PSP firmware 5.03 patches GripShift exploit

Yet another minor firmware update has been released for the PSP. Firmware 5.03 patches the GripShift exploit, which can potentially allow PSP-3000 systems to run homebrew. The update is currently available on Network Update on your PSP. You can also access it online at the PlayStation website.

Wow, that was fast. Sony must have been nervous about the Gripshift hack to be this quick on the patch. Problem is though that any pre 5.03 bright is going to be susceptible to this, so I hardly see the point. Most people that want a hacked PSP aren't going to bother with a 3000 anyhow.

I think the point is that, while the PS3 is getting new features in those firmware updates (check out PS3 Fanboy), the PSP is still waiting for a version of flash that 1. supports Flash video (of any flavour) and 2. supports versions of Flash that have been released within the last five years.

In fact, except for firmware 5.00, there have hardly been any features added to the PSP in the last year - especially for those unlucky enough to be without a PS3.

I hadn't even heard of this exploit. Good for them, I guess. It's only a slightly less exciting update than having access to Internet Search right from the home menu.

I wonder what would happen if Sony spend that much of efforts on developing games to PSP instead, or at least, translating the Eastern ones... too bad Sony is so damn dumb to realize were the "PSP problem" relies.

It might seem like a "stupid" update to some - especially to those people who already pirate (steal!) software, but I applaud any move by Sony that helps fight against these self-righteous individuals.

What are you talking about? Do you have any idea how ignorant you are? Or what homebrew even is? You haven't truly used your PSP until you've used it with CFW and a ton of apps installed. "Self righteous"? How does that even make sense? I'd advise you to read up on things you so willingly and idiotically condemn before you make a fool of yourself in the future. Just some friendly advice.

Hmmm didn't know they forced you to update when you try to login to the PSN on your PSP ...... looks like I'm not going to be logging in for a while then =P because I'm not updating just because they got a bur in their nickers. I'll update when

A) A game is a jerk and forces me to
B) they actually release something worth updating for

and yeah a decent flash player would be nice cause the outdated flashplayer they included a few revisions back was really cool until you realized how outdated and useless it tends to be. Wake me up when it can play stuff on youtube =P

Sony has to at least try to make an effort. If they just let this type of stuff go, game publishers would get the impression that sony wasn't backing them up, and they would be hesitant to produce games.

Sony is out to make money. They do so by selling sdk's AND by selling hw units. I am sure that they like that hw sales rise with the creation of the cfw, but the game publishers lose.

Moral of the story, sony is playing both teams. So get over it. And fixing a security hole like this far less demanding than implementing new features.

while this looks to be a minor update, lets keep in mind that it at least shows that Sony realizes that the product is flawed, and is willing to work towards fixing the issues the product has

i used to use homebrew back in the days when there were next to no good games for the psp, it was mostly the novelty of playing Super NES games on my psp. Once the novelty died out so to did the homebrew on my psp. Keep up the great work Sony and hope to see some more features in the next update.

Even if they could release a flash player that supports YouTube, it really wouldn't matter without a hardware revision. The PSP's browser memory just isn't enough. Surely you would have firgured it out from all the "Not Enough Memory" messages.

Though you can only pay gripshift right? psshh, they should stop worrying about piracy on the 3000 if its just one game.

I'm really hoping they will let us access our PSN friend list and allow text messaging like on the PS3. After all the PSP can already access the PSN store using your PSN account. So why not add some PSN communication features too.

Why not get Sony to force sellers to pull the psp out of the box and do a firmware update before they sell it to anyone.

I thought that the update did a great job on correcting a large portion of the scan-line deal (even though I still think it was never even 80% of what people made of it) and to improve overall frame rate on some games, so, if you are not into Homebrew, it's definitely an update worth getting.

I keep hearing about the "scanline fix" but surely if Sony had made any headway in somehow adjusting the software to improve a hardware failure, wouldn't they have made more of it?

The scanlines don't bother me really, but I'd like to see some sort of proof, as given Sony's penchant for lying through their teeth (alliwantforxmasispsp.com) until I see it, I don't buy it.

Good comment, Darlaten, unlike Ben, who doesn't read the PSP Terms and Conditions.

Even with a minor exploit like this, there could be emulators under development for it, henceforth opening a gateway for people who download pirated games for use with those emulators. People should just stop stealing software and learn to earn it the right way.
