I suppose Escape from New York's Snake Pliskin was no inspiration to MGS huh? yeah right...
Chillski @ Jan 20th 2009 8:18AM
Hideo has admitted a bunch of times that escape from ny was his inspiration for snake... doesnt mean thats one of his fav movies
kre8ivnigma @ Jan 20th 2009 8:30AM
As a female gamer... Mr. Kojima doesn't have to change a thing to his list or his games. If you're a real gamer you should be down for what the man creates no matter what his movies list.
PS: That is a kick ass list!
Vivitas @ Jan 20th 2009 11:04AM
^ - Marry me! :O
That is, in fact, an awesome list of movies. I can see that it's true because MGS feels like a lot of those movies.
zuperhans @ Jan 20th 2009 8:13AM
boats and hoes!

How can you not have Star Wars in there. -1 respect point for you good sir!
Kattleox @ Jan 20th 2009 8:52AM
Or Space Balls, for that matter.
ryuk @ Jan 20th 2009 9:50AM
i'm a pretty big movie critic and i don't like star wars
Nathan @ Jan 20th 2009 8:25AM
Good list!
SparkyJ23 @ Jan 20th 2009 9:00AM
+1 respect points for having Children of Men in there.
The most Kickass last 20 mins in film
Laurens Holst @ Jan 20th 2009 9:09AM
How can Blade Runner and Invasion of the Body Snatchers not be on there, given the existence of his (awesome) game (SD-) Snatcher? Blade Runner, by the way, being absolutely awesome in its own right.
ittybittygirl @ Jan 20th 2009 9:16AM
OMGWTF, he didn't list some of my favorites, we are no longer kindred spirits. Boycott his games!!!
Good form Monsieur Kojima-san, Children of Men and 2001 ftw.
rob @ Jan 20th 2009 9:26AM
Who cares?
Nineteen88 @ Jan 20th 2009 9:32AM
I never liked the James Bond series of films, but Casino Royale is an exception, it's one of my personal favourites, along with Heat.
Obviously Kojima prefers the Action genre.
Nineteen88 @ Jan 20th 2009 9:37AM
edit: Anyone agrees that Kojima looks like a well dressed mannequin in this pic?
Imran @ Jan 20th 2009 9:53AM
I'm surprised there aren't any thought provoking movies with all the weighty ideas Kojima throws in the games. Also, Black Hawk Down?!? That is racist/orientalist imperial propaganda. Even the author Mark Bowden (I think) of the book admitted that his story was one-sided. A no depth no brainer. -100 for that one Hideo!
Kodros @ Jan 20th 2009 12:13PM
"Also, Black Hawk Down?!? That is racist/orientalist imperial propaganda."
Oh piss off. It was a very good movie.
Imran @ Jan 20th 2009 4:03PM
Very well informed rebuttal. Yet another lemming rears his head, i mean arse, and spews opinion as legitimate.
Liberate your mind:

That is, if you want it liberated... Oh yeah, and you probably think "300" is not orientalist. (You probably do not even know what I am talking when I bring up orientalism. No surprise.)
Wootzor @ Jan 20th 2009 10:03AM
These are probably the most commercial of the movies he likes. Some of theme are just pure testosterone films rather than films that are as substantial and deep as his games. With the exclusion of 2001 and Full Metal Jacket the others on the list are really just action flicks.
Though as an American citizen I'm certainly both confused/flattered by his interest in Kubrick films and The Great Escape.
But no Sergio Leone films? Revolver Ocelot is spaghetti western galore.
aj @ Jan 20th 2009 10:03AM
Why only American (and a couple English) films?
Wootzor @ Jan 20th 2009 10:14AM
Japanese films are good (Takashi Miike, Akira Kurosawa), but just look at how his games are told. They aren't sourced out of strange art films, that's more of the stuff Suda51 does (Killer7, No More Heroes).
Even MGS2's storyline was more inspired by books than movies, (The New York Trilogy, Kangaroo Notebook)
If they weren't written so well they would all play out like good Hollywood films.
snake79 @ Jan 20th 2009 10:25AM
the only favorite movie i have in common with kojima is black hawk down.
Wootzor @ Jan 20th 2009 1:19PM
I bet you're also one the people who said MGS2 sucked.
snake79 @ Jan 21st 2009 10:38AM
not really. I'm one of those that says all MGS is great!
But my fav is MGS3.
Brucie_K @ Jan 20th 2009 10:32AM
Predator, Full Metal Jacket, Die Hard and Dawn Of The Dead? Hideo has a very good taste in movies.
Danzaiver @ Jan 20th 2009 11:01AM
Full Metal Jacket is one of my favorites,
2001 too, also James Bond movies. Kojima has a good taste :D
Lard @ Jan 20th 2009 11:15AM
How can X movie not be on there?
If his taste is not exactly the same as mine, it's wrong!
Bakerboi @ Jan 20th 2009 11:22AM
He didnt pick Escape from Newyork or Escape from L.A.?
That liar...lol Konami prolly told him not to.
Aysir @ Jan 20th 2009 12:09PM
@chillski,
The list is of the movies that influenced MGS and Kojima according to the site; not necessarily his fave 15 films. So Escape from New York should certainly be there.
Damian @ Jan 20th 2009 12:20PM
Guns of Navarone , + rep Hideo . Love that film .
bugatti23007 @ Jan 20th 2009 12:52PM
What about Scarface,The Matrix,Back to the Future,Saving Private Ryan, & The Fast and The Furious?
Deadpool @ Jan 21st 2009 12:38AM
Ah yes, the timeless classic "The Fast and the Furious". The only movie that truly challenges CITIZEN KANE, CASABLANCA, GONE WITH THE WIND and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Who could ever forget the amazing coversations between each character. Like the unforgettable conversation about the tuna fish.
Vince: Why don't you try Fat Burger from now on? You can get yourself a cheese and fries for 2.95, faggot!
Brian: I like the tuna here.
Vince: Bullshit, asshole, no one likes the tuna here!
Brian: Yeah, well I do.
Ahh...how riveting. [proceeds to sip his tea]
Game_playa @ Jan 20th 2009 1:04PM
He should have The Dark Night on his list too, since both of them are about how far humans can go
maidsandharem @ Jan 20th 2009 9:28PM
"This is rather manly list of films and sounds exactly like our Blu-ray collection. Seriously, Kojima -- how are you going to attract female gamers like this?" wasn't that what raiden was for? Besides screw the girl gamers (thats right screw em) we got hideo you can have jade
CrabBattle @ Jan 21st 2009 2:59AM
Black hawk down?
Completely disappointed, that movie reminds of pearl harbor. Brain-washing at its finest.
snake79 @ Jan 21st 2009 10:39AM
it's a movie. not a documentary.
hamildan @ Jan 21st 2009 12:01PM
I don't think you need to put that it was the original Planet of the Apes he likes.
We all took that as a given.
