 8 games published by Sony - which would be me covering 12 people who bought a PS3....
Lets not forget Sony making 1 million IN ONE WEEK with home. Home has been out for awhile, so I'm pretty sure it's been racking in some money.
This bundle (see I said bundle not SKU) will get Sony some more buyers in Japan... we all know it. They are FF freaks over there... so of course it would.
Jonathan @ Jan 19th 2009 6:20PM
I love arguing with people who have no idea what they are talking about. Do you people even know what an SKU is? Look it up.
But I guess my NYU-Stern business degree is no match for what you guys think is true. This guy can't even spell customer and then he says I have no business sense, wow.
Leo McKelvin @ Jan 19th 2009 6:44PM
Jonathan -
For someone with a "business degree" you sure did just get put in your place. Your only comeback to that was personal insults and picking out a spelling mistake.
You are the epitome of the word arrogant. When you learn some humility you might be able to make your point without coming off as a condesending prick.
My point is not relevant because I didn't properly spell the word next to "prick".
Jonathan @ Jan 19th 2009 6:50PM
Ummm, that's because I didn't want to write a long ass post to describe in detail why you guys are wrong. How am I supposed to argue with someone about SKUs when they don't even know what an SKU is? I decided to end the debate where it was at because I realized I was arguing about operational management with people who can't even spell customer correctly. There are much better ways for me to completely waste my time.

Wow, Square got their noses out of microsofts ass long enough to give sony some support!
TheLonelyStoner @ Jan 19th 2009 7:41AM
lol at all the people saying "it costs to play demo?" "marketing tactic by sony" then go on to say their going to buy it anyway. Sony know who to target with their marketing
acefondu @ Jan 19th 2009 8:11AM
I misread the title and got excited about a remake of FFVII... damn...
Jody Anthony (gamertag and psn: JodyAnthony) @ Jan 19th 2009 8:27AM
i dont care about the demo, I just want the movie in HD.
ScottishPrik @ Jan 19th 2009 8:29AM
lol £50 for one demo. 360 has every demo for 40. Hhm which is the better offer.....?
OLDMIKE @ Jan 19th 2009 8:48AM
360 will never see this demo and the demo is $11 the rest is the cost of the movie
Neo Senku @ Jan 19th 2009 9:26AM
Wow, dumbass much?
ScottishPrik @ Jan 19th 2009 9:50AM
Lol, you guys are easy. All demos on 360 are there for £40 but you have to make special pre-orders and subscriptions to qore for every demo that's even worth getting. Which amounts to a lot more than £40.
They'll do this for any demo that people are even remotely excited about (i.e FFXIII versus, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain)that is if these games get demos at all.
I say boycott these bulls**t marketing ploys. I have. The only dumbasses here are you guys.

um... no? They're willing to pay money for a demo, big whoop. Yay, you're boycotting some demos, good for you. Try to change the world to democracy while you're at it, maybe you'll succeed!
Qore costs money to produce. They have to pay cameramen, producers, sound guys, video editing crew, and Veronica Belmont. Of course you're gonig to have to pay for it, you whiny son of a bitch. $3 is a lot less than the $8 they're asking for a magazine on the shelves.
I agree that $11 is a bit much for an extra disc with a demo, but it's not like the game will cost $11 extra when it comes out, so no big deal. It's there for people who are willing to pay the extra.
This generation of kids that expect everything for free makes me sick. Once you get a job, I'll expect you to do it for free.
JakeDunn @ Jan 19th 2009 8:37AM
so is this regular black or colored?
as for blu-ray, yes there are regions but most movies are region free anyway
Shinogu @ Jan 19th 2009 9:14AM
What I want to know is where the point about English Subtitles on this Blu-ray disc came from. Ironically, I pulled the source of this news item through a rough transliteration site and nothing resembled a line that talked about subtitles. Help me out here, people.
silverwolf761 @ Jan 19th 2009 9:16AM
