Ten year hardware life makes sense in this economy
When Sony touted PS3 as a "ten year" machine, critics and gamers were quick to laugh it off as PR jargon. However, Sony has proven with the PS2 that they're capable of making a ten-year system. Ed Barton, analyst for Screen Digest, reminds gamers that God of War II released seven years into the console life and it "stands up pretty well to a lot of current generation games.""A hardware transition is a very expensive and traumatic experience for the entire industry and its consumers," he said. "I don't see why people wouldn't like the idea of any of the console manufacturers supporting a platform for ten years." We agree with Barton. Sony's plan for a ten year system truly makes sense, especially in the current economic environment. Current-generation systems still have a long way to go in terms of being affordable to the masses. Game development is already plenty expensive this console cycle -- if the industry rushes too soon into a new generation, how much more expensive will it be?
Console launches can cost "$3-5 billion," and with the economic climate right now, it's unlikely any company -- either Sony or Microsoft -- will want to jump into a new console cycle any time soon. For now, it looks like Sony's ten year plan with the PS3 is a pretty smart one. Kaz Hirai would agree.

I'd agree......although I would be tempted to say that the Next gen systems might still be shown @ E3 2011......and would launch the following year.....
hell as much money as Sony has put into Cell one would come to the conclusion that they would simply put 4 Cell processors on the PS4......can you imagine that power??? and if they get a good enough GPU the possibilities are ENDLESS.....not to mention using the Cell would cut on R&D and Production cost.....and Sony could pull a Nintendo by essentially putting 4 PS3 together to make a PS4....
Hey I can dream cant I??
Jerses @ Jan 20th 2009 10:57AM
I agree with you. But maybe microsoft will be the only one announcing a new console in the 2011. ( you know, to fix the heatsink problem).
The only problem is that if someone upgrade its console... the other 2 will go to because its console will look outdated... its a war that will never stop.
Also i think this gen we saw that its not about the power anymore (mine have 8bits, but mine 16bits!,etc) its about the exclusives or about how glitchy the game is so i wont buy it for that console.

Allan @ Jan 20th 2009 10:48AM
hehe why even get that drastic... The new Cells are already twice better than the one in the PS3!! sooo no need for 4... heck you can do 2 Cellv5 and some NVIDIA magic and RAM.. please for the love of god dont forget the RAM!!!.. and full 1080P with 60fps should be no prob... oh oh oh and of course an 8x at least bluray drive!!! with 400GB storage capability!!!
Ok i woke up now!
S4Rs @ Jan 20th 2009 11:17AM
Seriously. WTF are the 1080p games. This thing was supposed to output 2 1080p signals at the same time, and I dont think one game is in 1080p for gameplay yet. GT 5 will be I think.
kola @ Jan 20th 2009 12:28PM
Um, I own I think 6 games that run at 1080p. Dead Space, MGS4, Bioshock, Ninja Gaiden Sigma ... um if I was home I would call them off for you.
Levi @ Jan 20th 2009 6:42PM
wow kola, I was going to totally call you out on that, but the only game I have out of those 3 is Dead Space, and it is indeed 1080p... I thought pretty much the only games that were actually 1080 were PSN games.
SithAboveAll @ Jan 20th 2009 10:53AM
i personally dont want the same console for 10 years. give me a newer, better version after 5. the fast pace that tech advances, i want the ability to play better games.
Dan Rabot @ Jan 20th 2009 11:00AM
They won't have fully utilised the PS3 by five years. Look at the comment about God of War, 7 years into the PS2's cycle and still pushing the envelope.
Imagine how well developers will be using the PS3's power in 7 years time!!!
i think killzone 2 is going to be the first of a new generation, a PS3 generation.
Popfrogs @ Jan 20th 2009 3:36PM
Technically, since KZ2 has been in development so long, it's still a first generation game. MGS4 is also first gen. I guess you could say that whenever it releases, FFXIII will also be first gen.
This is an amazing generation so far. Things are getting way better in a short period of time and games like Uncharted, which were launch games from '06, still hold up well against newer games.
William @ Jan 20th 2009 11:07AM
They were capable of making a 10-year machine when there was no competition. Does that still stand true? When MS releases it's next 5-year machine that blows the PS3 away, will the PS3 survive another 5 years of that onslaught?
I seriously doubt it. Sony is kidding themselves if they think it'll happen like they want it to.
Just look at the damage MS did with only a 1-yr headstart. Sony is just now recovering from that. If MS hadn't had that head start, Sony would have had the market cornered from day 1, instead of playing catchup all this time.
DarthNemesis @ Jan 20th 2009 11:43AM
Actually,MS has not even made a dent in the market share of the video game community.Maybe you have a bad memory, but the PS2 has sold over 50 million in the US and other regions. The 360 which is the cheapest console still can not outsell the Wii.I doubt that the 360 will even reach the milestone that the PS2 has reached in the US,especially since the 360 still does not receive world wide support. That just shows you that the 360 has not taken off the way MS makes it seem. The PS3 has sold over 20 million in two years at a higher price and it took the 360 3 years at a cheaper price to reach that same feat.MS does not have enough possible consumers that Sony has who will buy the console when it get's cheaper, that's common sense.
vask @ Jan 20th 2009 1:18PM
from what Ive read the 360 isn't going nowhere anytime soon so don't expect another xbox system when year 5 hits.
the whole thing with the 10 year life cycle suites me just fine, hell they can take 15 if they like since it only brings more value out my system. I honestly hate having to go out and buy another console just to keep up with the times. especially with the whole economic crisis going on nowadays its just too much for the pockets.
Neo Senku @ Jan 20th 2009 11:09AM
I'm all for a 10 year console cycle. Its way easier on the wallet and also look at last gen, the best stuff came like year 6 or 7. Plus unless game play or the previous limitations can be improved or broken respectively with said new hardware and not just to make things look prettier, I really don't see the point in updating so soon. I mean graphics are nice but just because you can make it really graphically pretty doesn't mean it should or needs to in order to be a good game.
will @ Jan 20th 2009 11:10AM
i would like to see a list of the top 10 sentences made funnier by adding "in this economy" to the end.
halebound00 @ Jan 20th 2009 1:42PM
Boning your mom is a good idea.....in this economy. J/K someone had to do it.
Ghaleon @ Jan 20th 2009 11:45AM
I don't think launching a $500-600 videogame machine in any economy was a good idea.
saito ps3 @ Jan 20th 2009 11:51AM
you guys do realize just because the ps3 has a 10 year life cycle doesnt mean sony is going to release another one during it. look at ps2, if im wrong this year is the 10th year it would have been out. and ps3 was released during its 7th year.
vask @ Jan 20th 2009 1:27PM
i understand you on that but i personally doubt that something will come anytime soon on sonys part since development costs are already too high as it is. Sony is tanking big this gen. So i really doubt that they are focusing their money on the next system.
I see them focusing in reducing the cost of manufacturing their consoles and reducing its size(making a PS3 slim or something equivalent) before going all out and putting together a PS4.
then theres the next question of power, its been a trend for developers to make a system thats more powerful than its predecessor but this gen i think we need more innovation than power, this is where i feel nintendo took the right leap for success and i feel that sony and microsoft might be looking to follow that direction as well.
Afrocass @ Jan 20th 2009 2:04PM
Well the PS1 lasted a good 10 years.. i see no reason why the Ps3 won't.. from what i've read an seen the architecture of the console allows for continuous improvements in both graphics and gameplay..
acedoh @ Jan 20th 2009 4:50PM
Where do some of you get SONY is tanking on the PS3??? I don't see any indication of that being the case. I don't see SONY selling first party divisions or cutting games from their budget. The only thing SONY is losing on is the console itself. They are making more revenue off the PSN and the movie store which are sources of revenue they didn't have with the PS2.
The ten year life span is feasible. It will be interesting to see when they talk about the PS4...
dreamhunk @ Jan 20th 2009 5:05PM
It's too bad pc's do a much better job than a console at that.
