Firmware 2.60 brings photo gallery, DivX 3.11
Sony is giving PlayStation 3 owners a surprise gift today. Firmware 2.60 will be dropping imminently and will bring with it several new features. The photo gallery is a new installable feature which gives you a large variety of ways of sorting and displaying your photos. You can see more of that in the video above.
DivX 3.11 is also now supported by PS3s, as well as guest access to the PlayStation Store. This means that whether you've signed up or not you can now browse the PlayStation Store and see all the cool stuff you're missing out on. No doubt there'll be some further, secret features included in 2.60. If you find anything else be sure to let us know. We'll update as soon as the new firmware goes live.
[UPDATE] Firmware 2.60 is now live. Retrieve it via the "System Update" XMB menu option.

Oh nice. Nice to know they're still working on making stuff more accessible. Now maybe i can convince my siblings to by some casual games.
Magma @ Jan 20th 2009 12:22PM
Pimp!
Pumapayam @ Jan 20th 2009 12:26PM
Nice way to add more value to the OS. Bravo Sony.
Erik Stroud @ Jan 20th 2009 1:23PM
I agree, the PS3 is one of the best home media players in my opinion. Now all we need is support for MKVs.
Deaddy @ Jan 20th 2009 1:52PM
$0.99 for one costume is pushing it, $1.99 for one costume is far far too much. But I have to admit this pack seems like a good value at $2.99.
Deaddy @ Jan 20th 2009 1:53PM
Sorry my password program screwed up, I meant to say you can run MKVs through MKV2VOB and they play perfectly with no quality loss on the PS3
Kattleox @ Jan 20th 2009 2:00PM
What? $2.99? I thought firmware was free...unless you have inside sources or something.
NineT9mustang @ Jan 20th 2009 2:05PM
The PS3 will support MKV as soon as they support Divx7.0
Eventually they will, they have to...if they plan on supporting Divx, so lets all wait until that day comes
Deaddy @ Jan 20th 2009 2:39PM
Sorry, my browser screwed up. I was saying that you can use MKV2VOB and get your MKV files to play on PS3 with no quality loss.
NineT9 @ Jan 20th 2009 6:11PM
Deaddy, ya thats what I do now...
but its a real pain to do, especially when your converting 2tb+ of MKV, some videos take 6 hours to convert if you have to Video Transcode it :/
Id much rather keep my collection in its orginal form
Its like MP3's or DIVX, Thatd be a real pain to have to convert every format so itll play
Thats just me, I'm about conveniance, hence why I have a PS3, just this little feature would be great :D
kN3eLb4Z0d @ Jan 20th 2009 7:04PM
Alls I gotta say is.. get this:
http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/
You will be able to play everything that isn't DRMd in its original format with zero problems.
You can even read CBR files. Greatest thing ever.
David @ Jan 20th 2009 8:48PM
Indeed it is the greatest thing ever. I downloaded the ps3mediaserver yesterday and it's awesome. I just installed it and opened it and that was it. Already my ps3 was seeing all my files and playing mkvs with subs without a hitch. The only tweaking it needs is to cap the Mbps if you are using wi-fi but that's only a minor thing in such a great program. Every PS3 owner should download it. It supports Windows, OSX and Linux. Never thought I'd say it but it is way better than Tversity.

Holy bleep kN3eLb4Z0d!
I used to use Winamp Remote but this PS3 Media Server (suggestive/original name...) ownz!1!one!eleven1
You just install it and.. voilá!, it works.
It's so great the xbots are even asking for it on the site's forums :P
Jay [psn: jayrockslife] @ Jan 20th 2009 12:26PM
Nice.
I'm glad we can use our PSN for leaving comment there now.
vandil @ Jan 20th 2009 12:29PM
Now all they need to do is add support for XviD, since no one uses DivX anymore.
Mo @ Jan 20th 2009 12:35PM
hah! exactly
PBone @ Jan 20th 2009 12:39PM
whats the difference between XviD and DivX??
ZildjianKX @ Jan 20th 2009 5:35PM
PS3 already supports XviD, it's all I play on my PS3...
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 20th 2009 12:43PM
people still use Divx.......
I'd much rather have .mkv support tho.....
elementxstyle @ Jan 20th 2009 12:59PM
I don't know if you're aware but DivX and XviD are built and use the same decoding method. Mostly all XviD builds encoded with a build of XviD newer than 2005 will undoubtedly play on you're PS3. In fact, H264 is also playable on the PS3. I play a lot of videos with XviD, DivX, and H264 encoding on my PS3.
Xeones25 @ Jan 20th 2009 1:02PM
I second the .mkv support.
The only time I used divx is when the divx company had the stage6.divx video hosting site. I was basically a better version of youtube (video was higher resolution and you could download as well as stream). I haven't watched any divx files since that site was taken down.
Game_playa @ Jan 20th 2009 1:39PM
XviD plays fine on my PS3, I guess you haven't updated to the latest firmware
Popfrogs @ Jan 20th 2009 3:45PM
LOL you fail. DivX and Xvid support have both been included for months now. I do all my DVD rip recodes in Xvid and they all play natively.
Maybe this will convince you to finally buy a PS3.
Hife @ Jan 20th 2009 12:30PM
Nice, I had been thinking we were about due for an update.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 20th 2009 12:31PM
nice....although I dont think I will be using this I'm sure someone will....
I wonder what 2.7 will bring......
Jtenma @ Jan 20th 2009 12:39PM
@itbekevin16
Inappropriate and uncalled for...
Jerses @ Jan 20th 2009 1:13PM
Im not into this too. I hope 2.70 brings a music app where you can nave all youre album cover...more like the iphone... plus they can add like sixaxis support to change the tunes :P
itbekevin16
you should be banned for life.
DZ @ Jan 20th 2009 2:28PM
@itbekevin
You are a complete tool and the most useless implementation of carbon that I have ever seen.
CleanNJerk101 @ Jan 20th 2009 12:36PM
Lol it uses TEH POWA!! he said lol
Gorman @ Jan 20th 2009 9:48PM
Another update and still gimped chat functions over PSN. Thanks Sony.
Hobo Stu @ Jan 20th 2009 4:07PM
Anyone notice if there they added shuffle for the slideshow?
Killian @ Jan 20th 2009 12:43PM
Can't wait for firmware 2.62 to fix all of the issues this one brings...
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 20th 2009 12:45PM
hell lets HOPE this one doesnt bring that many issues.....
and if it does it would be fixed in 2.61
Kombat @ Jan 20th 2009 1:02PM
Wow... all of you can thank OBAMA for this ... see hes already giving the ppl what they want...Suprise FW Updates FTW!
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 20th 2009 1:16PM
ummmmmmmm yea.......
So this update was most likely made in Japan.....lol
I wish we could give him credit for this tho.....
Paranoid @ Jan 20th 2009 1:03PM
umh.....
NETFLIX!
Do we really care more about Photos on our TVs or would we prefer Netflix?
just saying...
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 20th 2009 1:13PM
2.70 maybe??? lol
Kodros @ Jan 20th 2009 1:23PM
Just buy PlayOn for $30 if you want Netflix on your PS3.
Paranoid @ Jan 20th 2009 1:27PM
@ KODROS
yeah I looked into it, but I have a MAC
and I dont want to run an emulator, for an emulator, etc... you get the idea.
It should just be something that Sony provides.
ZeroCorpse @ Jan 20th 2009 1:32PM
Why the hell would you want to tie up your PS3 for Netflix? You can pick up a Roku for $99 and it will use less electricity, run quieter, and leave your PS3 available for gaming or other functions.
And streaming from your computer to your PS3 is just dumb. Now you're using up a crapload of electricity for the PC, and a bunch for the PS3, and tying up both devices to perform one function!
Just get a Roku Netflix Player. It's cheap. It has a great remote. It gets nice firmware updates. It will soon do Amazon VOD. It uses barely any electricity, even when streaming.
The PS3 and Roku even look decent sitting next to each other in your entertainment center!
I like my PS3, and I really like my Roku. Between those and other Internet offerings, I don't even need to subscribe to cable.
FB @ Jan 20th 2009 2:33PM
I completely agree with paranoid about Netflix on PS3.
If there would ever be a reason for me to get an X***360 (and believe me the idea itself makes me sick but still i have been considering the thought), it would be for the Netflix deal. It is a much better deal in the end than spending 4 bucks per rental from the PS video store. Even the added membership for xbox live would pay itself back eventually. I see myself renting more movies lately on PSN and if i look at the money i've spent by now Live + Netflix would have been so much cheaper for me already. Plus you can rent as much as you like too.
I have a Mac too and there's no option at this point for me to use Netflix on my PS3. I don't want to use a PC or emulator either.
wem003 @ Jan 20th 2009 2:50PM
If you don't want an xbox, just get the Roku netflix player. It's awesome and has HD streaming now.
Moose @ Jan 20th 2009 6:59PM
+1 vote for Netflix... Just adding my voice to the growing chorus. I bet if they shared revenue with Netflix in a deal they would 1) sell more consoles, 2) make more money on rentals than they currently do in the Playstation Store. Time to cut that gangrenous limb off!
ill trooper @ Jan 21st 2009 12:33AM
I would love to see Netflix, but I heard the rumor is that the PS3 would be getting Blockbuster's online rental service to compete. Hmmm. Can't really say that's as clever as Netflix because I'm already a member of Netflix. Again, it's just a rumor I heard.
JaffaBoy @ Jan 21st 2009 6:14AM
Would love to be *able* to use Netflix but many of us arn't in the USA
Bahamut44-4 @ Jan 20th 2009 1:04PM
At the risk of sounding ungreatful, where is the cross game chat support? Even cross game invites? It's crippling without it. All these little photo galleries are all well and good, but shouldn't they be concentrating on making the PS3 an even better GAMING system?
Plus I just bought your shiny headset Sony... ;D
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 20th 2009 1:15PM
I dont too much care for it.......but IF its in the works, some that major would come with say 3.0 as that is a BIG step.......
we can only hope 3.0 includes PS2 Backward compatibility, Netflix, and Cross-game Chat......even tho I wouldnt use Cross-game chat, It would at LEAST shut up the fanboys......
ryuk @ Jan 20th 2009 1:24PM
omg, PS2 backwards compatability would be the best update ever, considering i only have a 40gig
DZ @ Jan 20th 2009 2:34PM
@ Aggie_CEO
Cross-game chat, It would at LEAST shut up the fanboys......
Couldn't have said it better myself. Well... except to add in the 360 fanboy camp...
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 20th 2009 4:02PM
lol.......true.....one less thing that they will have to say XBL is better than PSN
