Attack of the Ads: Sony UK plans £2?m Killzone 2 ad spree
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has stacked a tidy lump sum of £2?m (approx. $2.8m US) to help promote Killzone 2 in the region, Edge reports. Planning to swarm the unsuspecting island with television and movie theater ads, Sony UK is adamant in pushing its upcoming first-person shooter.
The dedication of £2?m points to Sony's confidence in the Guerrilla Games developed title, which currently holds a high 95% Metacritic rating -- if numbers mean anything to you. Sony UK has also allotted an additional £2?m in order to promote other high profile PS3 exclusives, including industry darling, but commercially snubbed, LittleBigPlanet.
SCEE marketing director Alan Duncan told Edge that recent reviews of Killzone 2 prove the title has "lived up" to expectations and "brings a new energy" to the competitive first-person genre. Sony UK hopes strong ads for Killzone 2 can drive sales in the region, which will receive an exclusive bundle for the game's release. That's fantastic, but how about someone drive to the PSN server room and flip the switch to give us that demo already.

Now Will SCEA do that????
Doubtful.......
when they could EASILY do a 5-10 Second Superbowl Commercial to get attention.......
HeavyToka @ Jan 30th 2009 2:01PM
I hope SCEA does the same or more
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jan 30th 2009 2:51PM
Superbowl Idea:
"Okay well there's the end of the third quarter. Here's a commercial break."
*Cue epic music*
The end is near. Killzone 2. Exclusive to PlayS---
*Cue Meow Mix song*
*Cute cats dancing and running around in circles for 30 seconds*
"ALLLRIGHT! Here's the final quarter!"
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 30th 2009 2:57PM
lol.........Meow Mix Commercial tho?? lol
DeathroW @ Jan 30th 2009 3:16PM
If SCEE are doing something like this, you can almost bet SCEA will double it.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 30th 2009 3:31PM
@Death: would love to believe that but SCEA Dropped the ball with LBP and R2.......those were advertised more in Japan & UK than they were here
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Jan 30th 2009 8:25PM
All they have to do is run this ad during the Superbowl

Finally a release date has been announced for Japan for this game :)
April 23rd !! Well 2 months late, but not bad since Yakuza 3 is coming next month.
I'm not interested in Demons Soul, btw. But if any ones interested, its said that the game is like Kings Field.
drdre74 @ Jan 30th 2009 2:06PM
good to see Sony steppin up for a game that is worth it. They should have down this with a few other games and maybe they would have had a better year.
Lars @ Jan 30th 2009 4:46PM
I honestly think it won't make much difference at this point. If it sells over 300k in it's first week I will be shocked. PS3 exclusives, while great games, just don't sell.
Geoff @ Jan 30th 2009 2:16PM
Aggie_CEO is unfortunately right. SCEA probably won't have much advertising. A superbowl commercial would help them out SO MUCH. Not only because it is on the superbowl, but because there are also shows about the "Best super bowl commercials" the news replays favorite superbowl commercials, and they are all over google and youtube immediately after the superbowl.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 30th 2009 2:53PM
yea that would be SO much exposure.......100 Million+ American Homes....yet the fools wont do it.........
hell I'd be willing to put money up that we see an Xbox commercial
Copland @ Jan 30th 2009 2:20PM
Fully agree with Aggle_CEO and Geoff.

Andrew Ryan @ Feb 2nd 2009 8:41AM
Was a good match. Cardinals nearly had it
debaser @ Jan 30th 2009 2:37PM
During the winter x-games they had this commercial just about every break.
just sayin...
don't know if the super bowl advertising costs would be worth while roi

All i see is negative comments in here..okay,sony can earn easy attention with a superbowl ad,but be a little happy for this, they are actually advertising, that has rarely,VERY RARELY been done in sony's history of the gaming division, they have alot of ads for tvs, electronics etc etc. but their exclusives have barely ever been advertised, goodness people..have some positivity..americans these days....
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 30th 2009 2:55PM
It Happens in the UK more than it does the US........which is partially why the PS3 has been leading month after month there........point blank SCEE knows what it is doing........SCEA doesnt........
Mungo sized slasher @ Jan 30th 2009 3:02PM
In Canada the ads are amazing, i don't understand but i'm pretty ure the PS3 outsells, is over promoted more than the 360. Also software sales of PS3 normally slash a higher spot @ places like amazon, best buy & future shop. Also I don't leave a movie screening with a PS3 Software/hardware advertisement. I find this VERY odd. Also PSP commercials on tv quite often. Why are they promoting so much here??
Geoff @ Jan 30th 2009 2:41PM
@ debaser : The winter x-games are not as popular as the superbowl and a trailer for just 1 game might be better than a bunch of little snippets of different games.
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 30th 2009 2:56PM
Fact....
Daniel @ Jan 30th 2009 3:01PM
I'm just surprised that Joystiq used "Sony" and "attack" in the same article without any giant enemy crab references. Bravo!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
actually when the PS1 was out you couldn't go 10 minutes during anytime of day without seeing Crash out in front of nintendo's offices with a megaphone mocking them...
that being said. Sony has really lost touch on their ads... other than the economy that is the only thing holding sony back.... drop the artsy fartsy reflection ads... and that stupid "movie machine" ad re-tool and show people what the PS3 and PSP are and why they need them.

The audience for a game of this calibur could be astronomical if the mainstream gets a good whiff... We of course know about this game because we are on the internets. Although the millions who don't go on sites like this need to be exposed to this game. A superbowl ad would be the icing on the cake. It would be the target audience for this type of game. Let's see how much business sense SCEA has when it comes to their biggest game for the PS3...
Strategy_Panda (Pot & Spoon 4 Life) @ Jan 30th 2009 4:52PM
Its about time they started advertising this game
nakedatthecomp @ Jan 30th 2009 11:17PM
how much did M$ spend to advertise GOW/GOW2? those ads literally got annoying after awhile they were so recurrent - hopefully Sony can get word about KZ2 out almost as much :)
Dr.inga @ Feb 1st 2009 12:27PM
This is not an Edge story. This is an MCV story.
Shane @ Jan 31st 2009 9:20PM
An advertising campaign for Generic Shooter II? There are people out there not aware of this game? I was of the impression that the existence of KZII had been ingrained into the psyche of every mortal being on earth.
I wonder how this 2m compares to the costs of its lengthy development time and above all, if they will do more than just break even with this title.
CABALLOTE @ Feb 2nd 2009 4:18AM
Did anyone see the SuperBowl ad for this game? Yeah, I didn't either.
Dan Rabot @ Feb 2nd 2009 6:31AM
This is exactly what they need to do, and make sure it says "....only on playstation" on the end. - That really bugs me how all multiplat games say "....available on Xbox, only £129" on the end. How bloody dare they!
Sould say "..only on Playstation, you get what you pay for" at the end - then perhaps show a RROD with "LOL" - that would be appeasing.
